i don't know if this is analagous or not
      • 2006-06-01 15253, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
but people might say of wendy carlos' music, "that's not X" where X is whatever composer she happens to be performing

i'd be inclined to put the tracks under the composer if you think the composer's contribution is significant enough to put the composer in the title of the tracks
      • 2006-06-01 15208, 2006

      • ojnkpjg

@mingvase: don't know what orbit did, but Loussier reworks Bach (and other classicol composer) 's music
      • 2006-06-01 15213, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
that whole extra week of sudden death makes no sense at all to me, btw

so that it gets a new original content
      • 2006-06-01 15245, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
mll, so if you wanted to add ARs, what would bach's role be?
      • 2006-06-01 15206, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
would you list him as one composer and loussier as another composer?
      • 2006-06-01 15213, 2006

      • mll
        why not

i don't like to put stuff in the title unless it's actually part of the title

      • 2006-06-01 15208, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
        well, sure, for that one
      • 2006-06-01 15229, 2006

      • mll
and generally, ther's something about the _original_ composer
      • 2006-06-01 15245, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
do we need some kind of AR to convey that kind of info?
      • 2006-06-01 15204, 2006

      • Shepard
I've thought about "uses composition samples"
      • 2006-06-01 15206, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
        or should we use dates
      • 2006-06-01 15207, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
        or what?
      • 2006-06-01 15210, 2006

      • Shepard
        similar to sound samples
      • 2006-06-01 15216, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
        classical remixes
      • 2006-06-01 15227, 2006

      • Shepard
but that's not quite the case here..

i know, i was being silly
      • 2006-06-01 15240, 2006

      • Shepard
        I mean samples
      • 2006-06-01 15255, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
        oh
      • 2006-06-01 15203, 2006

      • Shepard
samples would be more when someone uses a short part of a compisition in his song
      • 2006-06-01 15210, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
i don't know, i'd almost want to call it a "rework" or something
      • 2006-06-01 15210, 2006

      • Shepard
this here is a rework of a composition
      • 2006-06-01 15220, 2006

      • MingVase
compare with this http://musicbrainz.org/album/d744cca0-6f43-4855-a… (I should go see if the local CD-store has a copy, it would be interesting to see what the other tracks are like...)
      • 2006-06-01 15212, 2006

      • MingVase _thinks_ this is more or less an equivalent thing, anyway.
      • 2006-06-01 15215, 2006

      • MingVase
MingVase is now known as MartinRudat

You can go & listen to extracts at http://www.loussier.com/pages/discographie.cfm to hear for yourselves if you don't know Loussier, and compare with the original works
      • 2006-06-01 15224, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
do we have some kind of "was the source material for" AR?
      • 2006-06-01 15241, 2006

      • Shepard
        only for sound samples :/
      • 2006-06-01 15243, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
mll, i'm not disagreeing with you on those mods, i'm just wondering how we should handle albums like these
      • 2006-06-01 15202, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
because there is information about them we currently can't represent, i think
      • 2006-06-01 15210, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
        other than in an annotation
      • 2006-06-01 15212, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
        and that's cheating

      • 2006-06-01 15254, 2006

Mingvase: on http://musicbrainz.org/album/d744cca0-6f43-4855-a…, what gets in "artist" tag with picard ?
      • 2006-06-01 15204, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
      • 2006-06-01 15211, 2006

      • MartinRudat
mII: umm... I dunno? I don't use picard (or have that release), but the first track made it fairly high in the charts, and (given I've not heard the original) seems to be a re-interpretation of barber's adagio for strings, rather than a performance.
      • 2006-06-01 15257, 2006

      • MartinRudat
I think that it would probably have the artist for the track written to the artist tag, though.
      • 2006-06-01 15227, 2006

      • mll
I'd hate to have my Loussier tracks under the Bach folder...
      • 2006-06-01 15205, 2006

      • mll
When people by a Loussier CD, they don't buy some Bach interpretation. They buy a Loussier CD. obviously :)
      • 2006-06-01 15208, 2006

      • MartinRudat
I've got my music arranged Release Artist/Release/trackumber (possible track artist) - trackname
      • 2006-06-01 15200, 2006

      • mll
I thinc Picard doesn't allow for this
      • 2006-06-01 15209, 2006

        we have %albumartist now
      • 2006-06-01 15219, 2006

      • mll
beacause it writes no "release artist" tag
      • 2006-06-01 15227, 2006

      • mll
        really ?
      • 2006-06-01 15231, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
        yes
      • 2006-06-01 15241, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
you could attribute the tracks to X and the album to Y
      • 2006-06-01 15249, 2006

      • mll
only when track artist != album artist ?
      • 2006-06-01 15205, 2006

      • MartinRudat
I'd've thought that it would write a release artist tag, or at the very least the mbid for the release artist...
      • 2006-06-01 15211, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
        %albumartist works all the time
      • 2006-06-01 15207, 2006

how do i set album artist?
      • 2006-06-01 15241, 2006

      • mll
Technically, that'd be OK for me, but I still think Loussier did further than just perform
      • 2006-06-01 15257, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
flamingcow, you have to move the album to the album artist, and tell it not to move the tracks to the artist
      • 2006-06-01 15205, 2006

      • flamingcow
        ah, ok

      • 2006-06-01 15230, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
        "rework" :P

that's the best i can think of right now
      • 2006-06-01 15211, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
        "rework" is pretty nebulous, though
      • 2006-06-01 15200, 2006

      • ojnkpjg
but i agree we need some new AR role for it

        again: "got inspired by"
      • 2006-06-01 15211, 2006

mII: that's even more nebulous than "rework"...
      • 2006-06-01 15248, 2006

      • nikki_ points out to martin that those are lowercase 'L's, not capital 'i's

if this was techno, we could use 'remix', more or less, I'd think...

      • ojnkpjg
nikki, which font do you use?
      • 2006-06-01 15219, 2006

      • nikki_ likes dejavu sans mono more because it comes with way more glyphs than bitstream vera (it started out as bitstream vera though)
