hm, I still have a working 386 with 4MB RAM somewhere

i think the macbook i'm using now is actually my third (desktop) system ever.

      • LotR
        macbooks are desktop systems now?
      • 2009-01-08 00848, 2009

      • nikki
how do you count systems, warp?
      • 2009-01-08 00850, 2009

      • warp
        LotR: client then. non-server.
      • 2009-01-08 00817, 2009

      • warp
        nikki: I never upgraded motherboard+cpu, so a system is case+motherboard+cpu. it's ok to replace soundcards/dvdrom/harddisks/etc... :)
      • 2009-01-08 00832, 2009

      • nikki
hmm, what if I replace the case? :)
      • 2009-01-08 00808, 2009

      • brianfreud
what about when I had to replace one of the 2 cpus?
      • 2009-01-08 00829, 2009

      • nikki
my old computer with the mb db and stuff has had three cases, about 5 psus, about 8 hard drives, along with about 4 changes of ram

      • nikki
so I just count the motherboard (and cpu in this case, since it never changed)
      • 2009-01-08 00850, 2009

      • nikki
        haha
      • 2009-01-08 00851, 2009

      • warp
nikki: i guess it's kind of personal. for my pentium III, the case is most of the personality of the machine... i started putting stickers on the case.. it had been collecting stickers for years when I stopped using it.
      • 2009-01-08 00800, 2009

      • 2009-01-08 00818, 2009

      • warp
        er.. not pentium III. pentium1.
      • 2009-01-08 00832, 2009

      • warp
        nikki: hihi :)
      • 2009-01-08 00832, 2009

      • brianfreud
for me, I count it as still this same system so long as I'm still using the same motherboard, which by now I know just about every single flaw on
      • 2009-01-08 00804, 2009

      • LotR
I think motherboard+cpu counts as a system, but if you have to replace either because it broke, that doesn't count as a new system (esp, since you can't upgrade just one very far without having to upgrade the other as well)
      • 2009-01-08 00815, 2009

      • FauxFaux has been on under a machine a year for 4 years, all good. ¬_¬
      • 2009-01-08 00827, 2009

      • nikki
but it was too small, the psu overheated several times which triggered some bug in the hard drive (apparently...o_O) which made it confused about what kind of drive it was and I lost all my data, so I bought a bigger case (and psu and hard drive of course)
      • 2009-01-08 00843, 2009

      • FauxFaux
        Excluding scavenged and laptops. :/
      • 2009-01-08 00816, 2009

      • brianfreud
hell, if I wanted to upgrade, the RAM's useless now, half the hard drives would be useless, half the expansion cards would be useless, even the power supply (650 Antec) would be useless... I'd have to basically replace all but two hard drives
      • 2009-01-08 00834, 2009

      • nikki
but that case was poorly designed and I kept hitting the power button with the wheels on my chair, so I got yet another case (with the power button behind a door ¬_¬)
      • 2009-01-08 00840, 2009

      • LotR
one a year? heh. I never got a new system within 4 years :)
