ijabz
So essentially, fixing this issue had an unintended side-effect of dramatically increase the amount of data returned for some web service lookups, which I feel is the last thing we want seeing as we already have problems with 502's due to too much data already
ruaok
ocharles: its not a change, per se, but we're generating more replication packets.
noes!
ijabz
So my feeling is it shouldn't be released until the problem with artist aliases being shown on works was fixed whereas ocharles was happy to release it as it was, and fix the artaist aliases being shown on works at some time in the future.
I worry that fix could take some time, or not ever happen
warp thinks ijabz has a valid concern.
ocharles
I do too
ruaok
lets leave a fix until we can do this right then.
ocharles
But we are all unclear on the /actual/ impact of the 4021 fix
ruaok
maybe the ws/3 design can shed some light on this how we might tackle this in the future.
ocharles
to clarify, I mostly want to fix the actual problem (excessive data) separately, and communicate it clearly
ruaok
and them apply hose concepts to this fix.
warp
what's the status of 4021, is it on code review? beta?
ruaok
but I might be smoking rock
ocharles
it should not be fixed as a step to fix another bug
warp: reverted
warp
ocharles: ok
ijabz
Yes its a seperate issue, but until fixed I don't think we can release this fix
ruaok
agreed. lets look for a proper solution then. then we'll release this.
ok, last topic, but a tricky one.
brianfreud is back. again.
sigh.

reosarevok
Well, he's been editing all this time
Was he not supposed to?
ruaok
I had basically told him that if he were to return to MB and to continuing to disrupt things, that I was would publicly thrown him out.
reosarevok
Main difference is he does now have a broken cover art bot and for some reason he's stopped answering notes
ruaok
so public that future employers would find it.
reosarevok
Which is why I wanted to take the mail down so he'll actually take notice
ocharles
I don't see a need to be that personal about this
navap__
Ouch
ruaok
nikki and murdos pointed out that he is doing a ton of sloppy auto-edits.
ocharles: I'm open for suggestions. nothing has worked.
ocharles
well if the edits are dangerous now, then auto-editors need to decide if he still deserves that right
ruaok
so, removing his email so he can't edit anymore is a first step that is non-descructive. I can do that.
ocharles
so an auto-editor who is being directly impacted by this needs to post to the AE list, I think
i don't think it's an admins right to step in here, personally
ruaok
that seems like a fair solution.
I'd rather not make that call, TBH.
murdos: would you like to post to the AE list?
warp
ruaok: I believe he contributed some useful javascript performance improvements which ianmcorvidae got through code review with some changes. he means well and not everything he does is bad for MB.
murdos
I'd rather not either
ocharles
someone who's active in that community needs to be the one to get a feeling for the general consensus, imo
ruaok
murdos: can I use your email to make a post?
murdos
ruaok: I don't know. Maybe if can read it before. BUt why me and not nikki?
navap__
You mean posting as murdos?
ruaok
murdos: I know nikki doesn't like posting things period. :)
navap_: no. just forwarding his mail with his points.
ocharles
I would be OK with making the post if no one more appropriate wants to
ruaok
but if that isn't desired, then I will just say something like: "I've received complaints from people. please eval his current actions and decide if we should take action"
how is that?
murdos
ruaok: you mean a post on the autoeditor-mailing list?
ocharles
ruaok: yep, that's the type of thing i'm suggesting
ruaok
murdos: yes
ocharles
just mention that there are formal complaints, and you'd like to hear if these are one offs, or recurring
ruaok
ocharles: I was hoping to use the concrete examples that were included in that email.
ocharles
yep, if you have concrete examples, they should be used
reosarevok
ruaok: the concrete examples are factual data, go use it :p
ocharles
to determine if they are recurring or not
ruaok
I want to get nikki's permission first.
if not I will go with something generic.
ok, that closes that for now.
ocharles
if there's a bot running with damaging data and we have no contact, then maybe stepping in and removing the email address is worth the social compromise
ruaok
brace yourselves… drama is coming!
warp
hah
ruaok
I will defeinitely remove the email in the meantime.
ok, thanks everyone.
warp
warp has changed the topic to: Agenda: empty!
murdos
ruaok: feel free to contact me by mail if you need
ocharles
ocharles has changed the topic to: Agenda: error: Cannot take head of empty list
ruaok
great meeting once again -- we get lots of shit done in this meetings. :)
(not that I think anyone would ask you not to, either)
bitmap
ocharles: fyi conflicts with beta are resolved
ruaok
reosarevok: its called being polite. I can actually do that sometimes.
ocharles
reosarevok: when humans are involved, taking absolute precaution is always a good idea :)
bitmap: \o/
nikki
ruaok: linking to some of the edits from that email is fine by me
ruaok
nikki: ok, thanks.
navap__ goes back to work
ocharles pops the moka pot on
reosarevok
ruaok: maybe. Guess I just don't see how clicking some of those links, seeing the mess and maybe describing it with your own words could possibly be a problem
(of course, just forwarding the mail is a different thing)
nikki
yeah, I don't particularly want the whole email forwarding. but the examples in it are fine
reosarevok
I also don't think he is the only autoeditor making a mess every once in a while, although admittedly he's the only one who hasn't replied to edit notes after it
I think
adhawkins
Hi guys
warp makes a mess every once in a while.
Does MB have any cross-compilation environments at all?
nikki
there are other people who make a mess, but most of the time they'll clean it up if you prompt them. this isn't the first time brian hasn't cleaned up his own mess after it was pointed out to him
adhawkins
Had a request for cross-compilation of libmb, wondering if there was one before I start trying to set up my own
nikki
instead he's just continued to make the mess even worse
warp
adhawkins: I don't think we have any compilation environments, let alone cross-compilation :)
warp: with haskell-musicbrainz-ws2 we can run on arm!
though... you can compile perl for arm too
dngor joined the channel
http://ali.as/top100/ a catalyst example application has the most amount of dependencies for any package on cpan
warp
:)
ocharles
ha, and the build utilities have the most failures
that adds up to a bit of disaster :)
warp
when do we start the language discussions for NES? :)
ocharles
as soon as you start one :)
the in more seriousness, not sure if we're there yet, but i guess it will have to happen
dngor
Is there a way to search for tracks or filter them by substring within Picard? I need to find certain tracks... I know what they are, but I don't know where Picard clustered them.
warp
I think most of our developers would be quite happy to move away from perl.
ocharles
warp: i don't know anyone who wants to stay with it, so you're probably right there
dngor
The higher up the food chain you go, the more dependencies you pull in. You won't find that different in another language.
ocharles
dngor: you will find different scales and growth rates
warp
dngor: the dependencies in perl are considerably more granular than I'm used to from other languages.
ocharles
you also depend on things that are part of most other languages
e.g., python and haskell already have a sensible object system and parameter parsers, so you don't need to depend on them
dngor
Higher granularity is a good thing from the perspective of import efficiency. You could import fewer things that do more than you need.
