        very cool.
      • ruaok
or rather, its in her queue post 4/15
      • yllona
        yeah, i hear you.
      • we live in interesting times....
      • ruaok
yep. the next couple of years will be challenging.
      • I think I need to change my tune from wanting to hire lots of people to "who the fuck can we survive this mess"?
      • s/who/how
      • I think reaching self sufficiency came in the nick of time.
      • yllona
one of my clients that does alot european & asian business, is still using dollars, because euros was too complex/expensive given the number of transactions
      • but they're at that awkward "mid-growth" stage
      • but i should check with them again on this issue
      • nikki scowls at the pound/euro graph
      • ojnkpjg
        hey, don't complain
      • check out the euro/dollar graph
      • nikki
but I'm not converting any euros into dollars
      • but I need to go get some euros for tomorrow, and the exchange rate just went splat
      • yllona
ruaok: i'll hook you up with my girl -- she saved my ass in 2000-2002 and again during my Mom's illness -- really good people and very fair. i was by no means her largest client (by a galactic margin) but she delivered me the same level of service
      • ojnkpjg
the dollar's been going splat for a while :P
      • nikki
        yeah, I know
      • ojnkpjg
it's so expensive to import music now
      • ruaok
nikki: got link for the pound/euro graph?
      • nikki
      • Aankhen`` has quit
      • ruaok
        wow.
      • nikki
that's the 5 year graph so it's more dramatic :P
      • ruaok
the pound is in serious trouble too, if I am reading this right.
      • nikki
but still, when I last converted some money late last year it was still over 1.40 euro per pound
      • it's still $2 to a pound though
      • yllona
yep. int'l finance is feeling the pain too. that was the point of my rant a few days ago
      • ruaok
maybe I should settle all my contracts in EUR now.
      • ruaok looks at last.fm
      • yllona
several british banks and hedge funds (especially) are in real trouble
      • nikki
yeah, my interest rates have dropped on all my accounts
      • and I can't get credit to save my life, but I think that's a different issue
      • yllona
        i'm watching japan also.
      • BrianFreud
ruaok: I would... right now, the dollar's seeming rather ruble-like
      • ruaok
well, I've been avoiding USD contracts.
      • but what I'm saying is that I should probably avoid GBP contracts too.
      • All hail the EURo.
      • yllona
nikki: no one here can get credit now... even the most pristine folks
      • zoke
the USD is in a cycle, it should drop for about a year or more and then it will slowly rise
      • ruaok
zoke: assuming the entire country doesn't self destruct.
      • zoke
it won't, people worry too much
      • nikki
yllona: well, I've had trouble for months, I think it's because I'm not on the electoral role at the same address as my bank account
      • yllona
ruaok: there's an election in november... nothing will happen until then, and the markets always rise post-election for at least 3-4 months
      • ruaok
        not if mccain't gets elected.
      • nikki
jesus. under 200 yen to a pound now, I remember when it used to be 180 and then all of a sudden it was around 225 and I was like "carry on! carry on!" because japanese cds are so bloody expensive
      • yllona
i disagree. i have to say this is the best set of candidates (on both sides of the fence) in decades
      • MBChatLogger
        Impeach GWB NOW!
      • ruaok
        mccain't == bush 2.0
      • yllona
ruaok: again i disagree mccain is much better than bush. and i'm not a republican
      • is he the best republican out there -- no.
      • on the other hand it could be much, much worse
      • ojnkpjg
        a mike huckabee theocracy?
      • Senilix thinks Jens Stoltenberg does a good job
      • petros
Sheesh, wouldn't ANY candidate be better than Bush?
      • yllona
petros: very true, my point being that there are far worse republicans than mccain
      • HairMetalAddict has quit
      • petros
No doubt. GHe ssems pretty mello compares to some of the others they
      • reational I mean
      • BrianFreud
yllona: have to agree - Obama v McCain, harder choice for me, but Hilary v McCain, I'd really be tempted to go McCain - no republican I, but I was a big McCain fan last time he was out
      • petros
        rational
      • HairMetalAddict joined the channel
      • ruaok
        luks: ping
      • luks
        pong
      • ruaok
        hi
      • did you get any info from SoC about being a mentor?
      • luks
yes, I got some invitation via mail, so I registered in the SoC webapp
      • ruaok
        great.
      • I've also been wondering if we should stick to the next release being non-schema change.
      • I was hoping to get it out way sooner, but that didn't happen.
      • schema change == TRM dead
      • luks
I was thinking about that, too
      • ruaok
which means that we ought to have a new Picard UI for track oriented tagging by then.
      • there are quite a few schema changes pending.
      • lets keep that question open for now.
      • but I'm entertaining it.
      • luks
the SoC proposal might be interesting for this, since it would solve the picard problem
      • (the one on mb-devel)
      • ruaok
ah. I'll read that in a minute.
      • luks
but if the last year learned me something, then it's to not believe everything in soc applications :)
      • ruaok
        lol
      • luks
so I'm not that optimistic about it
      • ruaok
well, one of the things that I learned from the summit is that its ok to fail people early.
      • for instance, no code by mid-term eval == FAIL.
      • so, you and I need to be much more stringent.
      • BrianFreud
only thing I wonder about the updating concept that's been req'd many times, and is partially beoing discussed there - isn't that rather a heavy load increase on the server, esp if it's so easy that people start doing it frequently?
      • ruaok
set the standards to what we expect. if students don't meet them, we nuke em and move ok.
      • *on
      • luks
        yep
      • ruaok
        BrianFreud: very much so.
      • which is one of the reasons I'm not too keen to work on that.
      • I would much prefer to have RSS feeds.
      • and have someone else serve those feeds.
      • and have picard and co read the feeds and look for changes.
      • those obviating the need to poll for changes.
      • *thus
      • BrianFreud
that database someone was working on would have seemed ideal for that - have it check a local dump for changes, then auto-update somehow, rather than everyone polling each file without even knowing if there's an update
      • ruaok
luks: I'm more optimistic about Alexander because he is coming in with his own ideas about picard.
      • BrianFreud
picard more as the tool to get the mbids in, rather than to continually update
      • ruaok
most successful soc projects are suggested by the students.
      • sure.
      • chefkoch_
chefkoch_ is now known as chefkoch_AW
      • UncleRemus has quit
      • zoke
50%+ of tracks have TRMs associated with them while only ~36% of tracks have PUID's associated with them
      • How long did MB use TRM ?
      • 3 years ?
      • ruaok
        too long
      • 2002?
      • and of those 50%+ tracks, most of those TRMs are now useless. discarded and never to be issued by the TRM server again.
      • its broke. badly broke.
      • zoke
at least there are some identifiers on the tracks though
      • ruaok
        but they are useless.
      • zoke
        true
      • I don't understand though how TRMS worked, what is this TRMServer that I keep on reading about >
      • ruaok
a poor implementation of acoustic fingerprints.
      • it was free. :)
      • and you know how good free software is
      • ruaok prefers open source
      • zoke
you probably won't get a very good open source fingerprinting system though
      • ruaok
        agreed, thus we use PUIDs.
      • BrianFreud
puids aren't open source, but they are quite an improvement over TRMs
      • zoke
I wish some one had a huge MP3 collection that I could just steal for MB
      • luks
somebody should steel last.fm's collection :)
      • *steal
      • ruaok
its been tried. they are not allowed to relicense it.
      • yllona
BrianFreud: for CSG is it "Act I, Scene i"
      • ruaok
you'd have to ask Russ covertly. :)
      • zoke
Can't they run Picard on their collection though ?
      • yllona
last.fm may another choice for acoustic fingerprinting
      • *made another
      • nikki wonders if last.fm files have mb tags
      • ruaok
our fingerprinting aint broke. We're not fixing it.
      • (aside from the broke ass TRM, which we are going to fix)
      • seriously at the last conference two companies were hounding me to include their fingerprinting in MB.
      • erm, no thanks!
      • BrianFreud
        yllona: Act I, Scene I
      • zoke
what is last.fm's fingerprinting alg anyways ?
      • ruaok
voodoo. pure voodoo. like all those algs.
      • BrianFreud
        zoke: they wrote their own
      • zoke
hmm, maybe we should use theirs if it is any good
      • ruaok
but the idea wasn't soley theirs, IIRC
      • zoke: you're not listerning are you?
      • zoke
        woops, let me scroll ip
      • nikki
we can't just keep switching anyway
      • yllona
BrianFreud: like this - "Act I, Scene I: 'Hi! Give Us A Hand!' (Peter)" or "Act I, Scene I 'Hi! Give Us A Hand!' (Peter)" - remove the colon
      • BrianFreud: i working thru Benjamin britten's operas atm
      • BrianFreud
        cool :)
      • yllona
BrianFreud: so colon or no colon?
