navap: dunno, but he got his itinerary changed to today (I've seen a pic of the boarding pass)
He just put Fri on the wiki... no idea why
adhawkins
Anyone know how much free space you need to import a data dump?
It appears to unzip all the data first...
navap
"a lot" :)
adhawkins
More than 15 Gig or so?
The new VM has a 20Gig root, and an 80 Gig partition for postgres
The dump files are in tmp, which is in the 20 Gig partition
navap
i think 20 is safe, i uavent measured a gull import in a while
15 might not be
adhawkins
Does it extract all the files before it starts, or do one at a time?
navap
my plane just pulled up
adhawkins
Is it a pretty one? :)
navap
its white and has some writing on it
I d0nt know what order it unzips in
alastairp
adhawkins: my database is 30gb. I just checked today
I think you need ~the same to uncompress it into temp
maybe a bit less
adhawkins
Bugger.
It's doing the edit dump first.
And that's the big one.
Looks like it's extracting all the files first.
navap
So where should i go after landing?
The university or the apartment
adhawkins
Should I see a file or directory called musicbrainz_db under /var/lib/postegresql?
When it's created the database...
reosarevok
navap: the apartment
If you come at 10 or so
(we should move like at 3)
navap
Im schedulex tonarrive at 11
Does the airport have wifi?
Free wifi?
reosarevok
For 15 minutes
But, if you arrive at 11 go to the apartment
If you arrive after 12, maybe call Rob to make sure
adhawkins
Is ocharles travelling at the moment?
navap
What corner is the flat on?
reosarevok
adhawkins: he's sitting in front of me
adhawkins
Ah, ok :)
reosarevok
navap: I haven't been there yet
navap
the map links on the wiki dont look right tome. They show a different spot than when i looked at them on my pc
reosarevok
navap: dunno, it's the address Rob gave me
navap
Whats the address?
reosarevok
Bac de Roda 118, 12º 3ª
navap
What do the numbers mean?
reosarevok
adhawkins: he's just gone to Subway, so he is no longer in front of me
number on the street, floor, door
adhawkins
Ok. Might need to pick his brains about this VM stuff at some point.
reosarevok
(for navap)
adhawkins
I'm sure it can wait.
alastairp
navap:
oh, you got the info about the numbers
I'm at the university all day, anyway
you need an access card to get in though, so maybe it's easiest to go to the apartment
reosarevok
We still need Rob so we can get into the apartment to begin with, but since he has to sleep somewhere I guess he'll make sure we get in :p
Rob just got to BCN
:)
navap
Great
I think im boarding soon
I thought wrong
reosarevok
hah
navap
They've had elderly and mobility challenged people lined up and ready to go for almost 30 min
They're all just standing there, meanwhile us able bodied young folk are sitting comfortably
arghh i keep getting disconnected evey 10-15 seconds
The flight is supposed to leave in 23 min and no one's boarded yet
reosarevok
Sounds like a Ryanair flight :p
navap
30 min of screen time withwifi on and all i've lost is 5% battery life on the nexus 7. If only cell phones were that good
reosarevok
Ok, going to meet Rob now
Good luck with that boarding navap :)
kepstin-laptop joined the channel
kepstin-laptop is now in JFK, and has ½ hour before his final flight to BCN.
navap
Thanks. Give him an "eh?" from me
kepstin-laptop: how's the weather?
kepstin-laptop
dull and cool.
low clouds near the airport
kepstin-laptop finds it amusing that his first flight was from EST to CST, and now he's EST again
oh well, the price of going for the cheapest flight :)
navap
Where did you connect?
kepstin-laptop
chicago o'hare
alastairp
when does Brewster arrive?
kepstin-laptop notes that this is mostly because ottawa intl airport is somewhat low traffic, and tends not to have convenient cheap direct flights to places :/
navap
Does it do non-us i18n flights?
alastairp
internationalisation flights
kepstin-laptop
yes, but they're somewhat limited.
alastairp
do porter fly out of ottawa?
kepstin-laptop
alastairp: I *think* so, but they primarily do ottawa-toronto, I think?
alastairp
yeah, maybe
kepstin-laptop checks
kepstin-laptop
I paid for a day of this boingo airport internet, might as well use it while I can.
alastairp
heh, yeah
navap
Toronto has free internet access including ssh :)
kepstin-laptop
fancy.
alastairp
so does montreal, I think
kepstin-laptop didn't spend long enough in ottawa to check
kepstin-laptop
literally just went through US customs and right onto the plane :)
navap
I did us customs in yesterday's attempt. Took almost 90 min from start to finish
kepstin-laptop
I got through in about 30-40 minutes, I think
navap
Today was regular security and it had absolutely no line
we're boardinga!
kepstin-laptop
they had enough traffic that they had to open a second carry-on xray line :)
have fun :)
man, my ears are just recovering, and i'll be getting on another plane shortly...
anyways, this is the long overnight one.. see everybody on the other side :)

Database and import data takes 35 Gig during the import (that's not including the download files themselves)
Once the import is complete it uses 18 Gig
So looks like you need 17 Gig just for the temporary extraction of the files.
navap
I.m in my seat, thatwassurprisingly fast
adhawkins: We should document those numbers, somewhere
adhawkins
Well, they're in the chat logs now :)
uk
Summit WiFi available, yeah!
nikki_ joined the channel
alastairp
uk: where are you?
nikki_
alastairp: at the flat in barcelona with me and freso and rob
adhawkins
Ah, it's not finished importing yet. Still creating the indexes
