does anyone know where the traffic shaping command line utlity tcng has gone to in ubunty 14.04?

there used to be a tcng pacakge, but no longer.

ah, its been dropped. joy.

in favour of another tool, one would hope?

what is the modern way to assign multiple ips addresses to one nic?

I see references to iproute2 being the way the cool kids do it.

'ip addr add 192.168.0.1/24 dev eth0'

repeat as needed

can that be done in /etc/network/interfaces

the /etc/network/interfaces file on debian has a specific syntax for this

it was designed pre-iproute2, so it's a bit wonky.

that statement doesn't work. when the new gateway router comes back up, the iptables rules don't get loaded.

any idea how to debug this?

where is that in the file?

normally you' want to put it on the primary eth0 interface, and it'll only get run once at boot, pretty much

em1 = eth0

what should I use instead? tcng is a discontinued package.

what's your goal for that, and what's the line speeds you're working with?

wondershaper was designed for upload on 1-5mbit "broadband", anything else and it falls apart.

this is for MB -- we want to ensure that we stay below our bandwidth allocation.

currently 20mb.

I suspect that its the wondershaper stuff. let me take it out and try again

best option now is probably to use something based on the current bufferbloat/openwrt stuff, which uses hfsc for limiting and then fq_codel to make things work nicely.

assuming the kernel on the box is new enough to have fq_codel

if all you want is to limit outgoing speed to 20mbit in a fair way that doesn't cause large queues/delays, https://gist.github.com/kepstin/901b5a7e523e496... should work for you.

run "watch tc -s -d class show dev <interface>" in a terminal to see what it's doing :)

(if at some point you want particular traffic to be classified to get a higher share, rather than be completely fair, that can be added without too much effort)

right now it's just dumping all traffic into a single bin that gets the entire link.

exactly, that's why i'm replacing the trackpad.

the T440p did not come with trackpoint buttons, instead it used software buttons on the trackpad

the newer models add the physical buttons back
