jasje

lucifer
hi all!
jasje
monkey: Thanks!!
Pratha-Fish CatQuest: I am a corporate shill sent by google to keep an eye at MetaBrainz 👁️
Pratha-Fish *on
CatQuest
nah
mayhem
Pratha-Fish: not needed. we have direct line to Google. :)
lucifer
last few weeks, i worked mostly on Year in Music stuff. other than worked on adding cover art to playlists and helped alastairp with the manual mapping stuff.
mayhem
if they want to know what we're doing they know to just ask
lucifer
also, met with riksucks, ansh and akshaaatt! :)
that's it for me. atj: next?
v6lur joined the channel
atj
hello
Pratha-Fish
mayhem: of course I know you have a direct line at Google... I work there. I was sent to report on daily activities and espionage (secret stuff they cant directly ask about)
CatQuest
this joke bores me :|
atj
Happy new year everyone. First day back after an extended Christmas break so nothing to report.
zas?
zas
Hey
Pratha-Fish
CatQuest: Try to spot me in your coffee tomorrow 👁️
Freso
(Only Shubh, riksucks, and Freso left on my list. Last call for anyone else who wish to give review!)
zas
I did usual supervision, user support, upgrades, etc..
We (with phw) released first version of Picard 2.9 (alpha)
The date the release was issued. / The country the release was issued in.
CatQuest
oooh! well good thing with the doc sprint then!
reosarevok
I thought that'd be all the documentation needed for physical, since those two things directly apply to those :)
yvanzo
reosarevok: yes and it links to an historic release event page.
CatQuest
so basically 1 is Update the documentation
yvanzo
Thanks, so we can move to the next step after that.
reosarevok
Yeah, seems so
yvanzo
(If the split looks reasonable to everyone.)
reosarevok
Let's update the links later this week, and if you feel the wording is confusing we can talk about that too
yvanzo
reosarevok: It's not just what is a release event, it is why we have it.
reosarevok
Oh. Well, we don't document why we have artists or barcodes either 🤷♂️
yvanzo
We should.
CatQuest
eh.
yvanzo
Fin for me.
Pratha-Fish
CatQuest: does this count as documentation? https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Communication/IRC ? I'd love to add a step by step quick start for IRC since a lot of folks I know seem to be having trouble wrapping their head around it
Freso
Unless others have more to add to the topic, that’s that for this week.
CatQuest
oh! yea. a documentation for irc would be +++
Freso
Which it doesn’t look like there are.
yvanzo
Pratha-Fish: Sure.
Freso
So thank you all for your time! Welcome back, and stay safe out there!
</BANG>
CatQuest
I remember back i the day i was confused by irc too. it has a small steep learning curve, but once you figure it out it's awesome
reosarevok
yvanzo: so the idea is to improve docs, then define digital next meeting? Works for me
Pratha-Fish
Freso: 🎉
CatQuest
🎉🎊
yvanzo
reosarevok: Why we have artists or barcodes is pretty obvious. But release events are not always printed on the release.
CatQuest
barcodes and artists aren't always printed either :D
reosarevok
I mean, I'm not sure why we have them - because people want them? :D I'm not sure why we have packaging either, but that seems to be the same reason
CatQuest
many releases don't even *have* barcode
reosarevok
I mean, I guess to some degree both help disambiguate releases
CatQuest
that's my take away actualy
Pratha-Fish
CatQuest: Exactly! I was super confused when I first started out wih IRC. A lot of folks have been DMing me on Linkedin for the same too. I'll get back to you with an update draft soon
CatQuest
it made more sense before coverart uploads too
reosarevok
But I don't think that's the reason we have them, people like to have that info even when there's only one release and no likelihood of re-release
CatQuest
Pratha-Fish: cool!
on wiki
I mean. we have that data becasue.. it's data
and for especially physical and historical release. it was very important data
reosarevok
CatQuest: sure, but that's the argument people give for the 200 country lists :D
"it's data, so we want to add it" :p
CatQuest
because there where real differences between jp, vs US vs uk releases and such
reosarevok
So maybe we can figure out a better reason :D
CatQuest
ja. i was getting to that
monkey
jivte: What do you need help with?
CatQuest
in physical you have *a release* I have a norwegian release of "secret garden" it is differnt than the international ones
and so on
zas
to me the main difference between digital & physical releases is that physical ones hardly change after release, but digital releases can be edited, and sometimes that's very hard to know when & what changed.
CatQuest
with online it's.. complicated and less distinct at the same time
yvanzo
Release country was a distinctive feature for physical release, it is lesser the case for digital release.
reosarevok
Yeah
CatQuest
exactly
jivte
monkey: thanks for asking i figured it out myself
CatQuest
it's literally unimportant for online
reosarevok
I guess what yvanzo is looking at is "if we decide why do we even bother to store countries and dates, it's easier to figure out if that even makes sense for digital"?
monkey
👍
jivte
monkey: actually was converting date to timestamp for submitting timestamp in payload
reosarevok
Which makes sense to me. It's not quite unimportant for digital - because sometimes there are differences between digital releases in different countries, even though that sounds stupid
But it's certainly less important IMO
yvanzo
It makes sense for physical release, but digital releases are another thing.
CatQuest
I have a live recording of Motörhead ok? they are playing a concert and lemmy talks about th song they wher going ot play next. and he says "but you cna only gt it in german, you couldn't even steal it" and i was like "yea lemmy luv, this is so obv pre-internet
so in conclution it *dosnt* really make sense to have countries of online/digital releases
