so, `javac -classpath <something> *.java would be a good start

as for what <something> is.... I think you can give it the path to your lucene.jar file

(it's been a while since my last java job too...)

I thought I added that path...echo ${CLASSPATH} is giving me the path I gave it...

is it a directory or the actual jar?

I'm not sure what you're doing there

you should set the classpath by:

export CLASSPATH=/home/jeff/solr-5.1.0/server/solr-webapp/webapp/WEB-INF/lib/*:.

(or lucene-core in place of * to try)

I'm reading the solr 5 upgrade docs. It looks like my stuff is really out of date now

I would actually recommend against trying to learn maven right away - it's ... not easy

that is - if you were just going to use the existing package with solr 4, fine.

but having a starting point is much easier than trying to develop from scratch

hmm, since solr 5.1 is still based on jetty (although they don't promise this in any future versions), it should still be possible to adapt my package
