ocharles, ruaok: I'd appreciate a review on https://bitbucket.org/metabrainz/musicbrainz-serv… from both of you, to be sure I didn't neglect something in documenting setting up replication/master servers

Brand new around here. If someone wouldn't mind answering a quick question: I'm looking to incorporate some musicbrainz data into my Android music player app. I've got ~60k active users, will I need an API key, or to provide MusicBrainz any info? Are MusicBrainz able to identify if a large number of requests are coming from my app, and do I need to worry about it?

you have come to the right place

yohammed: one of the requirements for using the MusicBrainz API is that your application has an HTTP User-Agent that identifies your application uniquely
2014-02-10 04130, 2014
kepstin-laptop
we have on occasion had to throttle applications that put too much load on the servers
2014-02-10 04157, 2014
yohammed
Thanks for the response, I thought that was the case.
2014-02-10 04107, 2014
kepstin-laptop
Our standard rate limiting is 1 request per second per ip address
2014-02-10 04126, 2014
kepstin-laptop
... I have to go :/ someone else might be around later...
2014-02-10 04146, 2014
kepstin-laptop
a lot depends on the types of requests your app will make
2014-02-10 04106, 2014
yohammed
Just out of curiousity (and I will be providing a user-agent, I'm looking into the MusicBrainz Android github project to see how it's done), how does MusicBrainz know when my particular app is making requests if I don't provide an user-agent?
2014-02-10 04116, 2014
kepstin-laptop
e.g. constantly polling artists for new releases on multiple ips puts a lot of server load on
2014-02-10 04140, 2014
kepstin-laptop
yohammed: with no unique user agent, you get dumped into the pool of people with no unique user agent, which gets really low priority ;)
2014-02-10 04147, 2014
yohammed
OK, no problem.
2014-02-10 04103, 2014
yohammed
And I won't be polling. It's a simple request for artist info, when a user navigates to the section of the app.
