Freso: right. As long as it's just a few I wouldn't worry too much. We probably want to keep the extractor stable now, errors included

Until we work out how to do versioning

The most optimistic response I can give is "hopefully we'll refresh the database with new/fixed features some time in the next 6 months"

hey guys, is there a way to get the artist genre from the API?

i've tried grabbing the tags, but its not always the genre :/

zag: we don't have genres, other than as tags, so all you can do is whitelist tags you're happy to consider as genres

(or find something else which does have genres, that's always a possibility too XD)

That was discussed on the last MBz summit. I don't think we have any updates since that

got yeh, for example U2 comes back with "1980" as the first tag

I'll just whitelist some, and pick the most tagged. thats fine if a little convoluted

making a primary Genre tag might be a nice idea, or at the very least seperating genre tags from other tags

zag for genres probably better of looking at tags at releasegroup or release level rather than artist level.

Or cross-reference with AllMusic, Discogs, Wikipedia/Wikidata, RYM, and/or many of the other sites we link to.

I know XBMC used to query MB for basic data and if an artist/release had an AllMusic link, they would then use that to query AllMusic for genre and mood data.
