here's the really weird shit bit. Open it in iTunes before tagging, plays fine. Tag it in picard, and double click in iTunes - plays fine, refreshes metadata
remove it from iTunes and re-add it, pop gets added
alastairp
tried not adding gain yet?
aCiD2
Wavegain is mainly there because my vinyl always comes out at different volumes due to the normalizing process
alastairp
or add it with mp3gain instead
aCiD2
wavegain doesn't affect the files
it just gives the --scale value for lame
alastairp
oh, so it does end up as an mp3gain?
aCiD2
Nope, it directly alters the data that lame encodes
(lame amplifies it internally)
alastairp
Use with care, since most MP3 decoders will truncate data which decodes to values greater than 32768.
--scale sounds scary
aCiD2
I scale down, not up :)
alastairp
right
aCiD2
scale is capped to 1.0
nikki
and it worked fine for me with the same mp3s
aCiD2
I gave this mp3 to briang and nikki, and neither could reproduce it
I just don't get how iTunes can modify it, when I've done chmod 400 on the file... I thought that meant that nothing could touch it, and only my user could read it?
Oh well, dragging files into iTunes doesn't seem to break them (only "add to library" breaks them0
so I guess this is solution enough to get my crap onto my iPod
nikki
hmm, I think I dragged them into itunes
nikki tries using add to library
aCiD2
double clicking them works too, it's just add to library that seems to fudge them
nikki
hmm... add to library doesn't do it either
but then again I'm using 8.whatever, so who knows...
aCiD2
but 8 still has the gapless thingy
which is what I think is the problem
nikki
gapless thingy?
aCiD2
gapless playback analysis
when you add to library it spends 2 years freezing itunes saying "analyzing gapless playback information" or something
nikki doesn't use itunes (hence why I've still got an older version, I don't care since I'm not using it ;))
nikki
hmm
aCiD2
you know what. fuck this. dragging them in is now corrupting them too -_-
aCiD2 goes to bed

Any chance of getting an AR (or equivilent) to store when a recording was made? While the bootleg naming convention says you can use a date in the title, not everything uses it
There are lots of albums like: Unknown year for u'The Cure' u"... and Dreams Come True in '92 (disc 2)"
where the year is unambiguous, but there is no fixed metadata stating it
alastairp
should there be a release event for it?
that would make it clear, but there may not have been a physical release
Remosi
yeah, I don't think many of these were officially releaed
thus no release date
dinog
if an artist is credited as "featured" inside the booklet, but not on the tracklist on the back cover of the CD, is adding "(feat.
)'s" necessary to the track title's necessary?
as opposed to just adding AR's
stasis joined the channel
alastairp
dinog: I believe not
using ARs/featured artists in ngs is the preferred way
dinog
is there a featured artist relationship type in NGS?
alastairp
yeah, I think so

I am a new user to MusicBrainz, and would like to note that the installer does not include the necessary files to install properly.
I had to download the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package" in order to get the "MusicBrainz Picard" to launch without error.
Just wanted to let the appropriate people know, was some will get discouraged and merely uninstall the application.

is there any reason why i shouldnt be able to click on the tagger button on the website and have the album info imported into picard? cos atm tisn't wokring
warp
Ezek1el: did you restart picard perhaps?
Ezek1el
did both ff and picard but will try again
warp
Ezek1el: er, no, that's not what I meant :)
Ezek1el
by restart picard what did you mean then?
warp
Ezek1el: the green tagger links end in &tport=8000 or something, right?
_if_ you've restarted picard, that '8000' may be wrong. you will have to do another lookup in picard, which will let the server know what port your current picard is using.
Ezek1el: if you can't get it to work, a workaround is to drag the url of a release from your browser to picard.
Ezek1el
ah ok, thanks will try that :)
kinda seems like the site it down or very very slow atm
is*
down it is
warp
indeed :(
Ezek1el
maybe ngs rollout, though that would seem sorta unlikely, maybe
warp
no, that's still some way off.
Ezek1el
ah well, wishful thinking
aCiD2 FINALLY has a working solution
aCiD2 carries on ripping cds that he can actually listen to :)
