      • last time we chatted with luks, he told me the works table should be more of a "things" table
      • and could be used to store performances etc.
      • although this page dismisses it
      • what is the latest status on that? is there no place in the ngs where we could put performance information?

      • ruaok
        wb :-)
      • pronik has spent the last four hours trying to setup review board at work
      • pronik hates active directory auth, but the result is worth it :)
      • warp
hm, that part didn't take me that long.
      • but it's completely unusable on my machine at work, all that js is slow or buggy in the browsers I tried.
      • pronik
I'm in a real big company atm, so I had to find a bug in review board to get it running
      • user groups with spaces in their OU suck too :)
      • ruaok
        OU?
      • pronik
organization unit, if I'm not mistaken
      • warp nods.
      • part of LDAP/AD configuration and addressing system
      • ruaok
        ah
      • pronik
essentially a path, but on crack :)
      • warp tries to know as little about all that as possible.
      • pronik too
      • but as it turns out, the more I know, the easier I can tweak that stuff
      • and abuse too :)
      • warp
        obviously
      • but I don't want to tweak that stuff.
      • it's been almost a year since I had 'sysadmin' scrapped from my contract
      • pronik
me neither, but when I sometimes see who gets to tweak it, I'd better do that myself
      • next week for me: setting up nightly tests
      • with a brutal perlcritic :)
      • warp
        :D
      • I comitted the first unittests ever to the application I spend most of my time on.
      • pronik
normally, I would have to endure some bureaucratic process to get rb installed somewhere
      • with a possibility that it'd never happen
      • warp
(application is atleast 15 years old, the php codebase I'm hacking on probably around 8 years or more... it's a mess)

      • and then I looked into templates
      • and did a s/font/span/ :)
      • but that code is more like 1999

      • ruaok
      • I thought amarok had given up on MB and decided to use something better?
      • warp
        :D
      • outsidecontext
        lol
      • beside telling everybody they would use something better they never came up with anything
      • pronik
I would not use "better" and "amarok" in one sentence ;)
      • outsidecontext
the amarok developer i talked to at the gsoc summit last year did not even really know what musicbrainz was
      • ruaok
        lol
      • amarok seems a little disorganized.
      • pronik
look at the gui, of course it's disorganized!

      • pronik still hasn't found his ideal player
      • ruaok
        me neither.
      • I'm using Play right now, but its far from perfect.
      • pronik
amarok2 sucks badly, quodlibet is slow, rhythmbox deprecated, banshee crashes on me, exaile is slow AND crashes
      • muine and other I won't even touch
      • ruaok
        :-(
      • LotR
'ideal player' is like 'good mail client', isn't it?
      • warp
mpd is too basic, but it's reliable and convenient for me.
      • ruaok
I thought it was funny that in 1999 I thought it to be stupid to be writing a new mp3 player.
      • warp
LotR: or browser. or OS. this industry just sucks in general ;)
      • ruaok
and now, 10 years later it sounds like a good idea. :)
      • pronik
        perfect browser now exists: uzbl.org
      • ruaok
cept that like a mail client... its really hard. :-(
      • ruaok nods at LotR
      • warp
        I really don't understand what's hard about mail :)
      • pronik
        gmail is nice
      • LotR
        warp: go read the RFCs
      • pronik
I like how the reduce the primitives
      • warp
LotR: we're not talking about MTA's, but MUA's
      • pronik
LotR: we are talking about MUA I guess
      • warp: ding!
      • warp
LotR: only needs to speak IMAP imo.
      • LotR
warp: then, go figure out how all other clients are incompatible with the RFCs and how you have to work around that
      • you still need to understand the format of a message
      • also, yay unicode
      • warp
LotR: sure, but parsing mail is Solved, there are excellent libraries for that sort of ithn.g
      • LotR
and 'only IMAP' is funny too.. good luck getting it to work nicely against every imap server
      • warp
        well, _I_ don't need every :)
      • LotR
because you're not writing a client.
      • srotta
And of course, there's this thing called UI.
      • Which is pretty much impossible to get right.
      • Particularly in open source.
      • LotR
if only existing clients had better ui/logic seperation. then I could at least make the UI right *for me*
      • srotta
LotR: Doesn't Thunderbird use XUL and it's therefore Perfect?
      • warp
pronik: uzbl looks like way too much work :)
      • srotta: oh, I want my mail client textmode, it doesn't need all that much UI.
      • srotta
warp: Well, Pine does IMAP, it uses text mode => mission accomplished.
      • warp
it's probably just as good as mutt
      • (which is pretty bad :)
      • LotR
        srotta: uh, right.

luks: serious props... this multiple artists implementation is really nice.
      • There's one missing view, but I think that's just a question of our writing the right templates -> Being able to narrow down to only see those releases Foo & Bar both are on
      • luks
that's easy to add, but I'm not sure if it's that useful
      • brianfreud
well, take an artist who worked with a lot of people - Bob Marley, or Neil Young
      • for those, you may have a good many releases with the same collab
      • luks
arguably those should have their own artist entries
      • brianfreud
arguably, but I think, in most cases, I'd come down on those still being only collabs, not group artists in their own right
      • I think the dividing line would be when the collab gives themselves a name
