I use it occasionally, when I think there's a chance it'll be quicker to find the cd via. it when there's no cdtoc.

i'm not good with drag&drop, partly because my browser and picard tend to live on different (virtual) desktops.

Hypotethical situation: artist releases album prior to existance of CDs. Years later, they do release a CD using the exact original recordings. Release gets into musicbrainz database. One MB user promptly (and correctly) fills in the CD release, including its year. As expected, noone would commit a LP / tape release
      • 2007-09-14 25741, 2007

      • brianfreud
assuming the LP/tape was track, track-time, and master identical, it happens all the time... not sure I get what you're saying
      • 2007-09-14 25715, 2007

      • xlotlu
brianfreud: in the end, MB tagger client fetches data, and as expected gets the year of the CD release for the album, not the year of the actual release -- which i find rather incorrect
      • 2007-09-14 25723, 2007

      • hawke
        yeah
      • 2007-09-14 25730, 2007

      • hawke
the correct thing is to add the vinyl release
      • 2007-09-14 25738, 2007

      • xlotlu
and well, it's not that hypotethical :)
      • 2007-09-14 25712, 2007

      • brianfreud
well, the tagger can only give what info is in the db
      • 2007-09-14 25724, 2007

      • brianfreud
so if the db only has the CD event, that's the info it's reporting back
      • 2007-09-14 25702, 2007

      • xlotlu
brianfreud: that's obvious. what i'm asking is if it *actually* is a good approach to tag the tracks with the release date
      • 2007-09-14 25754, 2007

      • xlotlu
end user doesn't actually cares about releases, especially when they're identical copies, but about the year of that album...
      • 2007-09-14 25723, 2007

      • brianfreud
lol, you;'d be surprised - I've seenthat question often enough where people want the data to somehow still be there :P

      • 2007-09-14 25706, 2007

      • Jugdish
the tagger retrieves the earliest release year, so just add the vinyl/cassette release event and that's the year that will get tagged for the album
      • 2007-09-14 25723, 2007

      • brianfreud

Right now, you have a release rowid which has an artist rowid attached. You're just adding now multiple artist rowids, with a check when that release is accessed to pull all those artist rowids, rather than just the one
