BrianFreud: If the only argument for having an instrument is "A Discogs instrument AR we don't yet list.", please move it to /Discogs. That page is insanely huge now.
BrianFreud: (But good job other than that!)
BrianFreud
Large yes, but organized so it's actually functional - isn't the point that instruments kind of should rot there until they get the blanks filled in?
Freso
BrianFreud: (I had no idea you would take it on yourself to actually reformat the current requests.)
BrianFreud
lol, I kept all comments as is, but that one melodion one is such a mess, I left it as is :P
Freso
BrianFreud: Yes, but I still don't think the fact that they're on Discogs' list is enough that they need to be added ASAP - unlike those instruments that should already be used by ARs.
BrianFreud: But I'm removing tap dance, just a sec.
BrianFreud
well, the Discogs ones create a problem for the 3 or so of us who want to work on a Discogs AR importer - there's too little match between Discogs ARs and ours atm without them
my sense is though, keep it together - if those move elsewhere, someone who needs it will just readd it here, and we'll end up with lists in 2 places, rather than a single centralized list
(but maybe now that it's readable and the blanks can be seen, ppl will fill them in :D )
Freso
BrianFreud: Or perhaps people will just ignore the page now altogether due to the huge amount of stuff that isn't needed in the db as it is.
BrianFreud
lol, any more than people ignore it now?
Freso
BrianFreud: I'm quite discouraged from reading through the page right now, so I'm guessing yes.
BrianFreud: And mo was discouraged just by the Discogs stuff before the restructure... I don't reckon this will help in the least.
BrianFreud
well, honestly, not your fault or mo's, but it takes so long for anyone to move anything from the list in - see the trac tickets and the current mailing list discussion.
But I do think the Discogs ones should eventually be added too - they are 95% of what currently blocks straight Discogs AR importing.
Freso
BrianFreud: That's because we don't know where to put stuff, nor whether it should actually go in at all (ie., isn't a duplicate of something else in the list).
BrianFreud: I'm not disagreeing with that.
BrianFreud: You didn't do a clean port of the discussions btw. TimVanHolden's "Sruti Box" wasn't a reply to my comment, which in fact was added after his "Sruti Box" comment.
BrianFreud
that's the only one I modified - "Box" became "Sruti Box" in his reply to your comment
As for where stuff should go, most of the discogs ones have more info than most non-discogs ones, atm - If you honestly think they should be moved, move them. My sense, though, is that it was the general disorganization of the page which made it unmanagible, not the length of the reqs list (be it 50 or 142, it's still a large list of reqs)
Freso
I didn't have to scroll as much before as I do now.
BrianFreud
sure, but discussions mixed all together, and the data (or current "appears on" count for any given one) wasn't at all clear
scroll != bad... disorder = bad, imho
now people can actually see why any instrument isn't yet added - none have the 5 releases. So if someone really wants one added, they can find 5, fill in the info, and then pester you :)
Freso
Discussions weren't mixed altogether.
BrianFreud
back to back?
don't know about you, but when I looked at the change logs or the emailed change alerts, it was pretty near impossible to actually comprehend any changes in the old form
Freso
Wasn't for me... it is hard for right now though, at a glance, to see where there's discussion and where there isn't.
BrianFreud
only because each instrument takes a decent amount of screen height; in any change report it'd be quite clear - this is where I wish moin had collapsible list support :P
FauxFaux
Oh my, this code is vile.
Freso
BrianFreud: I'm doing a heavy edit right now. Please keep out.
FauxFaux: You too. :)

freso, in that last batch, Cavaquinho got mis-spaced, it's throwing a bunch too far to the right
Freso
BrianFreud: I'll go do Cav-? now, so it'll be fixed.
BrianFreud
(then the missing indent I forgot on Requinto Jarocho fixes it further down :P)

Freso
BrianFreud: So it'll probably have to look a bit odd until I've time to run through all the way.
BrianFreud
that's why I normally just stick with the 4 spacers, instead of the moin tricks for less spaces... easier to keep it consistantly indented
Freso
4 spaces is a waste of space.

[19:22] *Freso would love to be able to work with several structures at once... per-family, per-function, per-age, per-region, ... <- oh yes oh yes!
[19:28] Fresoluks: Right. I'm very much against free-text fields. I'd love to have a free-text field description to accompany the instrument list, but not to replace it. <-- i agree with that too
