I downloaded picard and tried tagging a few flac albums

but there were certain fields I noticed were missing, such as "writer" and "publisher"

they seem to be standard musicbrainz fields (since the tag editor let me add them myself) but is there any way to get musicbrainz to add them automatically?

Either you haven't enabled the correct relationship option in Picard's settings, or the release you're tagging against doesn't have those relationships at musicbrainz.org

thanks navap, I've now enabled track relationships, will see if that helps...

in the event that the data simply isn't in the musicbrainz db are there any other databases you would recommend I could check to cull this information?

I really have no expertise in this area, I wasn't sure if maybe echonest would be helpful

They're into audio fingerprints, I don't see how they'd be helpful

It depends on the type of music you have but other sources might be wikipedia or discogs

If you do find the missing metadata, I invite you to create an account and add that data to musicbrainz.org so that the next person with Picard is able to get it

just wasn't sure if I could use the puid/acoustid to crossreference another database and try to get the info
I lost the link for setting up the lucene indexes for the search server. Anyone?
