      • xlotlu
        df -h /storage/
      • gioele
        yes lossless is freedom
      • xlotlu
        /dev/mapper/LV-STORAGE 99G 90G 6.0G 94%
      • gioele
you rip the CD to flac one
      • nikki
        I did all mine as flacs, then I found out that if I use max in osx, I can get the isrcs in the tags ;_;
      • gioele
than then you encode from that: to hi quality MP3, low bitrate MP3, Vorbis, whatever
      • nikki
and it's faster to rerip them than to copy them by hand >_<
      • MClemo
and if a new nice lossy encoder comes out, you can use that
      • xlotlu
i intend to keep all music rsynced between laptop and server
      • and fast converting to lossy when in a hurry to leave home.. not really fun :)
      • nikki
I just put a few albums on my mp3 player and never change them
      • petros
Then keep an extra repository of lossy at around 160 kbs. Shouldn' take up too much space
      • nikki
I really want a proper one which has its own rechargeable battery, this one eats through my AAA batteries
      • but it was only £7.50...
      • petros
Get what you pay for sometimes :)
      • nikki
yeah, but I can't find a better one that does what I want
      • petros
        Oh. Ogg support?
      • xlotlu
get 8 rechargeable AAAs and cycle them
      • MClemo
xlotlu: you rip the CDs anyway. Not much extra time to transcode them one more time after you have done that
      • nikki
        unicode and flacs
      • petros
Eww, flac on portables. No wonder it burns batteries
      • nikki
xlotlu: I do, but the rechargeable ones don't last as long
      • petros: no, mp3s
      • and no tags ¬_¬
      • not that it can read them anyway
      • xlotlu
nikki: but they're environment friendly :P
      • MClemo: actually the encoding takes *way* longer than the ripping :)
      • nikki
and I stood on my last mp3 player and broke the screen, so I'm used to not being able to read the tags
      • xlotlu: that's why I use them :)
      • MClemo
xlotlu: true. But I don't sit next to it and wait for it to finish
      • xlotlu
        anywyay. flac is overrated
      • petros
        heretic.
      • MClemo
I like the idea to really have "CD quality"
      • nikki
petros: well, I can convert things to ogg or mp3 or something, but if I'm going to pay good money for one, I want one which will be able to handle me putting some flacs on it a couple of minutes before I leave the house :P
      • xlotlu
when i'll be able to tell the difference between a cd and lame --preset extreme i'll switch to flac
      • nikki
        it never stopped me :P
      • aCiD2
xlotlu: if you ripped to flac you don't re-rip as you're now considering doing
      • MClemo
you don't. But you can go as low as -V 5 with lame and don't have to worry that it might be messed up. If it is you can transcode again
      • aCiD2
        that, is the benefit
      • MClemo
        aCiD2: well put ;)
      • petros
nikki: Fair enough. I consider portable player suitable for lossy only, unless used as a tempoary file storage
      • nikki
well yeah, in general I would use only lossy stuff on one
      • aCiD2
When I was at home with 2 computers (one media, one for work) I'd rip a flac on my work computer, rsync to the server, and the server would transcode it to a mp3 automagically, ready for me to pop on my ipod :)
      • xlotlu
umm, aCiD2: you mean, had i ripped to flac the first half of the cds, now i would be less pissed about not encoding to vorbis :/ :)
      • aCiD2
xlotlu: hm? I mean you'd just grab the flacs and convert them all to oggs
      • rather than having to change cds and all that jazz
      • petros
        xlotlu: Exactly
      • luks
        but changing cds is fun!
      • xlotlu
aCiD2: the wishful thinking flacs are now mp3s with --preset extreme :) (half of them at least)
      • petros
You just have some handy flac2(ipod|m4a|ogg|mp3) scripts handy
      • aCiD2
Right, but you go from that to ogg and you're no longer at ogg "extreme"
      • xlotlu
        i want a transparent filesystem
      • nikki gives xlotlu a hard drive made of clear plastic
      • store the flacs in /flacs, and copy back from /ogg where it shows the dir structure mirrored, but only encodes on the fly by request
      • petros wonders if luks is slightly krazy
      • and a pony
      • nikki
petros: I think we all are
      • MClemo
some are more crazy than others though!
      • aCiD2
I like the fuse lame filesystem thing
      • where you can mount flacs as mp3s and it transcodes to mp3s on the fly
      • petros
changig cd is *fun*? That's like saying making love in an iron maiden is enjoyable
      • aCiD2
        thought that was cool :P
      • xlotlu
aCiD2: wanna start working on it?
      • aCiD2
        it's already done
      • I just dunno where
      • xlotlu
        heh
      • MClemo
but it can just do cbr afaik
      • I like my transcoding scripts better
      • nikki
I like the clunk the macbook makes when it swallows the CD :o
      • aCiD2
oh sure, I like more control too, but I thought it was a neat idea :)
      • alastairp
xlotlu: there's a fuse fs that does that
      • xlotlu
        google it for me? :)
      • aCiD2
I just said that alastairp :P
      • alastairp
      • aCiD2: oh, so you did
      • I think I was a little more direct :)
      • xlotlu
MClemo: i just listened to this: http://musicbrainz.org/album/44076e7f-cd93-4263... as mp3s after listening to them from the cd earlier. can't tell any (obvious?) difference.
      • aCiD2
        maybe :
      • xlotlu
        great sound card, great headphones
      • aCiD2
xlotlu: I'm not arguing the difference in quality, I do it for convenience
      • aCiD2 has awful hearing :(
      • good speakers and stuff though
      • nikki
bet mine is worse than yours :P
      • petros
        jpop will do that :P
      • aCiD2
        lol
      • nikki
I didn't listen to jpop back then :P
      • xlotlu
aCiD2: i rip them to mp3 for convenience. it's just that i got a sudden urge to conveniently store them as vorbis :)
      • petros
jpop will *still* do that :P
      • xlotlu
        alastairp: thanks
      • nikki
        hah
      • alastairp
xlotlu: i've actually just killed my ogg collection
      • xlotlu
alastairp: in favor of... ? (lemme guess, flac)
      • alastairp
        well, yeah :)
      • mp3, really,
      • but using flac as the intermetdiate step
      • nikki wonders if it's time to bug apple again
      • Remosi's been working on a bunch of scripts
      • aCiD2
I have flacs and mp3s (for the zoooon)
      • xlotlu
you're all a bunch of snobs with oversized hdds
      • nikki
        xlotlu: damn right :P
      • aCiD2
        s/s//
      • xlotlu
        :D
      • aCiD2
        :P
      • MClemo
hdds are very cheap compared to what I spend on CDs
      • alastairp
        /dev/mapper/media-lvol0 1.8T 1.7T 148G 92% /shared
      • :-P
      • xlotlu
alastairp: mp3 in the end.. why?
      • aCiD2
hdds are also cheap compared to my time :P
      • alastairp
xlotlu: I'm having thoughts of an ipod
      • not yet, but maybe soon
      • MClemo
I got an ipod a few months ago and really like it
      • nikki
I still want flac support in itunes >_<
      • MClemo
now I'm as cool as all the other kids
      • xlotlu
actually, hdds are extremely cheap compared to my work. what's why i prefer to keep my 4 * 500GB hdds under raid1
      • MClemo
        nikki: that'd be nice
      • alastairp
xlotlu: it's more "convienient" for other people, too
      • it's either that, or wma/m4a :-)
      • nikki
yeah, that's why I keep sending them messages asking for ogg and flac support, they'll surely get sick of me asking eventually :P
      • MClemo
or you're on there blacklist ;)
      • alastairp
        can't see it happening :-P
      • MClemo
        their
      • nikki
I have plenty of email addresses to use!
      • I can't see it happening either, to be honest, but I'm still going to annoy them :P
      • alastairp
isn't there that 3rd party hack that does it?
      • MClemo
yeah, don't see it happening either as they have their great apple lossless ;)
      • alastairp
does that work on latest gen?
      • nikki
there's nothing that works properly, afaik
      • alastairp
        yeah
      • nikki
there's apparently something that lets itunes play them, but it can't access the tags
      • which is absolutely useless
      • alastairp
        I don't care about itunes
      • xlotlu
i think it's something about them not liking the ogg container
      • nikki
I only care because everything else for osx is annoying too
      • play is about the best thing I can find, but it can't display albums by an artist
      • luks
you can always transcode to alac
      • nikki
but then I'd need two copies of everything :/
      • stillLotR
xlotlu: if you have four, why not raid5?
      • xlotlu
        raid5 is dead slow
      • stillLotR
        oh
      • stillLotR is now known as LotR
      • xlotlu
        and well, it's degmented
      • *segmented
      • alastairp
I know people that have had real troubles with raid5
      • aCiD2
        demented?
      • nikki
        haha
      • xlotlu
        aCiD2: most probably, yeah
      • ~ half of it 4* raid1, ~ 1/4 raid 10, and the rest raid1 for junk storage
      • make the last one raid0
      • LotR
        raid1 is mirroring, right?
      • alastairp
