spam the wiki with it, while you're thinking of it :P
      • then you can just dig it up later when we can do genres
      • Ben\Sput
nikki: I wrote it down on the train to uni today
      • warp
        nikki: oh indeed!
      • nikki
is beta's search supposed to be not working?
      • nashant
Hi guys. I'm trying to do the DBDefs.pm set up. so all I need to set is MB_SERVER_ROOT="/home/musicbrainz/musicbrainz-server", REPLICATION_TYPE=RT_SLAVE, DB_STAGING_SERVER=0, WEB_SERVER="0.0.0.0:5000"? Are they the only things Ineed to edit?
      • ocharles
        and the databases
      • nashant
is that value for WEB_SERVER going to enable access from any LAN system?
      • warp
nashant: "0.0.0.0:5000" doesn't make sense for WEB_SERVER, you should leave that default or use the correct public address.
      • nashant
warp: well the default is "www.musicbrainz.example.com"
      • which doesn't seem right
      • warp
nashant: it is mostly used to construct links on the website and in e-mails sent by the server. it doesn't configure how you can connect to the server.
      • nashant
        oh right
      • Why do all the guides say that's an important part then?
      • warp
nashant: hm, the default in lib/DBDefs/Default.pm is "localhost:5000"
      • nashant
        well, never mind
      • warp
oh it it is DBDefs.pm.sample. that file probably needs some cleaning up.
      • Ben\Sput
      • nikki: reosarevok: you might also be interested in "Proposal Process" and "CSG" on that page
      • warp runs off
      • warp
        goodnight!
      • nashant
        night, and thanks
      • nikki
Ben\Sput: I take it you haven't read any of the existing discussion/plans then :P
      • Ben\Sput
        nikki: I read them afterwards
      • nikki: in particular genres
      • nikki
        I meant for locations
      • Ben\Sput
But no, I haven't read anything for locations apart from a quick glance at the summit notes
      • I assumed that they weren't being worked on in this schema change, so I didn't go looking around for stuff
      • warp
nikki: oh, just noticed I missed your question. beta _should_ be using the production search server.
      • nikki
oh, it seems to be back now
      • warp
        ah good
      • then I will go back to afk land
      • nashant
trying to sudo cpan carton. Should I do local::lib or sudo for Perl library directories?
      • Ok, I'm getting further. just carton install --deployment, and I got 275 distributions installed \n Installing modules failed
      • Leftmost
People are still ignorant of Unicode. (To resurrect a long-dead conversation.)
      • On Discogs, for example, I sent a message to someone about a Greek CD. The subject line got totally mangled.
      • hawke_1
        Leftmost: what client?
      • Leftmost
        Hmm?
      • hawke_1
Oh, right — not an email message?
      • Leftmost
No. The email they sent out when I got a response was fine, but on the site the message is mangled.
      • hawke_1
        Nice
      • nashant
Anyone know if ^ is correct?
      • Leftmost
If the email didn't get sent out right, the person never would have known what I was talking about. :-P
      • hawke_1
Boy it sure would be nice if there were some sort of standard protocol for messaging (a sort of “electronic mail” if you will), so that every web application didn’t have to implement their own internal messaging system.
      • nashant
hawke_1: I prefer to cut letters out of newspapers. That's why I get 2 papers in every language delivered every day.
      • Leftmost
nashant, what if there aren't two papers in a given language?
      • nashant
2 copies of the same one
      • Leftmost
What if there's no daily in a given language?
      • nikki
hawke_1: if every web application implementing their own means I don't have to deal with spam, I'll take each one implementing their own :P

      • Ben\Sput
Leftmost: then it's clearly not a valid language ;)

      • Leftmost
CallerNo6, that's me, but I'm going with fisticuffs.
      • nashant
Well, back to my original problem, anyone able to help with my "275 distributions installed \n Installing modules failed" issue? The only fail I can see is "! Couldn't find module or a distribution Hash::Merge (0)"
      • Ben\Sput
is it possible to add a "Abandoned" status to JIRA for style tickets?
      • nashant: I had similar issues when I got a sandbox on rika
      • nashant: I generally solved it by googleing the package for information I could pass into cpan to install it manually
      • nashant: IIRC, the readme (or some other doc, perhaps INSTALL) has info on installing packages
      • reosarevok
      • wow, really?
      • ruaok checks the date
      • ruaok
        nope, too early.
      • hawke_1
Lots of traceroutes commented there pointing to it being indeed in NK
      • Leftmost
        Wow.
      • ruaok
hawke: yea, but do they really do the heavy lifting from there?
      • catalonia, ftw, btw. :)
      • hawke_1
        define heavy lifting

        anything that required real bandwidth.
      • *s
      • Ben\Sput can't access pirate bay cause it's blocked in the UK :P
      • hawke_1
I’m not sure that they actually require a lot of bandwidth
      • ruaok
hawke: not compared to actually hosting the content, no.
      • but TBP is massive operation.
      • I think NK may have needed to double their bandwidth alottment.
      • (which is more a comment on NK, less so on TBP)
      • Freso
CallerNo6: You have to keep in mind that Leftmost's part Irish. They need the pitchforks the the turf, so fisticuffs is the preferred way to handle disputes.

i'm trying to set up a mb mirror on a debian but i can't manage to install perl dependencies with carton
      • i googled a lot but i can't find a solution yet
      • nikki
let's guess, it complains about cpanfile?
      • mpnico
        yes
      • nikki
      • I really hope ianmcorvidae was right about there being an update to the install file ready
      • mpnico
okay new carton version, i see :)
      • hawke_1
nikki: It’s good to know that lots of people are installing it though, right?
      • nikki
        I guess?
      • mpnico
how many before me today with the same question ? ;)
      • nikki
        you're the 6th afaik
      • mpnico
okay carton now works, i was trying to install each perl module one by one but...

Alright guys. I'm getting "peer authentication failed" when running 'carton exec ./admin/InitDb.pl -- --createdb --clean'
      • Ha! another cpanfiler
      • mpnico: have you managed to install Hash::Merge?
      • can anyone tell me what they put for SYSTEM in the databases config in DBDefs.pm ?
      • Anyone?
      • reosarevok
        Not me, certainly
      • Does whatever is in defaults not work?
      • (there's a Defaults DBDefs file somewhere but I don't remember where)
      • nashant
Should I just comment it out?
      • mpnico
        no i just saw i can't install Hash::Merge
