I had to look it up in wikipedia
      • either way I don't see why not, I'd say the meaning is somewhat changed if you remove the quotes
      • alastairp
but use those quotes, or ".."?
      • warp
Wizzcat: i think alastairp was suggesting changing it to "Hamburger Idylle"
      • alastairp
it's not like there's a style for smartqotes anyway.... is there?
      • srotta
        I hope not.
      • 8)
      • warp
alastairp: I'm in favour of sticking to the cover as much as possible, including these weird quotes. but that is just my opinion, there are probably lots who disagree, and afaik there is no style guideline for it, no.
      • Wizzcat
from what I remember of grammar it's correct to use " for electronics documents, but then again we're replicating print..
      • srotta
        Oh?
      • If we want to replicate print, then let's go scanning. I'd like to stick to the cover as well, but also use some common sense and common conventions.
      • And I'm not saying warp wouldn't do that :P
      • Wizzcat
in that case we should make punctuation guidelines for each language as well ;)
      • srotta
I've heard about that kinds of things being taught in schools.

        Cool, ruaok.
      • ruaok
        :-)
      • this page is still retardedly stupid, but kinda fun
      • FauxFaux
        Heh at "3908/10/7".
      • ruaok
we need a bad date report
      • wait. where did you see that?
      • navap
You can stick in the year 3908 and it will graph it for you
      • FauxFaux
        On that flot page. (Opera)
      • ruaok
        lol
      • the graph package isn't the best.
      • and appears to be dead in the water.
      • if anyone knows of a good and active js chart/graph library, I'd love to hear about it.
      • FauxFaux
We have quite a pro date picker here where I'm supposed to be working, I keep meaning to steal it.
      • Wizzcat
ruaok: plotkit is decent, plus it runs on mochikit
      • ruaok
        got link?
      • Wizzcat
other than that it's somewhat limited, I remember looking and most are tied to framework X
      • FauxFaux
Only one I've seen recently is from http://simile.mit.edu/, they have a "timeplot".
      • ruaok
yeah, the perfect option hasn't appeared
      • Wizzcat
http://www.liquidx.net/plotkit/ it's unmaintained as well though it seems :1
      • FauxFaux
      • ruaok
        timeplot looks interesting
      • alastairp
        hmm
      • ruaok: not trying to be picky, but I htink zeitgeist is the wrong word
      • ruaok
        alastairp: it totally is.
      • please suggest better names.
      • alastairp
        hmm
      • FauxFaux
        NOW
      • Wizzcat
        calendar? :)
      • FauxFaux
        On this day..
      • Mm, could do it with all the historical instances of this date.
      • Wikipedo/newspaper style.
      • alastairp
        that could be neat
      • ruaok
I like timeplot. I'll try that one next. looks *perfect*.
      • FauxFaux
No reason to block changing it, though.
      • Wizzcat
the problem would be knowing what's newsworthy
      • ruaok
and it doesn't want a toolkit.
      • FauxFaux has never personally used it, btw, but their other stuff gets a vote.
      • thanks for the tip, FauxFaux
      • you *are * useful. :-)
      • sometimes anyways ;-)
      • FauxFaux
Little does he know that it deletes all your files 24h after you first use it.
      • ruaok
I can call the new stats graphing page the musicbrainz zeitgeist
      • quite applicable there.
      • alastairp
        yeah

what's wrong with trivia anyway? at least people know what it means, I still don't know what zeitgeist is supposed to be
      • xpika joined the channel
      • warp knows what zeitgeist is, but it doesn't make much sense in the context of musicbrainz.

      • nikki
        not that well :P
      • and even if I look it up, it doesn't make any sense in the only context I've seen it used
      • I wonder if it's an english thing that people like to use complicated words when there's a simple enough one that would mean the same
      • of course, I've forgotten all the ones I've had to explain lately

nikki: I'm annoyed by Finnish people using English words in everyday conversations.
      • Or in TV ads. Or in movie titles.
      • nikki nods
      • I don't necessarily like the French way of doing things, but I'd like to introduce a "Use Finnish, stupid" fine for excessive use of foreign language.
      • warp doesn't mind it here.
      • warp: Yeah, I'm not saying you should speak Finnish.
      • 8)
      • warp
srotta: i mean, when people do that in dutch.
      • though it depends on why they're using english.
      • nikki
I don't like when english borrows words with pronunciations completely different to what we'd expect... english spelling is screwed enough without making it worse :/ not that that would help at all
      • srotta
Because it's hip, cool, and costs less.
      • nikki
german does borrows english words and gives it a pseudo-english pronunciation which I hate

      • LotR
warp: I like how the flemish invent dutch words for most english ones we use
      • nikki
bah, that sentence was just grammatically crap
      • srotta
One of my pet peeves is "Pan's Labyrinth".
      • warp
srotta: i talk to many dutch people who use english a lot. it's not uncommon to not be able to find a dutch word to express something which is easily expressed in english.
      • srotta
Why the hell is it Pan's Labyrinth in Finland? It's not even the original title, damn it.
      • warp: I do too, and that just goes to show people are alienated from their own language. I think that's bad, no matter how you look at it.
      • nikki
I think it's bizarre when they give films names completely different to the original...
      • like shimotsuma monogatari (shimotsuma story/story of shimotsuma) was apparently released as kamikaze girls in america o_O
      • warp
srotta: i don't see much trouble with it. languages are constantly changing, just let it evolve in whatever direction people want to take it.
      • LotR
srotta: no, it just means english has so many words there's almost always one that means precisely what you mean, when you need half a sentence for it in other languages
      • futilius has quit
      • srotta
LotR: I don't believe that for a second.
      • warp
srotta: knowing two languages, if one of them is more fit to express a concept, why should I limit myself to the other language when I know the listener understands both?
      • srotta
Take a look at the traditional "inuit for snow" example 8)
      • nikki
LotR: english also has lots of words which are vague :P
      • LotR
srotta: which is mostly an urban myth IIRC. there are way less than a hundred
      • FauxFaux
        Fruit flies like a LotR.
      • nikki
like hot can be warm or spicy and you can be both singular, plural and general
      • srotta
LotR: Well, name a few in English. Less than hundred will prove your point just fine.
      • nikki
        hmm, not vague, ambiguous

        snow, sleet, blizzard, slush...
      • LotR
srotta: just picking one concept and one other language which has more words for that than english doesn't disprove my point.
      • FauxFaux
        Traditional powder argument.
      • nikki
not that I'm really very good at it, I don't ever see proper snow
      • an inch is enough to make me run around going "omgomgomgomgomgomg!!!" :P
      • FauxFaux
        SNOWBALL FIGHT
      • srotta
LotR: I'm guessing - but just guessing - that you and most others in this channel are pretty involved with IT, which has pretty extensive vocabulary in English. That doesn't really mean it's true in general.
      • I read much literature in English, and I agree, some expressions come easier to me in English than in Finnish. On the other hand, some would be altogether untranslateable the other way round.
      • FauxFaux really should've bothered to learn another natural language.
      • LotR
srotta: but that's usually because it's about something typically finnish I bet.
      • FauxFaux
English first language ftlose, in that respect.
