yllona: I had an excellent book on loan from the library
but I took it back before I did anymore work (exam season is quickly approaching and I can't afford to spend my time entering ARs... need to study!)
yllona
cooperaa: 246 looks awesome. i just went to a lecture series at AMPAS on the same topic. good stuff
cooperaa
ya I can't wait for that one... I think I have it next winter
Citizen
cooperaa that's a lot...
cooperaa
Citizen: adds up to a music minor credit
yllona
cooperaa: try to squeeze in 261, if possible
cooperaa
ahh...
I think they switch that every year with Symphony so I might be able to take it next year
yllona
so much film music is derived from opera and musical theater
cooperaa
but I've had Der Ring des Nibelungen for over a year and haven't made it through yet...
yllona
cooperaa: it's a very dense work
cooperaa
in fact, I added it to iTunes on January 20, 2007...
Das Rheingold has several listens...
but I've hardly made a dent in Siegfried or Götterdämmerung
BrianFreudf
just to toss in a note, Mingus is quite cool in person too :)
yllona
yes, a very strange dude.

uh-oh. the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) are in a pissing match about the negotiations to pre-empt a potential strike, when the SAG contract expires on June 30
yllona notes that it's on like grey poupon!

BrianFreudf wonders how sympathetic audiences will be, coming so close after the writers strike
FauxFaux much prefers the Team America version. :)
BrianFreudf: and actor's strike is the big ugly. producers like spielberg and others have already cancelled *any* movie production that cannot complete filming by April
BrianFreudf
yeah, though what happened way back when, when the writer's guild was originally talking about waiting their strike until now, so they and SAG could strike together?
While I can understand SAG's disagreements, I think there's much less sympathy by the public now, having literally just waited through the entire writer's strike

yllona
yes, WGA and SAG were well aligned, but then the director's Guild (DGA) successfully negotiated in January, then WGA apprved contract in February -- with everyone expected to start work early march.
slaad joined the channel
then this contention between SAG/AFTRA, it's already march... to err of the safe side, why start filming only to have to stop in June? if a movie can finish filming in April -- great. otherwise it's bust.
it's not just movies either, several TV shows are at risk, simply because they didn't film an entire season before the WGA strike
BrianFreudf
yup. I think, though, at a certain point, it all becomes more and more moot... Even couch potatoes will stop planning for must see TV night, when it's just reruns
one of my drives just puked, so now I'm paranoid and wondering if it's possible to setup a software raid set with a blank drive (as the spare) and an existing drive/partition as the main
I guess I'm wondering if I can add an existing partition to a raid set without formatting it
ruaok
ick.
doesn't sound like a good idea to me.
what os?
cooperaa
os-x
ruaok
define 'puked'
cooperaa
umm I woke up this morning and my tv show drive was unmounted
I looked, and the drive was still connected but it said there was an error and it couldn't repair
now it doesn't see the partition
ruaok
so a physical drive is not responding?
cooperaa
no the drive appears to be fine now, but it is "blank"
ruaok
ok, raid is most certainly not the answer here.
cooperaa
well
ruaok
ugh.
does the SMART status in disk utility tell you anything?
cooperaa
the thing is, my music drive is fine, but I would be pretty upset if it ever croaked
SMART status: Not supported
ruaok
feh
Amblin joined the channel
cooperaa
so I want to setup a mirror of my music drive
ruaok
just get a backup drive and use timemachine
cooperaa
ruaok: excellent
any last-ditch ideas to restore the partition?
yllona
cooperaa: if the drive is firewire you can force the drive to mount, i'm sure what the process is in leopard. that way you can recover the files...
cooperaa
usb
yllona
oh, dunno then.
ruaok
how do you force mount a firewire drive?
yllona
are you able to run diagnostics on the drive at all? os x disk utilities
