Once you're in a merge page with the two releases on it, you'll see lots of options: press "single artist"
And let me know :)
Snartal
hmmm, I didn't get all that. I just got a page that says "Merge Into"
And I can pick one or the other.

Should I go with that?
reosarevok
Hmm
Did you press merge on the release, or the artist?
Snartal
It says "Merge Release Groups"
You are about to merge the following release groups into one release group. Please review the Release Groups guidelines to ensure that you're merging release groups properly.
reosarevok
Oooh, ok
Yeah
But we want to merge the actual releases :)
Because they're a duplicate
(normally, they wouldn't be and we could just merge the groups, but this time, they are)
(the one which is in the release area, close to the cover art)
Snartal
ok, I have no idea how I selected the two releases, but they are there, and I clicked single artist

reosarevok
Ok
Now
Scroll to the end of the page
And see which release is on top
Snartal
The compliation one
reosarevok
Nice
Then
You should select
Keep release attributes of the target release. (target release is the top one, and you want to keep it a compilation)
Snartal
k
reosarevok
It doesn't matter for "Language/Script" because both are "English, Latin"
And usually you *would* say "merge release groups"
But you're merging them already
So choose " Don't merge release groups."
Snartal
ok, so even though the PUIDs are in the bottom one, they will merge into the top one?
reosarevok
Yes
Snartal
ok, so click merge?

reosarevok
Yes, but leave an edit note saying they're duplicates just in case :)
Snartal
ok, done
spacecolonyone joined the channel
ok, I'm getting it now....... first one was merge the album (release), second one was merge the release group.
reosarevok
Well, this one was to merge the release, actually
Snartal
ok.
reosarevok
But yeah
If you merge the releases
You don't have to merge the groups before, because as you've seen
You can just tell MusicBrainz to merge them at the same time
(it will still be two edits, though… both are done together, but one can be accepted and the other rejected)
Snartal
got it. Well heck, I need 11 edits anyway - lol
So the reason it was coming up with the correct artist was this..... I was looking at a release group, which had the gangsta rap 38 special assigned to it. within that release group, there was a release, which had the classic rock 38 special assigned to it.
So, artists for release groups and releases themselves are separately assigned?
reosarevok
Yes
Well, *normally* they're not
But they can be
Which I mean is: 99,99% of the times they're the same, but yeah, they are separate fields
Snartal
Yea, seems a bit strange to have an artist for the release and the release group, but I'm sure there is a reason for that.
reosarevok
Yes
For example
You can have a 2xCD
Disc 1 is by band A, disc 2 by band B
But they're sold together
That would have band A as release artist for disc 1, band B for disc 2, and probably Various Artists for the release group
Snartal
ok.
reosarevok
(Not that common, but I've entered some of those myself)
Snartal
Well, good thing I'm picking easy ones for my first edits! lol

It can also happen that the artist for the release is different than the artists for the tracks
(I think that happens only in releases with tracks by various artists, but I might be forgetting some situation)
For example, a DJ-Mix CD tends to have the DJ as the release artist, and then the specific artist assigned to each track
You'll get the hang of it
But don't learn *too much*, because the new musicbrainz is coming in one month ;)
Well, I think it's a good moment for an European like me to go to bed :)
