looks like the LP was tuff gong too, but i'd love to take a look at my copy of the LP.
yllona notes that marley was never one of my favorites though ;)
jellyfish
yeah, the 79 was probably tuff gong... i just never know what to do with a re-release (with extra track) by the company that bought the company that bought the label that bought the company that bought the label ... etc
yllona
jellyfish: take a look at the copy that you own (if you can find it). that's the release you're editing (i hope)
srotta
... and then play "pick-a-label" 8)
yllona
if not, a quick phone call to your public library can resolve the issuee
give'em a quick call. survival should be in most collections. also your library system may be searchable on line
jellyfish
but honestly, it's just annoying that i know the release date (exact day) cat# UPC/EAN format... just not the label!
(but i'll shut up about it now)
yllona
BrianFreud: i'm not a big fan of the "crowd sourcing" phenomenon
BrianFreud
true, but this looks useful... "22. Survival - Bob Marley & the Wailers (1979 Island Records LP: ILPS 9542), recorded at Tuff Gong, Kingston, JA, produced by Bob Marley & the Wailers and Alex Sadkin "
yllona
jellyfish: if you've got all that info, then it will be quite easy to resolve. use the library
jellyfish
yeah
yllona
BrianFreud: yesh, taht is useful, and what i remember -- as just being Island in teh US. but find out if the goog group poster is referring to US release first. bob & the wailer were *huge* stars long before their msuic crossed the pond
i think their first big album hit in the carribean & africa as early as '73 / '74
i can send e-mail to one of my jamaican girlfriends, she also slighly older than I. so she'd know for sure
*older than me. sorry
cooperaa shakes his finger at BrianFreud's lack of GC

BrianFreud
lol
cooperaa
you'll get my nasty note in a minute ;)
BrianFreud
hehe
yllona
BrianFreud: the goog group poster is in europe somewhere, ergo would have entirely diff releases than even the UK. jellyfish will have the closest to the original carib releases
BrianFreud
sounds good - I just looked to see if he still exists... last post was in 94, so pretty definate he's not going to reply at that email.

BrianFreud: yep. that's good bet
cooperaa
BrianFreud: !!!! another no GC?!
yllona
the post from '93 was prb'ly imported from usenet...
cooperaa slaps BrianFreud
BrianFreud
see note :P
yllona
goog acquired the usenet archives back in '99 IIRC. my usenet id is dead too from the early days
BrianFreud
wierd - mine is very incomplete, but I can find myself back into the 80's
yllona
BrianFreud: when goog acquired usenet you had the option of removing posts... that's waht i did
BrianFreud
ah... I find my old posts good for a laugh every so often :P

drsaunde: there are two classic stevie wonder tunes on nationally syndicated TV commercials now.
and now that george clinton has finally won back the right to all the classic parliament/funkadelic tunes, we now have p-funk in toyota commercials
kinda cool if you ask me :)
BrianFreud
reminds me of that fit the guy playing themain char in The Doors movie throws when they used "Light My Fire" in an ad
drsaunde
yeah....i'm not too upset...only that deceptacon is one of my favorite suprise the room/rock the room tunes
i don't want somebody saying to me they know the song from the Nivea commercial :-)
yllona
drsaunde: there are agencies that specialize in finding music for commercials, it's actually "big business"
drsaunde
yeah...i wish i could be hooked up with a job like that
yllona
if you watch film/TV credits, that's the role of the "music supervisor"
drsaunde
i'm kind of on the fence...but I have considered putting trackspotting like this in track annotations
yllona
drsuande: non-celebrity music supervisors typically require quite a bit of "real" music experience -- should be able to read/write a musical score, have a good background in music history (like a graduate degree in musicology, or library science) and a hardcore background in music licensing wouldn't hurt either
drsaunde: i think the trackspotting is a great idea...
ascap.com can be helpful there as it lists commercial uses for a particular track
drsaunde
i have a great talent for picking out tracks from commercials/tv etc... :-) maybe i will start adding annotations
yllona
i use annotations quite a bit for useful trivia :)
drsaunde
and to further the commercials point...I'm actually looking forward to a track because of a commercial (The Donnas cover of "Safety Dance..not released yet but all over the commercials)
yllona
so there's a TV advert for marriot hotels that has licensed one of my fave (and obscure) dinah washington tracks
drsaunde
nice
BrianFreud
something like a "used in tv show/movie x"?
wouldn't we have to have TV shows and movie listed then?
yllona
the track is "relax max" used for doubletree hotels from the album "swingin' with miss "D", 1956
BrianFreud
oh, sorry, missed the comment about annotation :P
I'm so enjoying my new find in release entry... I found the option yllona
drsaunde
that's some nice trackspotting...you should add that...track annotation :-)
BrianFreud
very hidden, very useful :)
yllona
eventually an AR would be nice, but we need a better source for authentication
drsaunde
still..we could start a trend here
BrianFreud
well, eventually, we could use the, what's it call, folksonamy? tag that ruoak wants
yllona
yeah, i'll ad that and a couple of others mentioned above... like the stevie wonder tracks
that's still pretty cool though...i didn't realize they posted liscenced cover versions
yllona
yes,
so you can see that it's being used in a mailbox etc (now owned by UPS) commercial
and you can see a partial list of all of the "covers"
ruaok pokes his head in
so on one evening i saw the UPS commercial several times while watching a basic bale version of a hit movie that featured the john legend "cover" of the same song as the title theme -- kinda wild....
*basic cable version of the movie "Hitch", sorry
drsaunde
yeah...i always find that quite cool to make discoveries like that
yllona
the commercial uses a "cover" tune also... and it gets better ... later that evening i saw another movie that used the original stevie version (1972)
i think the movie was "love potion no. 9" starring sandra bullock
drsaunde
john legend is good though so i'm not surprised
yllona
i like john legend, vocally he sounds an awful lot like stevie tho, he needs to settle into his own style
his covers of stevie tunes are terribly derivative of the originals... but he's also really young, so i'm hopeful :)
john legend wil have "arrived" when stevie writes an original track for him ;)
drsaunde
yeah..i'll concede that...covering someone you are close to emulating as it is ...isn't necessarily a good idea if your trying to carve out your own identity
:-)
maybe he'll bring him along....like Q-Tip
yllona
i love the track john legend did with sergio mendes
*mendez, rather
drsaunde
i saw him opening for The Roots...good show
yllona
drsaunde: while you're track spotting, look the track up on ascap/bmi... if you don't seee the advert listed, just drop a quick e-mail/phone call to the publisher listed... typically you'll get a response (rather promptly) in my experience
the roots will have "long legs" as producers, but perhaps not as perforrmers
drsaunde
i disagree about that...as far as hip-hop goes...nobody can match their shows
yllona
oh yes, they are *very* good performers, but the band seems to have alot of "personnel issues" ;)
drsaunde
yeah...true that
yllona
drsaunde: since you seem to follow rap/hip-hop also check sesac (sesac.com) which is a relative newcomer to the licensing/ publishing biz
sesac is attracting a fair amount of the hip-hop artists... you'll need o see what's waht. i don't follow hip-hop that closely
and i don't think the sesac DB is easily searchable online, tho they do answer e-mail queries
drsaunde: another good source... when you begin a search for hip-hop sampling is: http://www.the-breaks.com/
but aleay cross check with a legit source, these days *all* hip-hop albums should list sample credits.. wasn't always so. thus, the inordinate amount of litigation
drsaunde
ooh..that is cool though
yllona
one interesting note, the use of "live" musicians in recent hip-hop recordings... it can expensive than cross-licensing for samples... kinda funny from a circular point-of-view :-D
*can be less expensive, rather... (finally) bootlegging isn't cheap these days
thus the hip-hop artist will only have to gain clearances for composers.. not always cheap. but once you have live experienced studio musicians ... you can achieve/negotiate a composition "on the fly" -- and most successful hip-hip artists are better busisnessmen, rather than artist/musicians
