won't it fail anyway, with a stunning 15 No votes?
nikki
yes, but it's better if we can close it now
'cause the fewer edits there are, the easier it is to see which ones we can approve and which will just fail
reosarevok
flamingspinach: what about the doubly stunning 34 no votes from the previous link? :D
flamingspinach
then we should track down KeithIrwin and cooperaa too, no?
nikki
I already sent cooperaa an email
(wasn't going to comment and spam everyone ;))
meh
flamingspinach
reosarevok: haha whoa
nikki
now I'll send this keith guy one too
unless he's in here
flamingspinach
why would you vote yes on that...
actually why would you even make that edit... too bad there's no edit summary to tell us :P
nikki sent him a message too
nikki
flamingspinach: are you not going to add to all the no votes then? :P
flamingspinach
that just seems opportunistic :P
nikki
aww
flamingspinach
I feel guilty about not voting no on the unsung bad edits that doubtless slip by all the time...
this edit freeze does have the benefit that it made people (other than me) start voting on edits :P
I guess I'm only in the second layer of ruaok's onion (as described at https://jhemerly.wordpress.com/robert-kaye-inte... ) so I don't have much of an opinion on most edits, so I don't usually vote...
reosarevok
flamingspinach: yeah. It's a shame that NGS is going to launch such an amount of work and recording merges upon us that nobody will have the willpower to vote on them :(
nikki shakes her head
nikki
I read that as "so I don't have much of an onion on most edits"
flamingspinach
lol
that too is a true statement
reosarevok wishes we had much of an onion on most edits
reosarevok
We could end world hunger
nikki
although the world would be much smellier
reosarevok likes the smell of onion anyway
nikki likes the taste of onions but hates cutting them
reosarevok
Oh, but you see
They'd be cut already!
That's why we would have much of an onion, not a full onion
:D
nikki
they'd probably still hurt my eyes
reosarevok has red onions with everything
reosarevok
Pasta with onions, rice with onions, potatoes with onions, bread with onions
Well, I actually haven't tried cereals with onions
nikki
haha
reosarevok
Probably for the best
nikki
hmm
it's been a long time since I had red onios
onions too
I always get white ones
reosarevok
aww
White onions are boring
nikki
I wonder if I've even seen red ones here...
alex-hu
How could I submit tag name corrections (and other metadata) corrections to the database? Is getting an account and using picard sufficient?
nikki
alex-hu: at the moment you can't edit (we're in the middle of closing all edits so we can do a big upgrade)
reosarevok
Normally, you don't even need Picard, as long as you have an account
nikki
but yes, you just need an account and then you can edit on the website
reosarevok
You need time, willingness and sources
Especially sources
:)
alex-hu
What do you mean by sources? Original rips?
reosarevok
Nope
Something that proves the changes
(be it scans, URLs, whatever. some kind of proof)
alex-hu is puzzled
aeontech
link to discogs listing of album, amazon, scan of cd back cover showing tracklist, or artist's official discography entry for the album is normally what is used
to show that your correction is in fact correct
usually not hard to come by
alex-hu
aah, ok; no problem with that ;-)
reosarevok is amazed at the kind of things Mexican drug cartels do http://www.blogdelnarco.com/2011/05/localizan-vehiculo-de-los-zetas-el.html
flamingspinach
there is some kind of plugin for picard which uploads your tags as an add release edit
I couldn't get it to work for me though because it uses HTTP GET which has data length limitations :P
nikki
the add cluster as release one
flamingspinach
yup, that one
aeontech
orly?
nice
nikki
the limit was increased a few weeks back
reosarevok
Yeah
But will it work in NGS?
aeontech
i wish there was a plugin to do a straight up discogs release import
flamingspinach
nikki: really? why?
sounds like a good idea - we have freedb stubs, why not discogs stubs?
aeontech
for good quality releases it's such a waste of time having to copy and paste the data over manually
even with a track parser
yeah
exactly
nikki
'cause the limit broken a few things which submit a bunch of data using get :)
I think for ngs we'd just need picard to display a box with a copyable tracklist
aeontech
and discogs has way better metadata than freedb
nikki
anything has better metadata than freedb :P
aeontech
exactly
flamingspinach
yeah, no kidding
aeontech
also would be nice if it auto-linked releases to url's in 'add release' edit notes
if they're recognized
nikki
it'd be better to be able to add the relationships when adding a release
aeontech
half the time it's an amazon or discogs url, why do I have to go and add a relationship manually if i already noted it in the edit note as proof
nikki
I mean... I could link to amazon saying "it doesn't appear to be this version", I wouldn't want it to automatically add an amazon relationship ;)
alex-hu
Do I instruct picard about genres somehow (I'm aware that they're not stored on the server; from faq), or is it assumed that I should continue tagging my music after tagging it with picard?
aeontech
nikki: true
nikki: but at least it could say "hey, you had these url's in the edit note; do you want me to auto-link it now"
and default to no
alex-hu: genre stuff is kinda iffy and very very ill-defined, so picard doesn't do anything with genres for you by default
alex-hu
"by default"; does it mean, I could still use picard to add such tags?
aeontech
alex-hu: but there's a plugin for picard that will use folksonomy tags from last.fm and/or musicbrainz and populate your 'genre' field with the most popular tags
iirc
alex-hu is trying to avoid using a zillion of applications for tagging
alex-hu: yeah, with that plugin you could
basically
alex-hu
hmm; ok. I'll do it manually then ;-)
aeontech
alex-hu: yeah, everybody has their own conventions of how they want to use the genre filed, so it's kinda left wide open
flamingspinach
I just don't use it, I don't see any conceivable use for the genre tag
aeontech
yeah i don't use it either
it's way too limiting
alex-hu
maybe, it's a good idea -- to forgo the tag in the file; thank you, that's how I'll do it
*genre tag*
aeontech
alex-hu: i mean if you actually need them, you can still tag them in itunes or your preferred music player.
alex-hu
I think, if I ever need them, they'll be added in through some metadata.xml file in the directory or such.
aeontech
but for myself, it's both "how do I tag this mix of electro/dubstep/folk", and "damn, this genre is so precise it's useless for finding related stuff"
if i were to use it, I would probably go with "top 3 genre tags from last.fm for this artist"
alex-hu
well, something like ambient + noise or dark ambient + noise is quite useful
aeontech
but even that fails when you have an artist whose albums are in different genres
mchou joined the channel
yeah i guess i'm just used to mentally organizing it by artist name, instead of genre
alex-hu
So, is there some application that I could use to submit my changes adjustments in batch, after I finished tagging the collection?
aeontech
alex-hu: genre changes?
alex-hu
no, minor title changes
nikki
right now the only way to submit edits is through the website
