anything else than the length of the file would be wrong

but saving the length of the file to tag seems useless

especially since mutagen can't read the length correctly for vbr files

milliseconds, represented as a numeric string.

picard does not know the length of the audio file

it knows a number it thinks is a good estimate of the length

but it doesn't bother making sure it has the correct length

with some formats it knows the exact length, because they have it in the header

but mp3 is not such format, you need to decode the audio to get the length

which is why things like the Xing header or TLEN exist

but picard is not the best place to write such tags

not unless it calculates the length

it's not really important to have that tag

so it's quite resonable picard does not touch it

there are many tools to write xing/info headers to mp3 files

they are more useful than the tlen tag

this regarding assigning genres to entities, they had three categories: "Mainly", "Quite" and "Hints of"

each could contain multiple genres

no idea, discogs and wikipedia would be probably the starting point

I wanted most genres to have a wikipedia page

personally what we need to do is *define* what we mean with genre x, before wecan say "hat things are genre x"

the advantage of having genres on artists is that they can represent something different than the aggregate genres from recordings
