allmusic has the latest album under her old name, though it was released under the new one.
      • tma
it would seem that the latter usage is what she would prefer to be known as, if she has started using that exclusively
      • so that version should be the primary name for the artist, and the old usage should be an alias
      • somniloquy
K, I'll see if I can set it up like that...
      • `Sel joined the channel
      • `Sel
anybody been to that pyschoexgirlfriend site?
      • it's down now
      • and I can't find my folder of the voicemails
      • tma
`Sel: er, what the hell are you talking about?
      • `Sel
      • there were voicemails
      • andyg
        hehe I remember that
      • tma
what's that got to do with MusicBrainz?
      • `Sel
        anyone got the voicemails saved?
      • I dunno, this is the only music channel I could find
      • I thought maybe you trade music
      • andyg
        lol
      • somniloquy
        Haha.
      • tma
        no, we don't
      • andyg
you won't find that kind of channel on freenode I bet
      • better off going to efnet/undernet/etc
      • `Sel
        k thanks
      • `Sel has quit
      • somniloquy
Doesn't really sound like 'music' that he wanted, anyway.
      • tma
        psh
      • andyg
although that's not exactly illegal music.. wonder if voicemail recordings can be shared like that without consent
      • tma
        it depends on the country
      • and there'd be an argument that if you know you're being recorded (ie: voicemail implies this) then the person who recorded it can do whatever they like with it
      • but that also depends on the laws in the country in question
      • andyg
        true
      • tma
      • just finished it
      • andyg
        awesome
      • somniloquy
        Heh, "special shape".
      • tma
        ?
      • somniloquy
Just a bit odd for an album attribute.
      • tma
well, some limited edition versions of LPs and CDs are cut into a special shape
      • somniloquy
Yeah, I've seen one, maybe two.
      • tma
they aren't very common, but I thought it was valid meta-data
      • andyg
do we also need "release data-set" for info such as UPC/EAN/ASIN
      • somniloquy
        Yep.
      • andyg
        metadata about the release
      • tma
        andyg: yes, good point
      • andyg
        however...
      • I was imagining a release as being like a 2-cd album, not as broad as you defined it like having all versions of a single under 1 release
      • in that case, you'd have multiple ASIN/UPC/EAN values
      • tma
yes, as stated in the problems area, there will be a lot of redundancy
      • the way you imagine the "release" is closer to the "Sets" part of the proposal
      • andyg
        ah ok
      • you've put a lot more thought into it than I have :)
      • tma
so a Release can be a Set which has the two discs in it
      • well, I was trying to cover a lot of bases :)
      • andyg
        yeah it looks good
      • ok I gotta go :)
      • tma
it still needs some ironing out, of course, then there's the implementation
      • ok

      • musicbrainz appears to be down
      • yup
      • apache on zim isn't responding
      • tma wonders what he should do when things like this happen
      • tma is away: shopping
      • somniloquy
        I am now.
      • Heh. He goes shopping and now MB is working.

      • yalaforge
        change to super user
      • somniloquy
        Hehe, nice.
      • yalaforge wanted to restart his apache
      • tma is back (gone 01:14:07)
      • tma
somniloquy: I just wanted to check how far you'd got with Guess.js
      • now that I've resolved my segfault problem and have a fully working test server
      • yalaforge
        congratulations :-)
      • somniloquy
tma, um... I made it handle hyphens correctly, make some non-English words lowercase, and handle '.' as it does ',' stopping it putting spaces in the middle of numbers such as 100,000 in the process.
      • tma
I also worked out how to track down the segfaults too :)
      • somniloquy: ok .. I gather you sent a copy of the update to Dave? I'll have to wait for him to check it into cvs
      • somniloquy
        Yep.
      • tma
yalaforge: did you see my ReleaseGroups thing?
      • yalaforge
yes, but I didn't have the time to read it yet
      • I'm struggling with adding moderations for the wiki stuff
      • I've got my own little ideas about making artists with the same names unique BTW
      • tma
ahh ok. you might want to read Don Redman's response on that thread if you haven't already
      • yalaforge: oh yes?
      • yalaforge
yup. basically split artists up in persons and groups
      • for persons, we store a birth/death date + location
      • the same for groups (founding/dissolving date)
      • tma
yep .. that sounds like a step towards AdvancedRelationships too
      • yalaforge
persons can be grouped into groups. one person can belong to one or more groups
      • tma
can you work artist a + artist b collaborations into that?
      • somniloquy
        That would be nice.
      • yalaforge
well, I thought collaborations where AR stuff ;-)
      • I've got the UML design here but didn't have the time to create a picture of it
      • as soon as I have it, I'll tell you
      • tma
if that little puzzle could be solved then the only real outstanding style issue will be how to deal with mash-ups or single tracks which contain two different tracks by two different artists
      • yalaforge
yes. but first is wiki annotations :-)
      • tma
        yes :)
      • Don made some good points _against* wiki style annotations as proposed, in case you didn't see it
      • yalaforge
        I read it
      • well, you can't please everyone
      • djce joined the channel
      • good morning
      • djce
        hi
      • Forgive any technical troubles I have today. I'm tinkering with my network, firewall etc.
      • tma
ok .. I just thought it might be wise to see if we can reach a consensus before going and spending time coding it up
      • djce
so expect odd things to happen :-)
      • tma
dave, you're turning into a penguin. stop it.
      • yalaforge experienced enough odd things on his own machine already
      • (hitchhikers reference, never mind)
      • somniloquy
        Haha.
      • djce
        I got it :-)
      • tma
djce: now, I was going to ask you something .. guess what it is I can't remember?
      • djce: I solved that segfault problem
      • djce
        Ah! great.
      • what was it?
      • tma
there was something wrong with the DBD:Pg perl module
      • djce
Any idea what kind of something?
      • tma
I uninstalled the Gentoo version and installed it again via CPAN
      • no, not really
      • djce
oh well, never mind. At least it works!
      • tma
might have just been compiled in the wrong order or something, or Gentoo's version is kaputz
      • I worked out how to track down segfaults to the exact module too
      • which I thought was neat. :)
      • djce
good going. Is it simple enough to share?
      • that sounds like a very useful skill :-)
      • tma
it was very easy, actually. you just need a working gdb, attach it to one of the running apache processes, and cause the segfault. the output in gdb tells you which perl module it carked in
      • strace wasn't terribly useful for that I found
      • djce
        cool. sounds useful.
      • tma
        grrr
      • 'giginger' is annoying me
      • he's entering a bunch of albums as official when they're bootlegs, and he's entered "Still" by NIN which is already in the database about three times

      • tma
        djce: excellent!
      • djce
and it does mails to mb-automods
