      • the data's all there in the DB fine
      • Which client library are you using, adhawkins?
      • And does it work for other releases which have ASINs assigned?
      • adhawkins
Yes, works for most of them.
      • It's the latest library I think, but might not necessarily be the absolute latest version
      • Version 3, from CVS, but not been updated for a while
      • Generally works. In the past when we've had this issue, removing the ASIN and re-adding it sorts it.

http://musicbrainz.org/ws/1/release/07039d4c-f9... Well, the XML itself is returning the ASIN
      • So I'm going to say you've got yourself a bug with the client library you're using
      • adhawkins
One sec, let me enable debug.
      • Muzzz
That, or a bug in whatevers parsing the lib's output
      • adhawkins
Well, the library just has a 'Release->getAsin()' call.
      • No parsing involved, just checking if what is returned is empty
      • lauri
*sigh* sometimes the style rules end up with truly silly song titles
      • Furious Angels (bonus disc: Instrumentals) - Instrumental (instrumental)
      • adhawkins
Hmm...library doesn't seem to have a way of enabling debugging any more

lauri: Okay, so we have a truce on the civil war. ;) I'll try to get my hands on a French telephone directory, or at least some collateral that supports how such French names should be sorted one way or the other.

lauri: http://www.metal-archives.com/images/2/1/0/7/21... I hate to imagine how that'd best be titled to keep it in line with the SG
      • So much so, I've not botehred entering it yet
      • Multiple sub titles, a live release too, with multiple discs
      • lauri
        ahaha
      • good grief
      • pbryan
        Muzzz: That's an awesome title.
      • lauri
let me find you one i did enter, after we debated it in here for like 2 hours how to
      • it's nearly as awesome
      • but not nearly as cute
      • nikki wishes thunderbird could count...
      • Muzzz downloads a copy of libmusicbrainz
      • nikki
it says there's one new message, but when I check, there are three
      • Muzzz
nikki: here's a hint, Thunderbird sucks
      • lauri wonders who's singing lead vocal on that rob dougan furious angels track
      • nikki
yeah well, all email clients for macs do
      • Muzzz
        Woah, you're not a raving Mail.app fan?
      • lauri
muzz: subtitle madness, in case it helps: http://musicbrainz.org/release/fc9e6b6e-bd22-4f...
      • nikki
        no, it's rubbish
      • nikki is a raving threaded email fan :P
      • Muzzz
        lauri: D:
      • nikki
grouping them together doesn't count as threading, as much as mail.app would like to think it does
      • lauri
when all else fails, go lisp on it's ass
      • Muzzz
Does Mail.app really not do threading?!
      • nikki
if it does, I haven't worked out how to turn it on
      • it just groups them together so you end up with a list sorted by date
      • Muzzz
(On the topic of shit software, cpan under cygwin sucks)
      • lauri
oh dear god, we have 3 versions of disc 1, and 2 versions of disc 2, and none match the version i have, and one apparently has a mistake on the cover tracklisting
      • which probably means they all do
      • lauri decides not to rip this cd today after all
      • nikki
I ended up switching from mail.app though because it wouldn't check non-inbox folders for new mail
      • so I had to click on like 20 different bloody folders just to check if there was anything there
      • lauri
        omg, that's nuts
      • Muzzz
        adhawkins: where'd you download your client libraries from? Because;
      • $ find . | xargs grep -i getasin
      • lauri
totally defeats the purpose of mail filters
      • nikki
I thought maybe it was gmail's imap stuff, but thunderbird is quite happy to check non-inbox folders for new mail
      • so I guess checking folders + threading > inability to count
      • adhawkins
Err, I'm using CVS I think. One sec
      • Muzzz
Ignore that question, I forgot to cd .. before doing that grep hah

when one tells you there's mail in inbox, you can read it in the one that threads and checks the folders :)
      • nikki
lauri: it tells me there's mail, it just can't count how many there are :)
      • so I'll have 7 and it'll claim there's 4 or something
      • lauri
        oooh
      • adhawkins
        Getting anywhere muzzz?
      • Muzzz
        adhawkins: nae :(
      • adhawkins
        Ok.
      • Muzzz
Hmmm, got a release where it does work?
      • adhawkins
        One sec.
      • Just so you know, I'm querying by discid rather than directly to the release
      • Muzzz quickly goes to wash up dishes
      • tbm
I have a classical music CD on which Anna Gourari plays music from varioust artists on the piano
      • the wiki says I should enter this as a Various Artist CD. But is there still some way to associate this VA releasewith Anna Gourari?
      • oh, "Mixed recitals by a performer" says I shouldn't add it as VA
      • lauri
Set the release artist to Anna Gourari
      • let me find you one so you can see
      • Muzzz
        adhawkins: aha!
      • So, looking up stuff on the XML services using the MBID returns different data to that of a search done by DiscID
      • lauri
      • tbm
        lauri: thanks
      • Muzzz
With the ones you aren't getting ASINs, the XML quite simply isn't returning the ASIN XML ode for some reason
      • adhawkins
Yes, that's the conclusion I'd come to.
      • Muzzz
Why it isn't doing this is beyond me, but the data is all there in the DB fine
      • (also you sooo should have said you were using DiscIDs earlier)
      • adhawkins
Yep. In the past, as I said beofre, Lukz has disappeared off to do something to the database to fix it.
      • ALternatively, removing the ASIN and re-adding it usually sorts it
      • caillon joined the channel
      • Apologies for not mentioning disc IDs earler :)
      • Do you think if I re-queried based on the release ID I'd get the ASIN?
      • Muzzz
Well, the XML format is different, but it does appear to return the ASIN when you query based on MBID
      • adhawkins
Yes, it does for most releases
      • However, you queried one earlier based on the release ID and it worked, when I'm not getting it when I query it based on disc id
      • Muzzz
That was me manually lookinga the XML and not the library heh
      • adhawkins
        Yes.
      • But I suspect the library isn't returning it because it's not coming back in the XML
      • ruaok joined the channel
      • Ah, just checked my code. When I do the query, I first do a 'getReleases' passing the disc ID
      • This returns a list of release IDs, and for each one I do a 'getReleaseById'
      • So I'm not getting the release from the discid if you see what I mean
      • luks, you there?
