like in english there's people who insist it's wrong to do things like end a sentence with a preposition (e.g. "what are looking at?") or split infinitives (e.g. "to willingly do something")
xlotlu
is telling people how to properly use apostrophe considered prescriptivism?
CatCat
loi "splitting infinitives"
nikki
I wouldn't say so, that's more about spelling
CatCat agrees
Clint
spelling prescriptivism vs. grammar prescriptivism
CatCat
languages are ocurringly evolving

srotta
I'd say a healthy dose of prescriptivism is good for you.
CatCat
yes. the key word here is "healthy"
xlotlu
otherwise lolspeak will be the official language of planet earth by 2200
Clint
xlotlu: THAT IS THE NATURAL PROGRESSION YOU MUST RESPECT IT
srotta
It doesn't mean everything should be set in stone in perpetuity, but I'm pretty annoyed with the anything goes mentality of some people.
Tha goes for all areas of life, not just language :P
nikki
english spelling is rather prescriptive anyway, we could write phonetically but then we'd lose the distinction between homonyms and etymological stuff, nobody just acquires the ability to spell, but just by exposing kids to language they'll acquire all the grammar rules of that particular dialect
Clint
especially when they're hypocritical and inconsistent about it?
CatCat
hi clint
Clint
hi mo
CatCat
omg omg second to last dr who of seson 2 is comming up. does that means that next week will have season3?!

nikki
oh and some people insist 'they' as a singular pronoun is completely wrong, but even shakespeare used it
CatCat
lol, thats stupid
xlotlu
so they is not wrong?
CatCat
if *SHAKESPARE* used it
Clint
shakespare is a perfectly valid spelling of shakespeare
CatCat

Clint
no, no, it's fine to have a double standard about spelling and grammar
CatCat

you're going to fault me for this
srotta
And on the other hand, taking Shakespeare as a yardstick... He's been dead for 400 years, I doubt he uses pronouns too much thesee days.
Clint
srotta is my hero
CatCat

jrb

xlotlu: you want me to type $upper() into picard?
xlotlu
Clint: you want you to type $upper() into picard
Clint
xlotlu: and how do i feel about $upper() into picard?
nikki
srotta: the argument is usually something along the lines of "youngsters these days, they don't know anything..." when in fact people have been using 'they' as a singular pronoun for centuries
xlotlu
Clint: i think you don't feel good about it
CatCat embraces nikki
nikki: i need an example of that
CatCat
nikki!!!!!!!!
Clint

there is also evidence of people misspelling things for centuries

CatCat
obviously i am ignored as usual
xlotlu hugs CatCat
nikki :( feel better?
nikki
Clint: like I said, spelling is something you have to learn, you don't learn grammar (except for prescriptivist rules)
CatCat
hmm xlotlu
nikki goes to cook stuff
xlotlu
now don't go all gay on me
Clint
nikki: so how does that make one a good thing and one a bad thing?
xlotlu
Clint: what do you want to uppercase?
srotta
I don't actually get the argument about grammar / spelling anyway. Yeah, there's a difference between spoken and written language, true, but the system works the same way.
jrb
how do I add a new artist when one with the same name (though different person) already exists?
srotta
"Exposing" kids by speaking to them will introduce them to spoken language, exposing them by teaching them to read will result in them learning about written word.
luks
jrb: just like any other artist, but you will be asked to enter a disambiguation comment
srotta
Doing both is probably preferred, and doing it so that people have at least somewhat common understanding of the language is all the better.
jrb
oh, okay.
Clint
xlotlu: all the tag names; it's probably a mutagen issue
jrb
Also, if I'm trying to enter an audio book with no chapters or sections -- just tracks every 3 min, should I go with "Track 01" for each track?
