ruaok
come back.
-
changes two things at once. :(
-
I'll test balloon this one small table.
-
ocharles
have you tried just restarting totoro at all, out of interest?
-
ruaok
not totoro.
-
pg, yes.
-
no change
-
ocharles
ok
-
uk joined the channel
-
ruaok
label table reindexed.
-
that was nice and fast and indeed locked everything.
-
I rather doubt its the indexes.
-
I think I would prefer to up shared_buffers
-
ocharles
yea, I'd put more weight on that
-
To change that, you should change things in server-configs
-
ruaok
I suspect it would be faster if you did that, rather than me learning that now.
-
ocharles
ok
-
ruaok: so you want to go to 10GB?
-
ruaok
yeah. thoughts?
-
ocharles
it's not much further from where you are
-
May be better to try 12
-
ruaok
thats 50%
-
if there are detrimental effects we're likely to hit them at 50%
-
misterswag joined the channel
-
ocharles
ok, we'll try 10 then
-
ruaok
shall I tweet about a quick downtime?
-
ocharles
sure
-
I don't really have time to do a proper downtime release tohugh...
-
ruaok
how long does it take?
-
ocharles
If you ./provision.sh on totoro, you'll pull in new sysctl settings and higher shared_buffers
-
ruaok
I'm just thinking setting the whole site to 503.
-
alastairp
JonnyJD_: around?
-
ianmcorvidae: too
-
ocharles
that would be easier, yea
-
ruaok
and then do the provision, and then restart.
-
I tweet & drive proxy, you provision?
-
ocharles
sounds good
-
ruaok
twatted.
-
ocharles
ruaok: ok, well I'm ready to try and provision again
-
ruaok
ok, me too.
-
hang on.
-
ocharles
k, just shout when
-
ruaok
feh, still up.
-
ok, site down.
-
go
-
ocharles watches
-
good job us.
-
we started right on top of the hour. :(
-
and didn't turn off cron on astro.
-
ocharles
ruaok: it's back up with 10GB
-
good timing.
-
we had enough sysctl settings for 10gb without a reboot
-
ruaok
should be coming back up now.
-
both main and beta are 502ing.
-
come totoro, read faster!
-
Jozo
Is toroto main db? How much memory it has?
-
ocharles
24GB, I think
-
and yea, it's the main database
-
ruaok
yep
-
beta is back.
-
ok, site is responding normally now.
-
ocharles
that was snappy
-
reosarevok
-
(or at least taking ages to load)
-
ruaok
disk hasn't calmed down yet.
-
Jozo
What I calculated indexes need over 20GB. (Someone can verify that)
-
reosarevok
Yeah, still 504
-
reosarevok sulks
-
ruaok
stuck proc killer restarted.
-
load much better.
-
but, effectively nothing has changed. :(
-
ocharles
I may be able to do a better job tonight when I'm not trying to do two jobs concurrently
-
ruaok
ok, thanks for your time now.
-
ocharles
but I have a (different) meeting at 8pm
-
I'll keep fiddling until I leave the office
-
But I'm not sure what to suggets :(
-
ruaok
I'd love for you to pop back in later when Ian is here.
-
ocharles
the fact the timeouts aren't working is something that should be investigated
-
because they do work in the psql shell
-
ruaok
for sure.
-
ocharles
so I wonder if musicbrainz-server is actually setting them correctly
-
that would at least remove the need for your stuck process killer
-
ruaok
agreed.
-
well, we've ruled out a few things.
-
I'l keep my eye on things and see how things progress.

alastairp: around
-
alastairp
cool. pushing a release out now
-
JonnyJD_
alastairp: did you have a look at the outstanding PRs?
-
there are 2 I think that mainly need review / your decision
-
alastairp
not yet. just verifying the changelog now, then I'll do that
-
ok
-
105 & 135?
-
JonnyJD_
alastairp: yes
-
Jozo
-
Is all indexes over 24GB?
-
adhawkins
ocharles: Presume you saw this: :)
-
-
Jozo
I have some musicbrainz-database git checkout... And I'm not aplle compile it (yet)...
-
kepstin-laptop is glad he got a thinkpad before they managed to introduce this abomination: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zT8pPS0JPrQ :/
-
reosarevok
kepstin-laptop: did you get the one with the weird trackpad?
-
misterswag joined the channel
-
kepstin-laptop
yes, but that's actually usable with software tweaks.
-
reosarevok
Yeah, I mean, I'm thinking of a T540p and wondering how weird/annoying that is
-
kepstin-laptop
it's actually worse in windows than linux, because you lose the middle button in windows
-
(it's permanently set to 'scroll', and doesn't send a middle click event)
-
alastairp
kepstin-laptop: so much opportunity for hacking!
-
reosarevok never uses a middle button, so not a problem
-
kepstin-laptop uses it *all the time* to open stuff in tabs
-
kepstin-laptop
and paste, on linux
-
reosarevok
I use ctrl+click since my lappy doesn't have a middle button
-
alastairp: what, do you want to display "if u read this ur dumb" in there instead of the keys? :p
-
alastairp
:D
-
kepstin-laptop
it looks like it's kind of neat - a touch-sensitive oled screen
-
but they could have had that in addition to some real buttons rather than instead of them :/
-
reosarevok
kepstin-laptop: my main worry is that the whole "all pad goes down" thing will feel too awkward
-
(it seems noisy but well, I'm way too noisy with the keyboard already anyway :p)
-
kepstin-laptop
reosarevok: it's not that bad.
-
if you click on the top, only the top seems to go down.
-
has almost 1mm of travel
-
reosarevok
And on the bottom?
-
Jozo has left the channel
-
kepstin-laptop
why would you ever click on the bottom?
-
there's a trackpoint you could be using.
-
reosarevok
Wel, I've never used a trackpoint, so that's where I'm used to click
-
So at least until I get used to it...
-
hawke joined the channel
-
(tbh having my finger in that tiny red thing feels really weird, although I should try it out more)
-
kepstin-laptop
if you click on the bottom, only the bottom seems to go town (the trackpoint kind of tilts)
-
uk joined the channel
-
reosarevok
Good :)
-
kepstin-laptop
if you click in the middle, the entire thing goes down
-
reosarevok
Now *that* is something I don't know why anyone would ever do :D
-
kepstin-laptop
(you can left-click by pushing down anywhere on the pad)
-
reosarevok
Well, I guess I should ask to use my friend's old thinkpad for a bit to see if I can get used to the trackpoint :)
-
kepstin-laptop
the linux multitouch doesn't work properly for clicking and dragging with one finger on a button area, the other moving
-
that's a driver bug tho, the pad supports 5-finger tracking fully.
-
reosarevok
Hmm. So it'll probably get fixed
-
Good
-
kepstin-laptop
(it works sometimes, but it's annoyingly inconsistant)
-
seems to depend which order you put fingers on the pad :/
-
usually ends up just making you multitouch scroll instead :/
-
uk has registered nick chirlu` and will use that henceforth.
-
reosarevok
Can't you deactivate the scroll?
-
kepstin-laptop
yes, but then scrolling sucks.
-
ocharles
adhawkins: yea :)
-
reosarevok really doesn't like trackpad scrolling anyway, that's what pgup/pgdn are for
-
kepstin-laptop
the only thing I use the touchpad for is for the trackpoint buttons and scroll gesture.
-
reosarevok
Ok, I *think* I can live with that then :)
-
(if not I bet I can re-sell it to some European who wants it anyway :p)
