      • BrianG starts creating multiple accounts to boost ratings
      • yllona
FauxFaux: i agree on something local. but i could care less about what others think ;)
      • FauxFaux
Speaking of which, gah, die windows explorer.
      • ruaok is sorry he asked for feedback
      • BrianG
        don't be
      • yllona
it's my music, and if i didn't like it, it wouldn't be in my collection
      • BrianG
i think you got some good feedback
      • ruaok sends sharon private mail
      • gioele
ruaok: I fear that in the long run it will result in bad publicity...
      • ruaok
if it does, we turn it off.
      • simple.
      • yllona
frankly i don't see the point, but if it's just an experiment -- go for it.
      • ruaok
RATINGS ARE ONLY A MEANS TO THE END.
      • gioele
anyway, yes, as BrianG said, no offence to anyone working on these systems! It is a cool work that shows how powerful mb is becoming. It's just the PR side that worries me ;)
      • BrianG
        PRIMUS SUCKS WOO
      • yllona
ruaok: what's the end game then?
      • BrianG
        filtering
      • ruaok
        collaborative filtering
      • ruaok realizes that there is a huge amount of perception management on this and the tagging project
      • aCiD2
I honestly can't see how ratings can give a bad public image
      • I mean, you're encouraging community participation on yet another level, how is that bad?
      • yllona
oh, and why would collaborative filtering algorithms be necessary in MB?
      • BrianG
because MB isn't going to be all factual
      • yllona
        aCiD2: burn-out? :)
      • BrianG
        or something
      • aCiD2
        yllona: what do you mean?
      • ruaok
        yllona: necessary. not at all.
      • useful, yes.
      • warp currently has no opinion on the ratings, but can see uses for the tags.
      • by collaboraitve filtering you can break the DB into logical chunks.
      • aCiD2
BrianG: Sure, but it's not like we're deleting our factual data, and gonna start capitalising our "the"s in track titles or anything :P
      • ruaok
I want to edit on music I like and similar music.
      • yllona
ruaok: okay. perhaps you can explain it to me over a beer. i'm at loss for this one. carry on
      • ruaok
don't make me peer review the crap I don't know/like.
      • aCiD2
I'm with rob there, that's a major hurdle I hit when I wanted to start voting
      • BrianG
and for some reason i can't type in those artists i like :P
      • aCiD2
I was like, wtf - I can't speak japanese, how am I meant to rate that!?
      • ruaok nods
      • warp
ruaok: ah right. might be useful to some users, not to me.
      • ruaok
its one of the chief complains I've gotten from day one.
      • BrianG
aCiD2: yeah that could be cool
      • ruaok
and, really if you look at the goal of MB....
      • yllona
why not search for the artist you like & just subscribe?
      • ruaok
we're here to collect information about music.
      • warp
ruaok: i always just voted/edited my subscriptions, and not much else :)
      • gioele
ruaok: can't you get the data from last.fm recommended/similar artists?
      • yllona
        i'm still not getting it.
      • ruaok
and how the entities we have relate to one another is an important aspect of that.
      • gioele: no, last.fm doesn't share data.
      • yllona
user ratings are useless for that type of data
      • just take alook at the last.fm global tag "jazz".
      • ruaok
yllona: never mind. we'll talk over a beer.
      • warp
        :D
      • gioele
ruaok: contracts, lawyers... all that stuff? 8)
      • ruaok
        more like competitive advantage.
      • aCiD2
yllona: well, I'm subscribed to about 200 artists, but I still hardly get to peer review, because my musical taste is apparently pretty niche
      • ruaok
RJ promised data sharing many years ago.
      • aCiD2
I get some stuff, but nothing much
      • ruaok
but since money has come into last.fm that idea went out the window.
      • gioele
        screen scraping forever!
      • ruaok
I guess thats why he hasn't looked me in the eye in 3 years.
      • yllona
aCiD2: i'm in the same boat. but i've found like-minded folk. dmmpanda, for one. he' sawesome
      • warp
        ruaok: :/
      • ruaok: well, atleast they'll be a paying customer soonish, right? :)
      • ruaok
        hopefully.
      • but they will never be a data partner.
      • so, if this type of data isn't out there, who is going to make it avalabile in a trusted manner?
      • warp doesn't scrobble a thing until they implemented the MB data feed.
      • gioele
ruaok: there we go, time for a new _free_ last.fm (with tags, ratings, whatever) under the Musicbrainz foundation?
      • yllona goes very quiet :P
      • ruaok
gioele: no that is certainly not what we're about.
      • I don't want to stream music/videos.
      • let the last.fm boys deal with that.
      • I want good data about music.
      • factual and non factual. it just has to work.
      • and I am willing to try and fail.
      • and if ratings fail, then so be it.
      • aCiD2 doesn't use the music streaming functionality of last.fm, or the tagging - I just do it to see what my friends like listening to
      • aCiD2
and get recommendations on what I might like
      • warp goes back to coding his tagger for another 30 minutes or so.
      • gioele does like aCiD2
      • so if MB is trying to give me just this information, and not a lot more - I'm sure it's gonna be done well!
      • ha
      • gioele
ruaok: ok, then what about renaming "rate this artist", that sounds like "I give you this mark", to "I like this artist 5/10"
      • ruaok
gioele: ahh, now that is useful feedback. :)
      • gioele
You are getting the same data, but you're showing it in a different way
      • ruaok
nomenclature is very important. and we haven't nailed this yet.
      • sharon just put the VERY first version of this together.
      • Sharon
        ruaok: okay
      • ruaok
Sharon: look for an email in a few minutes.
      • for the actual rating process, do you guys like the drop down or would you prefer to see radio buttons?
      • BrianG
        one click ratings
      • aCiD2
I'd prefer a list of stars are something
      • and I click the star I want
      • gioele
ruaok: one of those imdb-like stars?
      • BrianG
i'd prefer a list of LOLcats
      • aCiD2
Also, inlined with the release page, and submitted via ajax
      • BrianG: Careful, you'll set Muz off
      • :P
      • warp
ruaok: familiar with the ebay feedback rating interface?
      • yllona
ah gawd no, not the stars :(
      • ruaok wants stars too
      • aCiD2
        yllona: Why?
      • ruaok
yllona: just turn the feature off and you don;'t have to look at it.
      • aCiD2
I find them very intuitive, and it only takes one click and it's all done
      • yllona
        ruaok: okay. will do.
      • BrianG
        people are made of stars
      • aCiD2
        no click, click to submit
      • BrianG
        no submit
      • just click
      • :)
      • er what you said
      • aCiD2
        ha
      • warp
gioele: sounds like the imdb stars are similar to the ebay feedback stars.
      • gioele
      • aCiD2
But I really do think it needs to be inlined
      • warp
could use a nice keyboard interface though. not everyone likes mice.
      • aCiD2
gioele: That doesn't look like it uses radio fields in the background
      • Imo, it needs to have an accessible backend - and I vote for a set of radio fields stylied into stars with CSS
      • aCiD2 doesn't mind coding that if no one else wants to :P
      • BrianG
i'm not going to rate things if i have to click a lot
      • aCiD2
        exactly
      • that's why I think it needs to be inlined too
      • yllona
okay, my last thought on the subject. why not use the amzn recommendation engine (it's in the API) -- and generate some much needed revenue
      • ruaok
aCiD2: if you'd like to code a star system I'd LOVE YOU!
      • gioele
what about this http://komodomedia.com/blog/index.php/2006/01/0... with radio instead of <li>?
      • aCiD2
        haha
      • ruaok
(and forgive the chocolate you owe me. :) )
      • aCiD2
        I can't choose rob!
      • gioele - that's a good one, I've used it before
      • ruaok
        aCiD2: then get hacking. :)
      • yllona
aCiD2: please look at the amzzn mturk or ECS API first. no need to re-invent the wheel
      • aCiD2
        :)
      • yllona: ok
      • ECS?
      • I'll just finish some changes to make Aaron happy
      • yllona
mturk would be an incredible fit for this, actually
      • ECS == ecommerce services
      • one sec & i'll get the mturk link for you. it's good stuff
      • aCiD2
        thanks
      • yllona
      • aCiD2: mturk is set up as a "for fee" service, but it's not a requirement. read it thru and you'll what's what :)
      • FauxFaux
Get your folder script working,a cnakibfnm?
      • Um, aCiD2.
      • aCiD2
        rofl
      • no
      • cause my postgres doesn't like "Create View"
      • FauxFaux
I reserve the right to not be able to type.
      • aCiD2
if you can open your db, I can finish it :)
      • so yllona, mturk is a massive marketplace api?
