Corporate execs typically don't understand either the tech or the official processes or the unofficial processes that drive their company.

In this case, I am prepared to bet that they hadn't got a clue about the tech that Glenn Mcdonald maintained (because he wrote it) nor the unofficial processes that he executed (analyzing and defining new genres) - and both of these are core to some of Spotify's important but not critical services.

So laying Glenn off was a major mistake and other corporations have gone bust as a consequence of similar mistakes (though I am not sure that Glenn's tech and non-tech services are quite so important as to bust the company).
