hi, why does picard give my multi-disc albums different album id's for each disc?... this doesn't seem logical, and it's not playing nicely with my player
2007-10-18 29122, 2007
jerbear
anyone?
2007-10-18 29154, 2007

Different discs are different releases, jerbear, live with it. :)
2007-10-18 29129, 2007
FauxFaux
There's a whole load of cases where the merge doesn't make sense, too, I have a list of them, but my database server is screwed right now, so you can't marvel at it.
2007-10-18 29143, 2007
jerbear
what is a release, then? shouldn't it be called "release id"?
2007-10-18 29112, 2007
FauxFaux
The words are used rather randomly! Read the wiki page on NGS.

Perhaps http://tinyurl.com/39e75b would work as well (assuming I did the "advanced query" correctly)

anyone here?

2007-10-18 29102, 2007
AlsMe
ohh great! well, I'm looking all over the place for lossless audio
2007-10-18 29133, 2007
AlsMe
and I can't seem to find anything, I'm wondering if you just download normal mp3's or go for the good stuff?
2007-10-18 29145, 2007
AlsMe
(flac, wma) lossless audio
2007-10-18 29114, 2007
FauxFaux
You want us to tell you how not to suck a pirating music? Or you want shops that sell music for download?
2007-10-18 29152, 2007
AlsMe
I'm looking for website-reasonably priced
2007-10-18 29113, 2007
AlsMe
where the money goes to the artist
2007-10-18 29123, 2007
AlsMe
but the key thing is that I need it lossless
2007-10-18 29130, 2007
FauxFaux
I don't believe any major stores sell flac, probably easier to buy the cds and rip it yourself.

well because the thing with a cd is that there's usually a few songs that you don't like on it
2007-10-18 29159, 2007
AlsMe
so if that's why I like individual song purchases
2007-10-18 29115, 2007

so that's why*... how do you normally get ur lossless audio?
2007-10-18 29158, 2007

I buy cds. <3

bleep sells flac
2007-10-18 29156, 2007
ojnkpjg
not for everything, but it's there for a bunch of albums
2007-10-18 29101, 2007
AlsMe
ohh great to hear
2007-10-18 29104, 2007
AlsMe
because I just picked up my first flac file today
2007-10-18 29120, 2007
FauxFaux
Bleep's average track price with mp3s means I could buy two tracks or a double-cd from amazon marketplace. :|
2007-10-18 29122, 2007
AlsMe
and the difference is incredible between that and a 128-256kbps audio file
2007-10-18 29149, 2007
AlsMe
maybe used music cd's off amazon are the way to go then
2007-10-18 29101, 2007
ojnkpjg
depends on what you're buying, i guess
2007-10-18 29106, 2007

Mp3 really isn't that bad unless it was encoded by a drunk monkey.
2007-10-18 29116, 2007

I just find it's such a waste of material if you only store the song digitally, just personal prefference tho

I'm talking about with a cd case*
2007-10-18 29133, 2007
ojnkpjg
bleep does have flac for some releases that are vinyl-only that are encoded from the masters
2007-10-18 29136, 2007
ojnkpjg
which is awfully convenient
2007-10-18 29146, 2007

it has something called sample rate
2007-10-18 29134, 2007

and I'm confused as to what it does
2007-10-18 29152, 2007
AlsMe
do you guys have any clue? sorry for sounding like a noob here
2007-10-18 29112, 2007
ojnkpjg
speeds up/slows down the playback, i'd guess?
2007-10-18 29122, 2007
ojnkpjg
if it lets you adjust it
2007-10-18 29134, 2007
AlsMe
I can set the sample rate to 32,000 or 44,000
2007-10-18 29140, 2007
ojnkpjg
oh
2007-10-18 29149, 2007
ojnkpjg
44100 is what cd audio uses
2007-10-18 29103, 2007
ojnkpjg
don't know what uses 32000
2007-10-18 29112, 2007
AlsMe
48,000 or 88,000 or 96,000
2007-10-18 29134, 2007
AlsMe
alright so I guess I don't really need to change it from 44,000
2007-10-18 29142, 2007
ojnkpjg
not if you're playing cd audio
2007-10-18 29115, 2007

2007-10-18 29123, 2007
AlsMe
it's just not the same anymore, with my new headphones (Sennheiser hd 485)
2007-10-18 29141, 2007
AlsMe
what do you normally listen to your audio through?
2007-10-18 29120, 2007
FauxFaux has some nice sennheissers, but still fails abysmally at abx testes at anything over about 192k mp3.
It's basically, can you tell the difference without cheating.
2007-10-18 29148, 2007
AlsMe
yes I can
2007-10-18 29100, 2007

it depends on what your amp can produce tho
2007-10-18 29109, 2007

2007-10-18 29129, 2007

AlsMe
I hear the sound of heaven
2007-10-18 29138, 2007
brianfreud
I can, even on crappy speakers, but only up to about 280 (or V0). 320 or lossless is a waste of space to me
2007-10-18 29143, 2007
FauxFaux
I think the fact that I refuse to listen to anything with those nasty instruments that have, like, bits of string in them probably helps.
2007-10-18 29144, 2007
AlsMe
lol.. every song sounds difference now
2007-10-18 29102, 2007
AlsMe
320 is perfect for me
2007-10-18 29108, 2007
brianfreud
320 cbr?
2007-10-18 29117, 2007
AlsMe
maybe it's because I'm young and my eyes are still able to pick up all those sounds
2007-10-18 29117, 2007
FauxFaux
Eeew cbr.
2007-10-18 29117, 2007
ojnkpjg
i got a pair of sennheiser hd 590s and i can hear the difference between 320cbr and lossless for some stuff
2007-10-18 29135, 2007
AlsMe
and try the hd 485's
2007-10-18 29136, 2007
FauxFaux
Listen to music that consists of sine-waves, dammit. >.<
2007-10-18 29137, 2007
brianfreud
run mp3packer on any 320 cbr file - you'll find it's really the identical audio to about a 280 to 292 vbr file.
2007-10-18 29147, 2007
brianfreud
just more wastefully encoded
2007-10-18 29106, 2007
brianfreud
and 280-292 = V0 (abx)
2007-10-18 29112, 2007
brianfreud
apx, I mean
2007-10-18 29108, 2007
FauxFaux
One of my, like, top five tracks of all time is something like 14kbps on disc, trackers ftw.
2007-10-18 29112, 2007
brianfreud
sole exception is some rare opera and classical, which comes out around 305 - but that's also the same result you get with a V0 preset :P
2007-10-18 29127, 2007
FauxFaux
Eeew, strings!
2007-10-18 29133, 2007
brianfreud
oboe :D
2007-10-18 29142, 2007
FauxFaux

2007-10-18 29133, 2007

lol
2007-10-18 29140, 2007

I'm trying to remember what that program that generates graphs of where the bits were going in ogg files was, 'cos they were pretty.
2007-10-18 29123, 2007
brianfreud
even I have my exceptions tho... lol. All Mozart I have gets encoded as vorbis -q0, which is massive overkill at ~500 vbr bitrate :P
2007-10-18 29106, 2007
AlsMe
true man
2007-10-18 29138, 2007
FauxFaux wonders where the script to generate http://faux.uwcs.co.uk/music_quality_report.html went.
2007-10-18 29102, 2007
AlsMe
I got my sennheiser headphones yesterday, and people were telling me that I've gotta get through the break-in period
2007-10-18 29114, 2007
AlsMe
what does that possibly mean? and why is that useful?
2007-10-18 29132, 2007
FauxFaux
Spaceships!
2007-10-18 29102, 2007
brianfreud
seriously though AlsMe, if you're encoding everything at 320 cbr, run mp3packer on the lot. In normal mode, you'll end up with about 10% more free space, at 0 quality loss - in extremely slow mode (where it does *everything* to repack), you'll get 15% to 20% of the total space back, all without a bit's worth of quality being lost
2007-10-18 29126, 2007
AlsMe
alright thanks
2007-10-18 29136, 2007
ojnkpjg
disk space is cheaper these days than the time it takes to rip something twice
2007-10-18 29144, 2007
ojnkpjg
so why not just rip it losslessly and be done with it forever
2007-10-18 29150, 2007
ojnkpjg
or until your disks die on you
2007-10-18 29109, 2007
AlsMe
yea, because I'm putting together a 4TB file server
2007-10-18 29115, 2007
AlsMe
so I may just keep it lossless
2007-10-18 29119, 2007
FauxFaux
You clearly have too much money. :p
2007-10-18 29129, 2007
AlsMe
or I'm a serious computer nerds lol
2007-10-18 29135, 2007
brianfreud
I would rather rip to the limits of my ability to hear the difference - and I can hear far outside the "normal" frequency range for most people....
2007-10-18 29147, 2007
FauxFaux
The guy who lives upstairs rips flac, vorbis-3 /and/ mp3-192kcbr, now that's a good use of disk space. :p
2007-10-18 29151, 2007
AlsMe
drives are cheap these days anyways
2007-10-18 29118, 2007
brianfreud
at a certain point, in blind tests, no matter the song, lossless becomes indistinguishable to me - why waste the extra space, considering as I get older, my hearing will get worse, not better?
