"Attempting to create a generic purpose one that handles special characters of multiple languages is brain dead because there may be other rules that affect alphabetization in them."
and yet, that is exactly what we have to attempt in musicbrainz :)

nikki; I replied in http://musicbrainz.org/show/edit/?editid=14273514 (because you don't receive my emails any more) . I'm moving the release to the artist name that's on the package (like Artist Credit in NGS). Isn't this the way to do for best situation possible in NGS?
Hm.. is anyone familiar with genpuid tool and m3lib cache format? I wonder if it's possible to create cron job that goes over my music collection and generates PUIDs for songs that do not have one yet.
But since I have over 25k songs in library, some kind of cache is required, to parse only new ones. Any ideas?
Wizzcat
assuming you're tagging your songs with the puid it really shouldn't take that long to check each one for whether or not a puid exists
lidel
Wizzcat, good point. Is Picard always adding PUIDs, or only when I explicitly did fingerprint lookup on that file?
Wizzcat
I'm not actually sure, probably not unless you scan.
Personally I've rather stopped caring about PUIDs, an MBID is more valuable in a library.
warp has never used pweeeds.
reosarevok used them only once, to try to find what was in an iPod where half the tracks had become FREA or LKFE or the like
lidel
I wonder what is current status of PUIDs.. http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/Summer_Of_Code_Ideas states: "Acoustic fingerprinting projects: There are new and open acoustic fingerprint projects coming out soon, so we don't need to focus on this."
Seems that they will be replaced/superseded by open solution in future
*with ;-)
Wizzcat
luks already has a promising one going. No idea whether it will be tied to mbz officially or not.
But yes, the closed-sourceness of PUIDs is a pretty big turnoff.

Yeah, there are several things being worked on in the fingerprinting field
Hopefully all open

If a release is only available for streaming (for example, in Bandcamp) but not for download / digital sale / physical sale / anything… is it still a release? Is it a bunch of standalone recordings? If a release, what should the release events be?
hello world. how much more would you pay for an ISP that isn't evil? arrgh. I hate having to make these decisions. Why is the evil one never the expensive one?

caller_6: I don't pay _much_ more, but I do settle for less bandwidth.

lidel / caller_6: regarding the unicode moratorium, the way I’ve been handling it is to avoid entering edits changing ascii→unicode, but new stuff I still enter with Unicode.
Tecfan
reosarevok, more like a non-album track.
hawke_
Just so that it doesn’t make even more work for later
Tecfan
caller_6, to make you jelly: my isp upgrades my line from 15/15 to 40/40 for free :D
caller_6
hawke_: makes sense.
lidel
hawke_, yes, that was the case (edit was to change ascii to unicode)
caller_6
My ISP problem is, would I pay more for a local company that doesn't throttle torrents. Which makes me put price on an ideal. Which makes me evil too.

caller_6: Is it evil to only patronize companies who act in your preferred way, even if they’re more expensive?
caller_6
hawke_: It's evil to have to ask myself "at what price will I abandon a principle".
hawke_
Heh.
caller_6 will stop grumbling about it
I think it’s just a balance of evlis
*evils
On the one hand, restrictions of activity…on the other, price gouging. :-)
caller_6
I was thinking of it more as, on one hand a huge communications company is treating the internet into a fancy television channel; on the other hand, I'm broke. :P
not treating, "making"
warp
throttling torrents? wtf?
caller_6: I would definitely avoid giving money to such a company if I could avoid it.
This straddles the line between "cover" and "arrangement" in my mind, since the instrumentation is so different. I'll listen to it for a bit before weighing in.
reosarevok
Well, when you decide just make the edit (or not) ;)

I've seen an mp3 file with IDs for its album, artist and track - this is done by musicbrainz, right?
Can I do something like this to all my music?
creature
konr: Yep. Using Picard is the easiest way. It's an automatic tagging program.
