hi, why does picard give my multi-disc albums different album id's for each disc?... this doesn't seem logical, and it's not playing nicely with my player

There's a whole load of cases where the merge doesn't make sense, too, I have a list of them, but my database server is screwed right now, so you can't marvel at it.

Bleep's average track price with mp3s means I could buy two tracks or a double-cd from amazon marketplace. :|
      • 2007-10-18 29122, 2007

      • AlsMe
and the difference is incredible between that and a 128-256kbps audio file

maybe used music cd's off amazon are the way to go then

        48,000 or 88,000 or 96,000
      • 2007-10-18 29134, 2007

      • AlsMe
alright so I guess I don't really need to change it from 44,000

I can, even on crappy speakers, but only up to about 280 (or V0). 320 or lossless is a waste of space to me
      • 2007-10-18 29143, 2007

      • FauxFaux
I think the fact that I refuse to listen to anything with those nasty instruments that have, like, bits of string in them probably helps.

      • 2007-10-18 29135, 2007

      • AlsMe
        and try the hd 485's

      • 2007-10-18 29137, 2007

      • brianfreud
run mp3packer on any 320 cbr file - you'll find it's really the identical audio to about a 280 to 292 vbr file.
      • 2007-10-18 29147, 2007

      • brianfreud
        just more wastefully encoded
      • 2007-10-18 29106, 2007

        and 280-292 = V0 (abx)

      • brianfreud
sole exception is some rare opera and classical, which comes out around 305 - but that's also the same result you get with a V0 preset :P

      • brianfreud
even I have my exceptions tho... lol. All Mozart I have gets encoded as vorbis -q0, which is massive overkill at ~500 vbr bitrate :P

      • brianfreud
seriously though AlsMe, if you're encoding everything at 320 cbr, run mp3packer on the lot. In normal mode, you'll end up with about 10% more free space, at 0 quality loss - in extremely slow mode (where it does *everything* to repack), you'll get 15% to 20% of the total space back, all without a bit's worth of quality being lost
      • 2007-10-18 29126, 2007

      • AlsMe
        alright thanks
      • 2007-10-18 29136, 2007

disk space is cheaper these days than the time it takes to rip something twice
      • 2007-10-18 29144, 2007

      • ojnkpjg
so why not just rip it losslessly and be done with it forever
