It's ugly... you have 2 different cases I think there though - a direct transcription, where you could just AR it (like track #2), and a transcription with modification, where the modification probably needs some indication in the track title (like track #1), but the transcriber could prob just be an AR

brianfreud: or create the new artists: "Beethoven / Alkan", "Chopin / Balakirev", "Bach / Busoni" etc.. :)

If you do an album merge will the track ARs on the old album transfer to the new album?

which IMO would be more accurate, but way uglier (and dumber for that fact..)
or maybe not. that would only work if there would be a centralized place for artist / works, bypassing the release-oriented structure
2007-11-27 33151, 2007
xlotlu
which would be nice, because you'd get standardised track naming, and link the tracks on releases to this one
2007-11-27 33154, 2007
brianfreud
I'd rather have a generic works list on the MB end than be linking to some tracklist outside of MB
2007-11-27 33142, 2007
xlotlu
brianfreud: that's what i meant
2007-11-27 33110, 2007
xlotlu
and you could link the track from the MB works list to the commons audio

but the MB works list would really be great -- instead of duplicating all the work on fixing track names across releases and styleguide compliance, it'd get done in one place

MClemo, I didn't get that joke... anyway, the dictionary says transcription=arrangement. I'd say it's often a very small arrangement, like playing a cello piece on the violin and just change octaves...

xlotlu, perhaps brianfreud & co. could help us sort this out: I think the transcriber-info shouldn't be in the title, just in an AR. Am I mis- or overinterpreting some rules here?
I spent some time today trying to get rid of Bach-Weiss today
2007-11-27 33150, 2007

hmmm, we actually already have 5 artists named God. So God would need a disambiguation note... Somehow, I find that ironic
2007-11-27 33107, 2007

this particular release goes as far as calling the composer Busoni, and calling the track "Chaconne transcription (after Bach)"

well, if it's a major reworking, but I wouldn't use the word "transcribed" for that - in my book it means leaving the music more or less intact
2007-11-27 33132, 2007
xlotlu
symphonick: what one would call "intact music" when transcribing from organ to piano is subjective
2007-11-27 33133, 2007
symphonick
a lot of musical terms are not clearly defined, though, so that's IMO
2007-11-27 33140, 2007
symphonick
:-) Yeah, try "not adding any music"?
2007-11-27 33143, 2007

symphonick: i'll make a transcription of a highly contrapunctal bach work for piano. i'll keep only the basic melody, one voice. would you call my composition bach's? :)

<symphonick> :-) Yeah, try "not adding any music"? <- ok, and a symphony transcribed for piano? Isn't there as much art in good subtracting as in good adding? :)
2007-11-27 33112, 2007
symphonick
brianfreud, I'd call that "arranging"?
2007-11-27 33108, 2007
brianfreud
*shrug* again I guess it comes down to quite what is or isn't changed
2007-11-27 33104, 2007
xlotlu
symphonick: i really don't think bach literally imagined how his chaconne would sound on harpsichord. so this all boils down to how much credit the "arranger" should take for his work
2007-11-27 33159, 2007
xlotlu
i chose to give credit in the track title, since many people seem to think it was very important work
2007-11-27 33143, 2007

symphonick: IM(h)O creating the "Bach / Busoni" artist would actually be more accurate, but the thought of that creeps me out :)
