hmm. the new one looks better to me :/ maybe you could try adjusting the new one so that it looks better on your screen and tell us what colour you end up with?
nikki isn't sure how your screen works and only knows that you have weirdly huge screenshots XD
bitmap
heh
maybe I'm just too used to the old one...I'll stifle my complaint for now
reosarevok
Wait, where is the other colour?
(beta and prod look the same to me, if it's inline search)
livewire94: GitHub is officially our "canon" repository, but if you're going to develop against it, you might as well use Bitbucket, since we use Bitbucket pull requests and not GitHub ones. (For musicbrainz-server anyway.)
livewire94: Also, for some of the larger, possibly GSoC-worthy projects, the resumes from recent MusicBrainz Summits might give an idea about what we currently are trying to make happen.
(I'll try and dig them up - hold tight.)
CallerNo6
Oh, good call, I should add that link to the GSoC ideas wiki page.
One thing I've considered possibly doing/suggesting as a GSoC is implementing the Web Service in Python to 1) decouple the Web Service from the Web Site, and 2) move code away from Perl and to Python. :p
CallerNo6
+1
Freso
(There hasn't been an official decision that Python is the language we want to switch to, but it's the one that has my vote - and the doers' votes usually count high around here, so chances are it'd get accepted.)
warp
Freso: you calling yourself a doer? :P
Freso
(But I also have no idea whether I'll actually have time to do a GSoC project this coming summer.)
warp: ^
warp
oh, if you're gsoccing you'd be a doer, certainly.
CallerNo6
If Freso does it, I'll document it.
Freso
warp: I guess if someone wanted to re-implement the WS in C++ and actually went and did it, it might also get accepted.
(There are a few languages I doubt would get accepted though, even if someone did it. :))
warp
that sounds a lot more maintenaince intensive though
Freso
Sure. And I'd definitely prefer Python over C++ too, but hey, who am I to judge?
warp
I say javascript! :)
Freso
livewire94: What's your personal interest in MusicBrainz?
CallerNo6
warp shouldn't joke about that. those node.js people are everywhere.
warp
CallerNo6: I wonder if I'm one of them.
Freso
livewire94: Also, what are you studying? (I'd guess Computer Science, but hey, I'm doing Sports Science, and I'm still considering GSoC'ing - there are weirdos everywhere. :p)
CallerNo6 was setting himself up for the punchline, "oh no! they've converted you too!"
warp
CallerNo6 :)
livewire94
I am studying Computer Science from IIIT Hyderabad
I actually like the idea behind MusicBrainz and yes I would to get a Gsoc project on MusicBrainz ! :)
*like to
UmkaDK joined the channel
So should I begin working on the projects mentioned by Freso as potential Gsoc projects this summer ??
Freso
livewire94: Which project(s) exactly do you have in mind? Apart from the Web Service one, I don't think I've talked about anything in particular.
livewire94: What kind of Computer Science assignments do you like the most?
(Ie., what kind of problems do you prefer to work with?)
livewire94
I like algorithmic problems( I like participating in programming contests)
Freso
livewire94: Would you be able to join the channel here on Monday between 20:00 and 21:00 UTC?
livewire94
Ya sure ! :)
Freso
(I don't know what timezone it is where you live.)
livewire94: Alright.
livewire94: We have the weekly development meeting there. We could put you as a topic for next meeting and perhaps discuss a ticket or two to get you started on getting familiar with the musicbrainz-server code.
livewire94: If you have some music lying around, you might also want to try and edit some with MusicBrainz to get an idea for how the website/interface works.
Once you have some familiarity with how the editing process works and how the code is structured, you might also even have an idea about what you want to work with with regards to MusicBrainz.
Perhaps even something none of us regulars had thought about. :)
livewire94
Would you be interested to see the projects I have done in college so far ? :)
Freso
(Also, if you hang around in IRC enough, you'll get to hear plenty of complaints about all sorts of parts of MusicBrainz.)
just go to your terminal run the code type the name of the song and the song gets downloaded into the pwd
if it is present in emp3worlds database :p
Freso
Yep. I read that. ;)
It could be interesting to try and gamify the voting process perhaps. (I see you've done some game programming competing.)
But yeah. If you spend the next days adding some of your music collection to the database and lurk here and in #musicbrainz, you should at least be more aware about what MusicBrainz is, beyond just the fancy words in the mission statement. :)
livewire94
Yes can be done !! :D
Sure
Freso
And then on Monday we can probably get you started on poking at the MB codebase. :)
livewire94
I'll do that... :)
Thanks for your help ! :)
Freso
Great. And of course, just feel free to ask any questions along the way. :)
