i'm interested in using it on a pretty big archive.

I'm fixing some threading issues in the mb wrappers...
2003-02-21 05250, 2003
icepick
then they user will not have to wait at all
2003-02-21 05256, 2003
icepick
very nice
2003-02-21 05210, 2003
icepick
it's text only and it works
2003-02-21 05233, 2003
icepick
because of a server problem it doesn't handle MACs the way I want it too yet
2003-02-21 05216, 2003

i don't suppose the tagger supports renaming files, or gathering id3 information from filenames where the id3 info is wrong or the trmid isn't in the database, does it?
2003-02-21 05252, 2003
icepick
does renaming
2003-02-21 05208, 2003
icepick
the filename parsing code is not working quite yet
what I'm thinking is... do a FileInfo query, if it doesn't have anything, then parse the filename,
2003-02-21 05231, 2003

Mutiny: are they on a sshable box? do you mind giving me a an account? can you get all the depends working first?
2003-02-21 05248, 2003
Mutiny
what depends do you need?
2003-02-21 05259, 2003
Mutiny
i have a 'catalog' of the files that might be more useful.
2003-02-21 05224, 2003
Mutiny
filename + path, trmid, size, id3 artist+album+title, encoding parameters, etc.
2003-02-21 05245, 2003
icepick
get tagger.py working on your machine and we'll talk
2003-02-21 05248, 2003
icepick
shower time
2003-02-21 05210, 2003
Mutiny
ok
2003-02-21 05259, 2003
icepick
and let me know if you have any questions
2003-02-21 05205, 2003
icepick
Mutiny: it would take a lot of work for me to tweak my code to deal with your catalog
2003-02-21 05225, 2003
icepick
maybe not a lot but I have no desire to do it... sorry
2003-02-21 05251, 2003
Mutiny
okay then, nevermind
2003-02-21 05200, 2003
Mutiny
i can do it
2003-02-21 05242, 2003
icepick
Mutiny: you code python?
2003-02-21 05252, 2003
Mutiny
mmhmm
2003-02-21 05218, 2003
Mutiny
sure do

I'm glad somebody already wrote this tagger code for me. I've got alot of mp3s that need massaging.
2003-02-21 05226, 2003
phidauex
massaging indeed :)
2003-02-21 05206, 2003
phidauex
i've already 'massaged' a few thousand mp3s on my PC.. its slow work, especially since many of them aren't in the musicbrainz database yet (or rather, they are now, but weren't before)
2003-02-21 05219, 2003
icepick
4.3 GB of sorted stuff....
2003-02-21 05223, 2003
icepick
16.9 to go
2003-02-21 05254, 2003
icepick
then there is the semi-sorted
2003-02-21 05219, 2003
phidauex
i've got 32Gb total, i'm not sure exactly how far through it I am. A lot of what I have was already well organized into albums and well tagged, and those are going fast, but I just got several gigs of great hiphop and stuff from a friend of mine, and while the music is awesome, his complete inability to organize or properly tag mp3s has made it really slow to go through
2003-02-21 05238, 2003
Mutiny
I've got 637gb
2003-02-21 05253, 2003
phidauex
you serious?
2003-02-21 05256, 2003
phidauex
thats lunacy
2003-02-21 05257, 2003
phidauex
:)
2003-02-21 05236, 2003
phidauex
I've tried to keep my collection trimmed to stuff I really like. i don't like having a lot of fluff. though i can understand the desire to collect for the sake of it. :)
2003-02-21 05255, 2003
icepick
Mutiny: that's fucked up man... you work and a music store and rip every cd?
2003-02-21 05224, 2003
Mutiny
no
2003-02-21 05231, 2003
phidauex
that would be over 1000 cds uncompressed! :)
2003-02-21 05203, 2003
Mutiny
only constrained by disk, within a few weeks of upgrading to 1.4tb that'll be filled too
2003-02-21 05219, 2003
phidauex
if you submit all those you'll singlehandedly double the number of entries in the mb database ;)
2003-02-21 05236, 2003
phidauex
where do you get them? just download? or rip lots?
2003-02-21 05245, 2003
Mutiny
people uploaded them
2003-02-21 05253, 2003
phidauex
ahh
2003-02-21 05226, 2003
Mutiny
yeah i offered to submit them, but i don't know how interested they are *shrug*
2003-02-21 05226, 2003
icepick
Mutiny: ok... you are my main user then
2003-02-21 05235, 2003
phidauex
does tunetagger have support for submitting the TRM ids like the windows client?
2003-02-21 05214, 2003
phidauex
heh, with over half a terabyte of mp3s, already cataloged, it might be worth writing a script to parse the data in the catalog :)
2003-02-21 05242, 2003
icepick
phidauex: yes... it does it in batchs of 15 so you don't loose too much if it crashes
2003-02-21 05206, 2003
phidauex
excellent
2003-02-21 05225, 2003
Mutiny
i already 'extracted' all the meta data from the archive
2003-02-21 05238, 2003
Mutiny
it took ~4 days to generate all the trmids
2003-02-21 05252, 2003
phidauex
hot damn
2003-02-21 05207, 2003
icepick
tunetagger also downloads cover art
2003-02-21 05219, 2003
phidauex
i noticed that when i was perusing the source :)
2003-02-21 05224, 2003
phidauex
very cool
2003-02-21 05233, 2003
icepick
Mutiny: you shouldn't have too much trouble using my code..
2003-02-21 05250, 2003
phidauex
Eventually it would be nice for musicbrainz to support all the ID3v2 frames, including the goodies like cover art
2003-02-21 05250, 2003
icepick
you want to make use of the the musicfile.MusicFile object
2003-02-21 05209, 2003
icepick
phidauex: TT is doing just that...
2003-02-21 05243, 2003
phidauex
:)
2003-02-21 05257, 2003
phidauex
client support, then server support
2003-02-21 05202, 2003
Mutiny
icepick: i don't expect i will. i'm probably going to give it a run through later today.
2003-02-21 05210, 2003
Mutiny
after i set up traffic shaping for codecon
2003-02-21 05237, 2003
icepick
I just want the date of the release in MB
2003-02-21 05242, 2003
icepick
after that I don't care
2003-02-21 05227, 2003
phidauex
that would be nice to have
2003-02-21 05209, 2003
phidauex
composer and interpreted/remixed by would also be nice, and could help with some of the difficulties with classical music
2003-02-21 05220, 2003
icepick
unsure how that would fix in my file naming scheme tho
2003-02-21 05219, 2003
phidauex
filenaming is a hassle.. i'm not sure of the best way to do it really :) so far i use /artist/album/artist - tracknumber - songname.mp3|ogg
2003-02-21 05247, 2003
phidauex
but its easy to get ridiculously long filenames
2003-02-21 05255, 2003
icepick
how do you pick songs to play?
2003-02-21 05221, 2003
phidauex
I usually make an empty playlist, and then start drag'n'dropping files or folders that i want to listen too. organizing in folders the way I do makes it pretty easy for me to just drag in whole albums, which is what i usually do. then i put it on shuffle and go nuts
2003-02-21 05244, 2003
phidauex
i also have things organized by genre, but i don't pay attention to the genre tag, i organize them myself
2003-02-21 05246, 2003
icepick
so why does it matter if you filenames are long
2003-02-21 05255, 2003
phidauex
burning to cd ;)
2003-02-21 05220, 2003
phidauex
over a certain number of characters, i don't remember how many, you stop conforming to the cd filename standards
2003-02-21 05232, 2003
icepick
65
2003-02-21 05233, 2003
icepick
64
2003-02-21 05238, 2003
phidauex
special characters ending up in filenames can also be an issue
2003-02-21 05211, 2003
phidauex
i'm not sure if some software already does this, but it would be nice to have support for removing special chars and truncating the length of the filename when doing file renaming
2003-02-21 05240, 2003
phidauex
so the cdburner doesn't cough with 200 errors about overly-long filenames :)
2003-02-21 05234, 2003
icepick
you could very easyly add it and send me a patch
2003-02-21 05249, 2003
phidauex
:)
2003-02-21 05201, 2003
phidauex
i need to see about getting tunetagger running first
2003-02-21 05242, 2003
icepick
where are you hung up at the moment?
2003-02-21 05259, 2003
phidauex
oh, i haven't even given it a solid try yet :)
2003-02-21 05226, 2003
phidauex
what do you mean by 'musicbrainz + python wrapper' dependency?
2003-02-21 05258, 2003
icepick
what os are you on (i think I should know this already )
2003-02-21 05214, 2003
phidauex
os x
2003-02-21 05223, 2003
phidauex
so it may not work :)
2003-02-21 05202, 2003
icepick
ahh... yes... that is a problem
2003-02-21 05209, 2003
icepick
send robert $$$
2003-02-21 05211, 2003
icepick
:)
2003-02-21 05225, 2003
phidauex
so its still reliant on the mb_client libraries?
2003-02-21 05235, 2003
phidauex
i chatted robert up yesterday
2003-02-21 05250, 2003
phidauex
he said he'd let me know as soon as things are in a usable state
icepick: Seems it isn't there. I'll mail the file, thanks.
2003-02-21 05233, 2003

BTW: NetBSD now has a current musicbrainz package :-)
2003-02-21 05238, 2003

bye
2003-02-21 05247, 2003

what kind of a stupid moron messed up the sort name for dave matthews band
2003-02-21 05214, 2003
phidauex
lol
2003-02-21 05227, 2003
phidauex
there are some wierd things in there..
2003-02-21 05258, 2003
phidauex
i've been wrestling with getting dan the automator made into his own artist instead of being trapped as an alias of anandji & kalandji
2003-02-21 05242, 2003
phidauex
there is a lot of work to be done, but at least the dream of a clean database is possible, unlike the static freedb
2003-02-21 05205, 2003
icepick
apparently this is correct "matthews, dave band"
2003-02-21 05215, 2003
icepick
but possibly the most fucked up thing I've seen
2003-02-21 05235, 2003
phidauex
are you sure thats how it should look? :P
2003-02-21 05231, 2003
phidauex
i think the actual title of the band is "The Dave Matthews Band" which would make the sortname "Dave Matthews Band, The"
2003-02-21 05255, 2003
phidauex
the name doesn't refer to a person, it refers to a band, which happens to 'belong' to a person
2003-02-21 05204, 2003
icepick
I agree... let's change it
2003-02-21 05215, 2003
phidauex
right on

I've just d/ld trm-0.21 and tried to build it... the configure complains that I should have the MusicBrainz client >= 2.0.0 but the client on the web site is only 0.2.1... what to do?
2003-02-21 05236, 2003
phidauex
what OS?
2003-02-21 05240, 2003

2003-02-21 05249, 2003
ekkis
rh 7.2
2003-02-21 05255, 2003
icepick
ekkis: that's very odd... what url was the 0.2.1 written?
2003-02-21 05213, 2003
phidauex
it probably means you need the client library, which should be at 2.0
2003-02-21 05244, 2003
phidauex
i think you need the MAD libraries and the libmusicbrainz library to build trm
