That's weird. Purely by coincidence, three of the CDs I've looked at today were mastered by the same person.
      • well, it's not entirely coincidence. Two of the CDs were by the same artist through the same record label.

      • kepstin
        yeah
      • awesome, I managed to figure out this drummer's first name, and he's already in musicbrainz
      • huh, that's a new one. http://www.myspace.com/nksound - a recording engineer in tokyo of east indian descent who was born in california.
      • or apparently not new, because he's already in musicbrainz.

      • hmm. jesus2099's comment on http://musicbrainz.org/show/edit/?editid=13607743 brings up an interesting point
      • NGS doesn't allow having separate catalogue numbers for each disc of a multi-disc release
      • is that something that should be supported?
      • nikki thinks so, of course :P
      • nikki
but I doubt it'll get done for ngs :/
      • kepstin
one thing i've seen on some of these releases with bonus discs is that the first disc will still have the catalogue number for the single-disc release, and have the UPC code for the single-disc release embedded
      • nikki
although it does allow multiple catalogue numbers, it just doesn't let you say "this is for disc 1, that is for disc 2"
      • hm?
      • kepstin
      • which contains a CD labelled VTCL-60085 and a DVD labelled VTBY-4
      • nikki
        interesting...
      • I haven't seen any like that yet, I've only seen ones where each disc has the disc number appended (e.g. the spine says ABCD-1234, disc 1 is ABCD-1234-1 and disc 2 is ABCD-1234-2) and those ones with letters like the avex ones
      • although I do have some where the dvd has a completely different catalogue number
      • kepstin
http://musicbrainz.org/release/0809c1e9-35dc-4d... is weirder - VIZL-222 is literally just a box containing the regular (digipak) release of VICL-62300 and a seperate digipak of VIBY-278 which is the DVD
      • DarkAudit joined the channel
      • hmm. A few of the japanese releases that i've gotten recently are kind of odd.
      • they come in a jewel case that's slightly thicker than normal
      • nikki
        they're japanese :P
      • how much thicker though?
      • kepstin
        about a millimeter
      • kepstin takes a photo
      • hmm.
      • kepstin takes a better photo
      • nikki
        hehe
      • kepstin puts the SD card back in his camera, /then/ takes a better photo
      • kepstin
      • from left to right that's thin (a single), regular, thick
      • they use the extra space in the thick cases for larger booklets
      • it might just be something weird with victor entertainment - I have two of these, and they're both victor entertainment releases.
      • nikki
ohh. I thought I had a wider one
      • I do have one like that, but it comes with a slim-cd and a card thing that slips over them, so it's realllly wide anyway
      • (and mine's an avex one)
      • kepstin
but yeah, 44-page booklet printed on thick card stock in there.
      • nikki
and I have a couple which are even wider than that
      • kepstin
some of the older two-cd cases got to be really wide
      • nikki
yeah, those are like two trays
      • but not the sort which have a separator between them, they're not quite that wide
      • kepstin
I don't really like the current style of 2-cd cases which have a flip-out bit, they're always too fragile and fiddly.
      • and half flip out one way, half the other way, and I can never remember which is which
      • nikki finds another slightly wider one
      • nikki
        pony canyon this time
      • kepstin gives it another 2-3 years before we start seeing them in north american and european releases
      • kepstin has left the channel

      • nikki likes super jewel boxes
      • kepstin
        'super'?
      • nikki
they're the ones with rounded corners and spines on the top and bottom as well as the sides
      • although I have to say that the standard cases I get with japanese releases seem to be better than the ones I get from other countries. maybe they're just made of stronger plastic or something
      • kepstin
I actually have one of those 'SHM' CDs that some japanese companies are promoting.
      • have yet to see a difference :)
      • nikki
        hence calling them sham-cds :P
      • kepstin
it's entirely possible that the alternate plastic formulation they're using increases scratch resistance, but I'm not about to test that :)
      • nikki
it'd be nice to be able to mark them (and blu-spec) ones in the db though
      • I did notice that some labels are using specific catalogue numbers for them
      • kepstin
yeah, on releases where they have both, the SHM tends to have a price premium
      • pankkake
oh, nice boxes, and fully transparent
      • nikki
I think sony uses digits starting with 90000 for blu-spec and emi uses digits starting with 20000 for shm... or vice versa
      • pankkake
I have a lot of standard cd cases where the CD holder is black, and it masks the artwork behind
      • nikki
those look really old fashioned to me :D
      • nikki is used to transparent cases
      • kepstin
        the JVC one I have is -70001 and -70002 (it's a two-disc set)
      • nikki nods
      • but I don't know if that's because it's SHM; I don't think it's the first release they put out in the format
      • nikki
I think victor don't have specific numbers... I was investigating them, 'cause then I can tag them :D
      • kepstin
the other JVC discs I have tend to be 30000 (singles) or 60000 (albums)
      • herojoker
        a|(
      • nikki
oops. sony use 20000 for blu-spec, emi use 90000 for shm
      • nikki would love to know what herojoker actually means
      • kepstin
        «û×ß
      • nikki
ah, there's one release I have where there was a blu-spec version... the normal limited edition with the dvd was ¥3,800, the blu-spec version with the dvd was ¥6,666
      • I thought about getting it to see what's so special... until I saw the price :P
      • kepstin
yeah. the one SHM release I have is because it was /only/ released as SHM :)
      • flamingspinach joined the channel
      • someone familiar with victor catalogue numbers might be able to guess.
      • nikki
the first one has a dvd?
      • kepstin
        yep.
      • nikki
        ehehe
      • the strange thing is that I only have a couple of victor releases
      • but I seem to spend an awful lot of time figuring out their labels and catalogue numbers
      • kepstin
yeah, a couple of my favourite artists are on flying DOG, so I have a bunch of Victor releases.
      • MClemo joined the channel
      • hmm. there does seem to be a bit of a pattern to their catalogue numbers. VI?? is Victor, VT?? is flying dog, 6xxxx is albums, 35xxx is maxi singles, 30xxxx and 1xxxxx are 8cm singles
      • 30xxx and 1xxxx*
      • nikki
        ooh
      • I knew about VI and VT
      • kepstin
if the third letter is 'D' it's an 8cm CD, 'C' is a 12cm CD, 'B' is a video DVD, 'X' is bluray, 'Z' is combination
      • nikki
yeah, I was collecting the third letters for ages, then I found out there was already a list on the japanese wikipedia :P
      • kepstin
I wonder if they ever change the 4th letter, I only think i've seen 'L'
      • nikki
        they do
      • I think they use them for sub-labels, like I think VICB is babestar
      • and I've seen VICJ for some jazz stuff I think...
      • oh. seems that VICB is the only one
      • (for sublabels I mean)
      • kepstin
ah. the fourth letter is P on their releases by foreign artists
      • Dremora joined the channel
      • now that's just weird. A new release by ROUND TABLE (not featuring Nino). http://www.jvcmusic.co.jp/m-serve/-/Discography...
      • nikki wonders if the featuring nino ones will be handled by linking both artists in the artist credits in ngs
      • currently ROUND TABLE and ROUND TABLE featuring Nino aren't linked at all
      • nikki nods
      • nikki
I wondered the same about the country musume ones too
      • kepstin
it looks like the prevailing theory about ROUND TABLE featuring Nino was that it was a name change after they added Nino
      • but I guess not if they're putting out a new ROUND TABLE-only release.
      • might make sense to redo it as a 'collaboration' between ROUND TABLE and Nino, or NGS artist credits.
      • nikki
well, don't forget that at the time people were like "it says featuring! you should put (feat. Nino) on everything instead!!" ;)
      • (if you're talking about the annotation I mean)
      • kepstin
now we have 14 pages of artists containing 'feat', only 2 of which actually are people named Feat...
