zazi: most of the links can be read in both directions. e.g. artist performed vocal on recording. recording has vocals by artist.
      • zazi: but it is pointless to have both an l_artist_recording and an l_recording_artist in the database.
      • zazi
yes, they can always be read in both directions (I would say)
      • yeah, I know you just need them in one direction
      • warp
zazi: so we picked l_artist_recording, because alphabetically artist comes first, so the l_artist_* tables were made first.
      • zazi: similarly l_url_work just happened to occur before l_work_url happened.
      • zazi
but it might be good (from my point of view) when the ordering might be consistent, i.e., entity to url
      • yeah, but url is somehow an alien concept re. your other music related concepts ;)
      • warp
well, you can't say that for example entities linking to recording should always have recording as the second slot
      • zazi
so I would treat music related concepts always first
      • warp
there just isn't that much logic which can be applied to it, you'll in most cases get conflicts. so someone just picked alphabetical.
      • zazi
        hm
      • warp
in any case it's too late to change it now unless you have a very good reason :)
      • zazi
fortunately, your url table includes gids ;)
      • well, I tried to explained my point of view ...
      • -ed
      • i.e. I'll model the relation from work (an entry of database/website) to url (something from an external information service)
      • ... your database/website ...

zazi: you can't read the "l_x_y" tables as "from x to y"
      • they are really just "relation between x and y"
      • zazi
I know, I have the read them in both directions
      • luks
must be hard coming from RDF where things are directional :)
      • zazi
however, I just have an issue with the constellation for work to url relations (i.e. how they stored in the table)
      • luks
yeah, they are just consistently alphabetically ordered
      • if they weren't, the code you have to contain a lot of special cases
      • zazi
because this reflects another new case for, where I have to create another generic query for my test cases
      • bitmap
nikki: awesome, thanks for testing :)
      • ocharles
        28618
      • Does this number seem accurate?
      • randomly picking some gids, I get stuff like http://musicbrainz.org/recording/a076dcf5-1d31-... so I think my query is accurate (off for review shortly)
      • maybe I should also make sure the recording has no relationships?
      • (this is just all recordings with no 'add standalone recording' or 'add track' edit in their history, and that appear on no tracklist)
      • luks
        what are orphaned recordings?
      • oh, /me should read first
      • ocharles
recordings created by an add release edit that got voted down
      • at least that's what we're trying to clean up
      • luks
well, try to filter by date too, just in case
      • ocharles
which date? most seem to have null for last_updated
      • hrm, my own standalone recordings show up, query must be wrong :)
      • luks
        don't they have created data?
      • ah, they don't
      • ocharles
        nope
      • oh, there are 3 edit types. With the other add track edit type, the count is 6330

those l_url_work tables drive me nuts :P
      • VectorX
        didnt know you had them
      • nikki already made a view for l_work_url

        VectorX: ?
      • VectorX
        nuts
      • nikki did not say 'my'
      • just remembered an old joke
      • A pirate walks into a bar, and he's got a steering wheel sticking out of his pants. The bartender sees him and asks, "Hey, what's that steering wheel doing there?" The pirate says, "Aaarrrr, it's driving me nuts."
      • nikki knows it
      • nikki
        but I'm not a pirate today :P
      • VectorX
        sign
      • nikki
        :P
      • VectorX
well even if you were, i dont think you would fit the description anyway
      • nikki does technically have nuts.... hazelnuts :P
      • gsus
      • im gonna go have some salted penuts

      • ruaok: is the new macbook air worth the price then?
      • (not that I could pay for it right now, but still)
      • ruaok
        so far, yes!
      • the weight and the 7 hour promised battery time should make a drastic improvement over my macbook.
      • nikki
what's the difference between the macbook air and the macbook?
      • nikki read something about the macbook vanishing
      • ruaok
the air is really thin and has an SSD, no hard drive.
      • 3 pounds is all it weighs.
      • and for as much as I travel, that is key.
      • long battery life for long flights and light to go anywhere.
      • so far: <3
      • MBChatLogger
        I hate the evil empire
      • reosarevok
To be honest, I'm kinda annoyed with Apple at the moment
      • CD drive stuck, back light flickering, I've had to change the power cable, and this macbook is less than 3 years old
      • nikki
I want to get a new computer but I think I'll probably just sit here saying this until the macbook kicks the bucket, then just buy the cheapest mac laptop again >_<
      • nikki is too indecisive
      • reosarevok thinks he will do the same, except that he will import a 150€ netbook from Taiwan
      • but which one!? :P
      • reosarevok
(unless I magically find a job before the tragic day happens)
      • nikki: the cheapest one that can browse the internet
      • When it dies, repeat
      • nikki is more ambitious and wants plenty of screen space
      • nikki
and the ability to play videos properly again...
      • ianmcorvidae needs to purchase a new monitor at some point here
      • reosarevok
nikki could connect the crappy netbook to a monitor
      • reosarevok thought she did that with the macbook anyway
      • nikki
or I could connect a not so crappy laptop to a monitor and have even more space!
      • and yes, I do
      • reosarevok
nikki: you could buy a THIRD monitor for much less than the difference! :D
      • nikki
how would I plug two monitors into a laptop?
      • reosarevok is sure there's a way
      • reosarevok
        Probably some adapter or whatever
      • The Chinese make *everything*!
      • (except democratic progress and all that)
      • nikki
but still, I want to be able to use the laptop elsewhere :P
      • if I wanted a tiny screen I'd just use my phone for stuff :P
      • reosarevok does, but the difference for IRC and MB and a couple more things is kinda big between 3" and 9" :p
      • ianmcorvidae
totally possible to plug two in, but the video card could easily be the limitation there
      • reosarevok
Not that the video cards in (at least "cheap") macbooks are too good either…

hm. now that I'm putting in a rate-of-change graph, {votes, edits} per {day, week} seem very silly
      • also they disagree
      • with the rates of change
      • only on older data, looks like, though
      • back when we could have non-monotonic vote counts
      • for whatever reason :P
      • ruaok
ianmcorvidae: got link for your rate-of-change graphs?
      • yay, the VM is now catching up on replication.
      • ianmcorvidae
ruaok: not right this second, I can give you one in a few minutes
      • ruaok
        sweet, that would nice.
      • ianmcorvidae watches it be super-duper slow as I try to make sure my SSH tunnel works
      • ianmcorvidae
okay, http://viriosus.ianmcorvidae.net:3000/statistic... I'm heading out to pick up Batsy at work
      • if it'll load for you in any reasonable time :P
