        How does livejournal do it?
      • 2009-02-02 03331, 2009

      • navap_ got disconnected but cheated and read the chat logs
      • 2009-02-02 03332, 2009

      • nikki
it says "English • Español • Deutsch • Русский…" which is linked to the change languages page
      • 2009-02-02 03331, 2009

      • navap_
Yes and they also have display settings on that page
      • 2009-02-02 03309, 2009

      • nikki
        ah, at the bottom
      • 2009-02-02 03335, 2009

      • navap_
What about a select box at the top right of the page?
      • 2009-02-02 03354, 2009

      • navap_
Solves the Spanish problem, and makes good use of that space.
      • 2009-02-02 03355, 2009

      • nikki
        sure
      • 2009-02-02 03300, 2009

      • navap_
The issue I raised was, that the space is created (/increased) when the sidebar is toggled off.
      • 2009-02-02 03318, 2009

      • navap_
So I would recommend putting something there that you would normally have access to on the sidebar.
      • 2009-02-02 03355, 2009

      • nikki
hmm... maybe if the user hasn't set a language, it could be a dropdown, but if they have, just a link to the preferences
      • 2009-02-02 03343, 2009

      • navap_
        That would work
      • 2009-02-02 03339, 2009

      • nikki
'cause most people aren't going to need to change their language once they've picked it, so it seems a bit silly to include a form every time they load a page
      • 2009-02-02 03303, 2009

      • navap_
Although, I would want the link to point somewhere else, maybe a Getting Started guide?
      • 2009-02-02 03341, 2009

      • nikki
        hm?
      • 2009-02-02 03307, 2009

      • navap_
Agreed, that is one of the reasons I would be very opposed to having a language selection front and centre on every page.
      • 2009-02-02 03320, 2009

      • navap_
The link that is displayed instead of a language selectionl
      • 2009-02-02 03359, 2009

      • nikki
but why would "English" link to a getting started guide?
      • 2009-02-02 03323, 2009

      • navap_
        hm?
      • 2009-02-02 03304, 2009

      • navap_
I'm thinking of a dropdown box on the top right, once you have picked a language it could be replaced with a link to a Getting Started guide.

      • nikki
I don't think we should... what if someone picks the wrong language? then it's just panic because they don't know where to change it
      • 2009-02-02 03355, 2009

      • nikki
but if they can just follow a link from the same place, it takes them to where they can change it

        yes
      • 2009-02-02 03301, 2009

when I was about 12, it snowed a lot and I wanted a sledge to go down this big hill near where I lived... we couldn't find one until after the snow had gone, so my mum got one anyway and it's never snowed (and lasted more than a few hours) since :P

do you think http://musicbrainz.org/show/release/?releaseid=80… should set to high quality? it looks kinda lacking in information to me, but it's not like I've really paid much attention to the data quality things
      • 2009-02-02 03306, 2009

      • nikki

Yes, which works quite nicely. The problem is that the system was preinstalled with a lot of packages installed manually, so I marked all as automatically installed and now I'm going through the list, selecting only those which I really need :)
