        petros: lol :D
      • petros
Well, we only have the fun we make :)
      • zoke
BrianFreud, I would just like to tell you that my project is trying to link MB to wikipedia
      • I think it is impossible though
      • gioele
BrianFreud: maybe it is time to rethink the "notes are not mandatory" bit
      • was there a ticket about adding ASIN, discogs and other URLs to the AddRelease page?
      • Once implemented we could add to it: "it is mandatory to add at least one of these URLs, or state why they do not apply to this release"
      • zoke
it depends on what other URLs are allowed
      • or atleast are deemed acceptable
      • FauxFaux
        Mmm, coke.
      • Freso often add releases without URLs, and wouldn't like having to dig some up
      • zoke
Some one once told me that coke and pepsi will be called the ciggeretts of the 21st century
      • gioele
        zoke: aren't they already?
      • zoke
I guess so, but in the future when we look back on it
      • but hopefully some one will have invented something that tastes just like coke, but isn't full of fat
      • petros
        that would be coke.
      • aka cocaine
      • gioele
      • The original one, not the fake Nestlé or Coca-Cola one
      • petros has quit
      • FauxFaux
The most important bit of coke is the sugar, heretics,.
      • BrianFreud
gioele: I think, in general, we do ok... luckily editors with issues like this one are rare. (Even if they do assume noone but them will udnerstand when they say, for example, "t'es un vrai trouduc" in a note :P)
      • gioele
BrianFreud: not much: 90% of new Italian releases are without a source URL
      • 60% of my request are not responded to
      • BrianFreud
oh, I think having the blanks on the form would be REALLY helpful - people like to fill blanks. I just don't know that it has to be actually a manditory thing...
      • gioele
and a 10/15% of the requester felt hurt by such a request
      • Freso
        "Blanks"?
      • gioele
BrianFreud: mandatory url OR explain why you can't give one
      • empty fields
      • It is late night, I feel _____
      • BrianFreud
        yeah, I guess
      • freso: Discogs/ASIN/Wiki url AR blanks as part of the add release form?
      • Freso
        BrianFreud: As in, separate fields?
      • BrianFreud
yeah - just like you have a blank for the release title
      • pbryan has quit
      • nikki
        Kerensky97: I wrote a reply
      • Freso nods
      • I remember when people used to add loads of non-album tracks and just type gibberish like "asdf" for the required note...
      • Freso
Perhaps it would be an idea to have some "greyed out" text in the edit note field saying something like "Please say why you're making this edits, as well as state any sources you may have (URLs, a physical copy, etc.)".
      • Which would magically vanish once you started typing something in the field.
      • nikki
meh, I'd rather see proper text
      • ruaok
        deadchip: you still there?
      • Freso shrugs
      • nikki manages to submit the "greyed out text" in notes often enough already :P
      • nikki: what time is it in London?
      • 11:30?
      • nikki is in germany :)
      • nikki
        yes
      • ruaok
        feh.
      • 11:30 in germany?
      • Freso
nikki: The trick here would be that the "greyed out text" wouldn't be submitted.
      • nikki
        00:30 in germany
      • deadchip
        ruaok, yeah
      • Di 8. Apr 00:32:57 CEST 2008
      • ruaok
did the time change just happen then?
      • like yesterday?
      • deadchip
        ruaok, it was last saturday
      • nikki
        no, that was last week
      • deadchip
        to sunday
      • ruaok
        oh, ok.
      • we've now two weeks earlier than you.
      • Freso
nikki: I'm not sure *exactly* how this is done, but I've seen it used several time on other websites.
      • ruaok
      • nikki
ruaok: did you see my question yesterday?
      • ruaok
those are two separate instuments being played --- not "Bass Guitar"
      • so that code is all ok.
      • nikki: no
      • Freso
ruaok: It's also listed as two separate instruments... ?
      • ruaok
        yes
      • Freso feels he's missing something
      • nikki
ruaok: I'm curious whether we're allowed urls like the one in http://musicbrainz.org/show/edit/?editid=8583994
      • deadchip
        ah
      • 2 instruments, o
      • k
      • ruaok
        nikki: allowed, apparently. :)
      • desirable, maybe not.
      • is that a user contrib cover?
      • nikki
        yep
      • I've seen a few people trying to get cover art from user submitted covers that way
      • ruaok
heh. maybe that's a loophole for us to exploit.
      • use amazon to upload cover art that we don't have and then link to it.
      • BrianFreud
Thought it violated the AZN ws agreement to deep link that way?
      • ruaok
        I can't recall.
      • did you read that recently?
      • Freso
        Oh well.
      • BrianFreud
        been a while, nothing recent
      • Freso
I really, seriously need to actually go properly to bed.
      • G'night all!

Tykling: Jeg har fundet noget hiphop du skal høre, så prik lige til mig når du kan. =)
      • Freso has quit
      • nikki
it doesn't currently display the cover art when we add a link like that though, if it's acceptable to link to user submitted cover art, it would be good if it did display it
      • ruaok
would someone like to volunteer to read the ToS to see if this is legit or not?
      • then we can set policy...
      • nikki isn't going to volunteer because she's no good at understanding legalese
      • ok, I've gots to run off for a few to exchange backup disks at the colo
      • BrianFreud
Threw this together real quick (as concept): http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y48/brianfreud...
      • Would be quite simple to write for (FireFox only) GM... but the people we most want to get to be adding urls would be the ones least likely to have any MB script installed
      • Mirrakor has quit
      • dseomn has left the channel
      • gioele
BrianFreud: actually the coverart field is quite hard to get right for a new editor (permissions...) and I'd leave the free form note box in it

        MBChatLogger: off

      • is logging
      • FauxFaux
Dig.. th.. mu.. the music industry makes me so sad.
      • BrianG
it makes me cry myself to sleep
      • zoke
argh, why is genpuid such a resource hog
      • FauxFaux
        It's attempting to summon jesus.
      • BrianFreud
        \o/
      • zoke
also, have we developed a systematic way to get new releases in to MB ?
      • I just added a release from october 2007
      • FauxFaux
        Congratulations!
      • BrianFreud
I think there's just simply too many coming from WAY too many labels for us to try
      • FauxFaux
(music industry complaint #1: if the labels actually published a list of what they published..)
      • zoke
what about just monitoring Sony BMG for example ?
      • BrianFreud
Does anyone notice anything kind of odd about this edit? http://musicbrainz.org/show/edit/?editid=8534479
      • like, umm, what release and which track?
      • snarlydwarf has quit
      • nikki
FauxFaux: yeah :/ I would add all the new releases from certain labels if I knew they'd been released >_<
      • FauxFaux
Or, hell (#2), they gave everything that they released a unique name.
      • BrianFreud
I tried for Varese Sarabande, but while it's easy to know what they're going to eventually release in the next few months, it's hard to stay on top of which ones od those they actually just release
      • zoke
or at least a unique number, like ISBN
      • BrianFreud
        ISRC?
      • nikki has been using amazon's web services to go through catalogue numbers lately
      • MrQwerty` joined the channel
      • FauxFaux
Unique {title, artist} pair, unique catalogue number and unique barcode.
      • nikki
I've noticed some stuff about japanese catalogue numbers that I didn't even know before
      • zoke
why am I unable to locate these numbers
      • and why does MB not support them ?
      • nikki
        which numbers?
      • BrianFreud
hell, there's lots of numbers MB could track
      • FauxFaux
        ISRC, I assume.
      • zoke
        ISRC
      • nikki
        ah
      • I wish I could submit the isrcs from my CDs
      • zoke
the more numbers the better, the greater chance of locating the exact release
      • nikki
I know they're there because my ripper puts them in the tags
      • BrianFreud
BMI registration #, ASCAP registration number, ISRC, GRid, etc
      • FauxFaux
My randomly selected cd (now69, universal) has lots of numbers, but none of them look isrcy.
      • (this is such an awful cd)
      • BrianFreud
I have one here with an IFPI number in the matrix area - IFPI L005
      • zoke
hmm, I don't see this number anywhere
      • BrianFreud
Seems like it's digitally stored as a watermark on the recording - "Each ISRC is a unique and permanent identifier for a specific recording which can be permanently encoded into a product as its digital fingerprint. Encoded ISRC provide the means to automatically identify recordings for royalty payments."
      • zoke
oh, so it can be read from the cd itself ?
