alastairp: the Vitamin String Quartet is showing up because of those aliases, they match keywords and automatically generated phrases...they are showing up so high in the list because of how many artist_credit.ref_counts they are linked to...personally, I have a problem with those aliases...it seems to me like those should be tags...
...that being said, I understand why they are aliases. I wonder if giving the "Vitamin String Quartet" a negative boost since it really doesn't refer to an artist, but rather a label/series.
I've given some of the other special purpose artists (various artists, unknown, language instruction) significant negative boosts
actually (as I think out loud) if we wanted to I could give a negative boost to artists with the "special purpose artist" tag to cover all of these (this would be more efficient and less code/easier to read)

does anyone know enough of our transclusion process to know if excluding https://musicbrainz.org/doc/api.php would be possible? someone has sent me an email asking for that page to be excluded because it makes the pywikibot code believe that https://musicbrainz.org/doc/ is a mediawiki installation
how that code ends up accessing that page in the first place, I don't know :P

ruaok wonders what alastairp thinks of the four final NZ flags.
alastairp
I think the silver fern is tied too much into the identity of our rugby team
and the red ad blue reminds me of a cereal box from the 90s
it kind of feels like we're not trying. "oh, the union flag in the corner doesn't represent who we are, so let's just take the same flag and replace it with a fern!"
yea, that first link would be dangerous to employ when people are adding releases. end up putting *a lot* of ones in the wrong place
also. heh. sometimes I do searches like to *get* lots fo those "useless" results so that I can find shit to fix :)
on the flip side im finding dodgy things to fix with you solr search so. good jo!
oh also someone mentioned something the other day.. i twas that when doing a search I'd be cool if it would show you what it matched on, so like, if it was an alias it'd say (alias:Blup Face) or whatever.. it was in here ir #musicbrainz a few days ago i gotta go eat right now but if oy usearch on the chatlogs for "jimi hendrix" thism onth
look for it whne i return

ruaok: do you have any thoughts about "Vitamin String Quartet" or "Various Artists" or any other "special purpose artist"?
I thought I would check OCLC to see how they treat them and the have them as an artist/group with one alias: "VSQ"
them = vitamins string quartet (of course)
-s
ruaok
how is VSQ different from a normal band?
weeksio_
"a rotating collective of top classical musicians"
ruaok
that shouldn't change how we search for them, no?
I can see VA being different.
weeksio_
the problem with the searchresults is they have done a tribute album for a ton of different bands/artists
ruaok
CatQuest had some comments about that yesterday
weeksio_
they have an alias for each tribute album
chirlu`
The aliases should probably be marked as search hints.
weeksio_
(I saw them)
chirlu`
Would that change how your code handles them?
weeksio_
right now results include alias hits, so vsq is showing up in a lot of search results for the bands they have released tribute albums for
since they have so many albums, they have high ref counts and they are being bumped way up in popularity
should album titles be aliases?
chirlu`: solr can do things like search suggestions, autocomplete, result highlighting...
...but those are probably good for a phase 2 of this project
2, 3, ... , N
:P
chirlu`
Good question if they should be search hints. Perhaps not.
Hm, the aliases werent added manually. Probably results from merges.
I question whether vsq should even have the special purpose artist tag
chirlu`
Well, its a tag, anyone can add it.
weeksio_
ah...
yea
it seemed like it was being used as a "controlled heading" (library term) of sorts
chirlu`
Still cant find out how the aliases got there in the first place. :-/
weeksio_
so that phrase appears as a tag and as a disambiguation...maybe the db schema could have a boolean property for artists that aren't really artists?
it seems the [] brackets mean something, no?
chirlu`
Yes, real SPA mostly have [] names.
weeksio_
...so 3 different indicators for SPA? Are the brackets the most definitive?
chirlu`
There is also a list on the wiki. :-)
weeksio_ looks
And no, its Various Artists, not [Various Artists].
weeksio_
you beat me to it :P
It would be great to treat all SPAs the same in an artist search to get around the popularity metric boosting them unnaturally, but since the tag can be added by anyone (and has been for VSQ) the tag is not the solution for catching it
