if we remove disc IDs, but maintain a mapping of them to TOCs, what are we removing then?

all the hassle of maintaining medium-disc id mappings

a TOC is attached to a release. A disc ID is only an identifier for the TOC

yes, and I'm saying we can break that connection and just have the table containing the tocs without it being linked to mediums

so you would remove the TOC from the releases?

what purpose do the TOCs have then, when they are not attached to anything. How would you search for releases "by disc"?

if we were to replace lookup by disc id with lookup based on track times (which was one of the suggestions), then it breaks for anyone who looks up using only the disc id, since we don't have the toc to get the track times. if we have a list of discid/tocs, we can convert the disc id back to the toc without the program having to be changed

what we would need to replace lookup by disc ID is a non-fuzzy lookup by TOC

with disc IDs we have multiple results. With fuzzy lookup we have even more.

nikki: I checked the code an the fuzzy lookup of the FreeDB gateway does work without TOCs, but the "primary" track times. It does include completely unrelated releases in the results, though.

maybe I should make it worse and contribute my stash of tracks :P

And since a spirit is immaterial it cannot have adipose tissue, and thus, a "fat spirit" would be a good thing.
