Congrats to all the successful GSoC applicants!! Looking forward to working together!

To everyone who wasn’t selected, the level for GSoC gets higher every year, it’s crazy. Your application might have been perfect, but someone elses was perfecter :D I really hope you stick around and work with us anyway, or at least come back for next year’s GSoC!
MeB can only take so many applicants, the core team is small, and a mentor might only have bandwidth to support 1 out of a lot of excellent proposals
Mōrena rimskii! I’ve had a busy day, and it’s still early for the community manager (reosarevok), I’m sure he will get back to you today :) If not, I will get back to you tomorrow! (it is late here)

Hi rimskii[m]! I forwarded the info to your direct mentors who are the ones who'd probably be the best choice for putting that document together:)

Hello! I applied for GSoC this year but unfortunately was not one of the selected ones. I was pretty dejected by the decision as I did put my heart and soul for this. I have heard organisations such as VLC do make arrangements for some the people who were left out by providing the same set of rules as a GSoC project but the stipend comes from VLC itself.
Is there any way Metabrainz would be open to it? I am really interested in dedicating my summer towards implementing the project I researched for weeks which would benefit the BB also
Would love some inputs from the team and also monkey since I did apply to a BB project :)

Great effort aabbi15! It is hard when the competition is so tough - there was only space for one BB project :0
aabbi15
One space for BB project as per google or is it not feasible for the team at BB to run more than a project in the first place?
monkey
aabbi15: I'm the only mentor for BB, and doing more than one project can be taxing. I've done it in the past but can't this year

monkey: Got it! I will keep contributing to BB in whatever capacity I can and hopefully get to work with the team someday :)

aabbi15 that's really nice to hear! I liked working with you as well!
For what it's worth, your proposal was good and it made the shortlist of pre-selection. You're not the only one in that case, and it's always sad to have to reduce that selection for how many slots we have
mayhem
there were so many good proposals, we had to reject a lot of good proposals since we have limited slots.
monkey
Rejecting bad proposals is really easy. Having to reject multiple good proposals that I would love to mentor is really hard
<reosarevok> "Hi rimskii[m]! I forwarded the..." <- oh, okay ! Thank you very much ! im sorry for troubling you that late
reosarevok
No worries! mayhem will take care of it, he said :)
mayhem is about to get started on that

there had been some talking about the new oauth setup for MB. What's the state here? Does it make sense to already look into adapting Picard for this?
mayhem
lucifer: ^^
rimskii[m]: to which uni am i sending the letter? can you send me the offical address (mailing)?
zerodogg has quit
lucifer
outsidecontext: it is in testing. as of now, the intent is to remove out of band redirect mode for OAuth. if picard could be adapted to use auhtorization code flow with pkce, it would be great.
lucifer: should be possible. if this is already ready in test mode we could start with the implementation and thus also help with testing. if URLs will still change we can adjust as needed
lucifer: as I understood the plan is now to keep the old provider around for some time, right? instead of trying some redirect as was suggested in last year's summit
lucifer
outsidecontext: yes, the old provider stays.
until clients have migrated.
outsidecontext
that's great, so existing installs can continue working. it should stay for a while, we will have installs with current versions around for quite some time
derat: are you only doing this for artists right now, btw? I'd love having it for all entities :)
(I just was adding aliases to works earlier today)
Certainly a good start in any case
derat
reosarevok: i'm unlikely to try to add the same thing for other entity types anytime soon. there are still a bunch of places where localized aliases aren't shown for artists due to all the different ways artists can be loaded :-/
reosarevok
Yeah, I think we should find a more consistent way to load this first :)
derat
i think that bitmap was playing around with a more-generalized SQL-based approach
outsidecontext
lucifer: does this need new app registration? ultimately this will be moved somewhere below metabrainz.org, right?
lucifer: great, that's perfect. multiple redirect URLs +1 :) I'll look into this the coming days
lucifer
awesome

GSoC contributors: Last year I did a LinkedIn post to boost the successful applicants. I would like to do it again - if you would like to have your LinkedIn account tagged please add a *comment* with your account link to this doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bZepDVQOuvG...
P.S. already looking forward to my favourite season of meeting notes! The ‘reasons why I couldn’t work on gsoc this week’ season :P

Was waiting for a more appropriate international time to post the GSoC selections… done, and now it’s bed time. Have a great day all

twodoorcoupe: congratulations for GSoC
twodoorcoupe
Thank you! I appreciate the opportunity

@twodoorcoupe we need to see how we stay in touch then. but zas and I are both around here on IRC, zas is usually better reachable, though. but we can arrange for times.
I already organized that I will be available on MB weekly monday meetings from now on (which I usually did not take part in the past due to time conflict)
twodoorcoupe
outsidecontext: gotcha, I should be available most of the time since I think we are on the same timezone
outsidecontext
yes, indeed we are. I'm in germany and zas in france.
