That said, though, I *really* like Naxos. I actually have warm fuzzy feelings for their brand.
      • Those are fading a bit more now I know some more about the industry (I hear they're more of an aggregator than a label - I don't know how true that is), but I still really like I can buy pretty much any classical piece for a fiver and get something that's competently performed and clearly recorded.
      • BrianFreud
just keep in mind that they also distribute for others when you enter events frm them (I've made that error once or twice) - they distribute for BIS, for example
      • creature
Did you know you can search Amazon by catalogue number/barcode? I didn't until tonight.
      • That'll make my ASIN-hunts quicker.
      • BrianFreud
I knew you could for UPC - that's how my ASIN script works.
      • didn't know about cat # though
      • creature
Just in general, I wish there was somewhere I could look up what albums have had that pitch-adjustment done on an artist's voice.
      • I don't know if this particular album/track has just been run through a slightly subtle vocoder, or if the artist in question can't sing. :)
      • BrianFreud
        possibly both :P
      • I have one performance of Handel's Messiah which cracks me up each time
      • the soprano sounds identical to Miss Piggy

        Haha.
      • Amazon update: seems I inadvertently lied, and you can't search by catalogue number, just UPC.
      • OK, final classical question tonight now, I promise: consider http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brahms-Schubert-Works-C... . Various Artists or Melos Ensemble?
      • BrianFreud
well, cooperaa's RFC never passed, so technically VA - but I don't think anyone would object if you used Melos as the RA
      • creature
I might check the liner notes and see if the Melos Ensemble performed on both pieces before doing that.
      • BrianFreud
        good idea ;)
      • creature
Also, gah. The Brahms I just added seems to have had too long a name for my filesystem. :(
      • Which seems to have sent Picard a bit nuts in general.
      • BrianFreud
Picard should auto-truncate at 255 character paths...
      • yup, it did what it's supposed to
      • creature
        Why does it do that?
      • BrianFreud
Because the total path exceeded 255 characters
      • Linux can handle 255 characters per path subsection, but Windows can't (easily)
      • FauxFaux
Well clarified. *puts knife away* :)
      • creature
Maybe there should be an "I'm not on a toy OS" option somewhere. :|
      • FauxFaux
        Crazy file-names are crazy.
      • nikki
creature: I have a script to get a list of releases from amazon.co.jp by searching for catalogue numbers, it's great :D
      • but then I realise I've gotta add them all to mb ¬_¬
      • BrianFreud
      • BrianFreud blames MS programmers who didn't correctly extend their own damn shell to override their own default value when they added LFN support
      • creature
Glad that it's a known issue.
      • FauxFaux
I hope the irony of using the console to view these insanely long paths isn't lost on you.
      • creature
I have some tracks on this release by 'Camerata St. Petersburg, Orchestra of the State Hermitage'. Is that one group or two?
      • BrianFreud
        Google might know :)
      • creature
Yeah, I'll research it myself if I have to.

OK, I lied when I said it was my final classical question. With http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brahms-Schubert-Works-C... as a VA release, what would the release title be?
      • creature suggests "Brahms Clarinet Sonatas Nos. 1-2 / Schumann Fantasiestücke and Märchenerzählungen (Melos Ensemble feat. clarinet: Gervase de Peyer, piano: Daniel Barenboim)"
      • BrianFreud would drop the composer names, but otherwise looks good

      • Is there any reason MB doesn't set the genre tag for me? Or even, it seems, try to capture that in the database?
      • Is that just to avoid the myriad arguments that would ensue?
      • ruaok
        the latter.
      • collaborative genres are an oxymoron.
      • nikki does not understand genres
      • creature
I was just thinking, "wouldn't it be awesome if the 'browse by genre' bit on my ipod was actually sane."
      • ruaok
browse by folksonomy tag is more reasonable....
      • creature
        I've seen the Last.fm tag-as-genre plugin. I'll give it a whirl.

        You probably are.
      • After the 9/11 I went to Stockholm. Flying there was no problem, but when we came back a colleague of mine had to leave his keychain there, because it had a small knife in it.
      • I asked if they want to take away my pens too, since they are at least as lethal weapons, but the guys weren't amused.
      • And we're talking about a flight between Sweden and Finland...
      • petros
I wouldn't exactly be joking, ironic nor sarcastic about security issues in an airport. We had a person when asked if he anything to declare, jokingly talking about declaring a bomb. Not a wise move.
      • He had a court appearance :)
      • srotta
There's a difference in joking about bombs and pointing out the idiocy. Of course that doesn't mean the latter is smart either, what with the guys flexing their latex-gloved fingers etc.
      • On the other hand, I've never really understood the hysteric fear of bombs in aeroplane.
      • There's the psychological side of being all alone in the air with nowhere to go to, but put that same bomb in a ship or a train and you'll easily cause more damage.
      • But you rarely see people being turned inside out in train stations.
      • And somewhere a bunch of red LEDs is lighting up as we speak.

POLITICS, n. A strife of interests masquerading as a contest of principles. The conduct of public affairs for private advantage.
