Jira and RT are the big 2 I've found that could be a solution to project management

aCiD2`: on test, I assume catalyst is running differently. what happens when something does blow up?
2009-12-14 34833, 2009
ruaok
so, as I've mentioned previously today, we need to get our act together wrt to project management.

warp: It's meant to just say "come back soon"
2009-12-14 34829, 2009
ruaok
so, the question is... what tools do we use for that.
2009-12-14 34844, 2009
aCiD2`
Well, Trac is not enough imo
2009-12-14 34845, 2009
ruaok
and if someone says M$ Project, I'll fly to wherever you are and SLAP you.
2009-12-14 34856, 2009
ruaok
ok, well virtual slap anyways.
2009-12-14 34857, 2009
aCiD2`
I think we should try MS Project

haha
2009-12-14 34812, 2009

you know I WILL slap you, silly bugger!
2009-12-14 34815, 2009
luciddrmr
do you guys have a firm set of requirements you can't live without? that probably makes the decision-making somewhat easier, yeah?
2009-12-14 34816, 2009
aCiD2`
:D
2009-12-14 34820, 2009

I will see you again at some point.

Jira and RT I've bene looking at, and they gave us more than Trac. good time estimating, linking issues together with dependencies, and nice milestone tracking

ruaok: I have no experience with such tools, as a general rule prefer free / open source software over propietary.
2009-12-14 34859, 2009
ruaok
luciddrmr: I wouldn't even call it a firm set of requirements yet.
2009-12-14 34833, 2009
ruaok
I think the integration between issue tracking and project management makes sense.
2009-12-14 34845, 2009

I like how in JIRA you can estimate how long a task will take.
2009-12-14 34845, 2009

Perhaps make a list of specific things the current system cant do that your really need it to do
2009-12-14 34849, 2009

and make dependencies.
2009-12-14 34801, 2009
ruaok
that should allow us to get a big picture overview of what is coming.
luciddrmr: Yea, I spoke to some #perl guys in that and they say it's featureful, but not a dream to use

i definitely agree with that assessment of it

is it going to replace trac as our bug tracker then?
2009-12-14 34857, 2009
ruaok
jira is not free software sadly. but its gratis to us.
2009-12-14 34805, 2009
ruaok
nikki_: thats the idea, yes.
2009-12-14 34814, 2009
ruaok
but if that is a good idea, remains to be seen.

The Jira situation is we get the code to it, we get it for free (as we're open source) which is a fairly nice middle ground as far as proprietory goes
2009-12-14 34826, 2009
ruaok
second life uses jira and my friend who works there likes it.
2009-12-14 34830, 2009

RT is completely free
2009-12-14 34842, 2009
ruaok
and jira is now installed on our server.
2009-12-14 34851, 2009

I could install RT and then let people loose on both of them.
2009-12-14 34801, 2009

its also used by Apache
2009-12-14 34803, 2009

i'm not sure we have time for that
2009-12-14 34814, 2009

ijabz: yes, I was pleased to see that.
2009-12-14 34825, 2009

I haven't seen anything that either one couldn't do yet, so it's more down to preference, and for me Jira wins on the interface
2009-12-14 34835, 2009

should we setup jira and let people play?

I wouldn't mind migrating report #34 / ngs beta 1 over to Jira
2009-12-14 34857, 2009

I think we'll have to use <newtool> and trac side-by-side for a while, not introduce a new tool to users just reporting bugs until we've used it some time and decided we're happy with it.
2009-12-14 34802, 2009

and seeing how it can look if we have a real world case
2009-12-14 34808, 2009

ijabz: I've been using Jira myself for getting NGS out, and it's easier to organise myself if I can see dependencies and stuff
2009-12-14 34809, 2009
ruaok
and since the bounties are supposed to pay for warp, that is a very high priority as I see it.
2009-12-14 34817, 2009
warp nods.
2009-12-14 34829, 2009
ruaok
I think its nearly impossible to do a good job with the bounties if we are not properly organized.
2009-12-14 34851, 2009
ijabz
k, have we got a list of bounties now then
2009-12-14 34802, 2009
