i don't have a job (actually, i sort of do, but i haven't started yet), so i just sleep whenever

Do you do programming? Keeping a web site up & stable is a real PITA. But fun.

i've been waiting (fruitlessly) for my website's servers to come back online so i can install a photo gallery for my girlfriend (gallery.sf.net) but they have been down all day :(
2003-03-31 09054, 2003
djce
It's so frustrating in some senses.

All these new, improved features which have been written, but actually getting them onto the live site isn't easy.

well, the job i got is working at a science museum. My job description is basically "Make sure the patrons of the museum find science fun and stimulating"
2003-03-31 09048, 2003
phidauex
yeah, i hear that, djce
2003-03-31 09052, 2003
djce
Cool. Sounds like a nice job.
2003-03-31 09000, 2003
phidauex
programming is basically a hobby for me, i've never been paid for it
2003-03-31 09035, 2003
phidauex
yeah, i get to give presentations to groups of kids, explain exhibits to people, design new exhibits, etc. science education is something i'm really into
2003-03-31 09046, 2003
phidauex
what sort of stuff are you integrating into the site, djce?
2003-03-31 09049, 2003
djce
(Mmmm. Need more morning coffee. Must wake up.)
2003-03-31 09003, 2003
djce
Improved search engine, that's the biggest one from my perspective.
2003-03-31 09011, 2003
djce
Improved security and validation.

Auto-warnings for entering tracks beginning with the track numbers.

phidauex
oh, small question.. do you use any sort of checks to make sure people aren't putting filth into the database, ie, replay attacks, or people submitting lots and lots of bogus data and trms?
2003-03-31 09055, 2003
djce
Those are the main ones I can think of for now...
2003-03-31 09010, 2003
djce
No, not yet.
2003-03-31 09028, 2003
phidauex
we are exploring the idea for audioscrobbler.. right now it would be painfully easy for a script kiddy to fill the database with bad data
2003-03-31 09040, 2003
djce
The actual bit which inserts the data as a moderation is fairly rough-n-ready. It pretty much accepts anything.
2003-03-31 09045, 2003
phidauex
we can basically rely on human goodness, but a few checks to make that harder could be warranted
2003-03-31 09058, 2003
phidauex
your voting system is nice
2003-03-31 09012, 2003
djce
Well, that's what the moderation system is for in a sense. But some things don't get voted on, e.g. adding TRMs
2003-03-31 09015, 2003
phidauex
but AS couldn't really have people vote on every single song submission ;)
2003-03-31 09019, 2003
djce
so bad TRMs could easily be added.
2003-03-31 09050, 2003
djce
Our moderation system is OK, but could be a lot better. Of course, that's a lotta work :-)
2003-03-31 09058, 2003
phidauex
mmhmm
2003-03-31 09021, 2003
djce
Voting is like the best and the worst part of MB.
2003-03-31 09046, 2003
djce
Great idea; real PITA to actually do. We have lots of dedicated people :-)
2003-03-31 09056, 2003
phidauex
i think the next step would be some sort of trust metric, so that people who are 'good modders' can be given priority moderation ability
2003-03-31 09008, 2003
phidauex
of course, how to do that right is something no one knows. :(
2003-03-31 09044, 2003
djce
Yes. At the moment that's just a two-stage thing - you're either a normal moderator, or an "automod" - i.e. your edits don't need votes to make them happen.
2003-03-31 09055, 2003
phidauex
i get frustrated when i tag an album, and find that the data is all messed up. I fix the data, but then i have to wait 24 hours or 48 hours before i can tag that album..
2003-03-31 09004, 2003
djce
At the moment there are about 30 auto moderators, I think. I'm not one of them :-)
2003-03-31 09057, 2003
phidauex
perhaps if there was a way to identify how big of a change was being made to an item, then as moderators gained 'karma' they could automod anything with a 'change percentage' of below a certain level
2003-03-31 09002, 2003
djce
Yes, you could do with an option for "I'd like to see the 'dirty' version of the data", i.e. as if all pending mods were accepted. That would be cool.
2003-03-31 09020, 2003
phidauex
as it stands, if i mod COWBOY BEBOP into Cowboy Bebop it gets automodded, it knows i can't be making a big change
2003-03-31 09057, 2003
djce
Yes, the logic at the moment for auto-moderation (no voting) is threefold:
2003-03-31 09009, 2003
djce
1) are you an auto-moderator?
2003-03-31 09019, 2003
djce
2) is the mod type an auto-type (e.g. add TRM)
2003-03-31 09039, 2003
djce
3) If it's an "edit" mod, and you're only changing the case (or accenting), that's an auto-mod.
2003-03-31 09048, 2003
djce
Everything else needs votes.
2003-03-31 09051, 2003
phidauex
ok
2003-03-31 09054, 2003
phidauex
makes sense
2003-03-31 09019, 2003
djce
Right, I must prepare for work now. Catch you later!
2003-03-31 09040, 2003
djce has quit
2003-03-31 09006, 2003
phidauex
but maybe if there was a way to numerically indicate that the moderation "Bangin in london disk four" was similar to "Bangin' in London (disk 4)"
there's just one thing: The build system seems to be broken or incomplete in 2.0.1.
2003-03-31 09046, 2003
yalaforge
I have to run autogen.sh to make it compile.
2003-03-31 09044, 2003
yalaforge
Perhaps that's a problem with my (NetBSD) system.
2003-03-31 09008, 2003
yalaforge
The maintainer seems to use outdated libtool and autoconf/automake.
2003-03-31 09024, 2003
phidauex
thats a possibility
2003-03-31 09049, 2003
phidauex
i had to use a modified autogen.sh script so it would compile on OS X
2003-03-31 09059, 2003
phidauex
and even so, it was quite the trial
2003-03-31 09048, 2003
yalaforge
What did you have to change?
2003-03-31 09035, 2003
phidauex
well, apple uses their own libtool and automake that isn't always compatible with the gnu versions, so I had to modify it to use 'glibtool' and 'glibtoolize' which apple calls the gnu versions
2003-03-31 09058, 2003
phidauex
the changes have been submitted, so future versions will include a better autogen
