huh. that 'TT dynamic range meter' is a closed-source program that you have to pay to download?
      • :/
      • probably won't even run on my computer then.
      • hmm. someone's made a freeware foobar2000 plugin version, I might be able to get that running.
      • huh. the sound playback actually works in the latest foobar2000 in wine; it used to be broken :)
      • pity it can't show any japanese characters, makes it tricky to browse my music collection.
      • fun. One song I like gets merely DR6 on the original album. On a later compilation, it's down to DR4.
      • drsaunde1 joined the channel
      • that old dire straits brothers in arms mastering I have has an album DR16 rating... and one of the tracks hits DR20.
      • reosarevok
Now's when I ask what it all means
      • That they're waaaay too loud?
      • kepstin
looks like it's basically just the difference between the peak power and RMS power from the loudest part of the recording.
      • reosarevok
        Yes
      • Sure
      • Which means? :D
      • kepstin
so, the lower the number the more compressed the sound is
      • reosarevok
        Oh
      • So the Dire Straits one is actually good
      • kepstin
        it's ridiculously awesome, in fact.
      • reosarevok
Such a shame that it is Dire Straits then :D
      • kepstin likes that album :)
      • reosarevok imagined
      • I have to say they're just average for me
      • Which is quite good for AOR
      • Normally I dislike that stuff, but Dire Straits I can actually listen to with no problems
      • Is there a way to measure that without foobar?
      • Also, without paying
      • reosarevok is curious now
      • kepstin
reosarevok: not without paying, it looks like
      • for this tool anyways
      • I couldn't find any good open-source ones :/
      • http://people.scs.carleton.ca/~cwalton3/mb/mast... - the top one is DR4, the bottom is DR6.
      • (the middle one is, oddly enough DR7 - it must be right on the edge between 6 and 7)
      • reosarevok
        wow
      • DR4 is so… rectangular
      • kepstin pulls out his red hot chili peppers - californication
      • How low how loooooow, will DR sliiiide
      • derwin
        loudness war victim, that album
      • kepstin
at least, i will pull it out once this tool finishes going through the entire discography of another artist :)
      • pbryan
Yeah, that one is a dog.
      • reosarevok
        Oh, that was "long"
      • A shame
      • reosarevok always thought it was low and it fitted here
      • kepstin
hmm. worst track on Californication gets DR3, most of them are DR4.
      • reosarevok
        DR3?
      • What's DR1, white noise?
      • kepstin
        I dunno :)
      • DR0 would mean that peak power and RMS power are equal, but I don't know enough about RMS power to know what could cause that.
      • Leftmost
        reosarevok, AOR?
      • reosarevok
Leftmost: Dire Straits? Well, how do you call that? :p
      • Leftmost
I'm just asking what "AOR" means.
      • reosarevok
        Oh
      • "that standard rocky thing they put in the radio"
      • ("album-oriented rock", it seems)
      • Leftmost
        Oh.
      • reosarevok
(a name as silly as intelligent dance music)
      • kepstin
hmm. so the thing that would cause a value of DR0 is a recording of a square wave.
      • reosarevok
kepstin: heh, go analyze some Ikeda
      • kepstin
        don't have any :/
      • reosarevok
        Aww
      • kepstin
hmm. some midi synth video game music... hits the same 6-8 values as most modern pop/rock
      • reosarevok
You mean that music that was written to be compressed because there was no other chance?
      • kepstin
lol. even this one album of chiptune music is DR7
      • derwin
kepstin, try some mono lee perry dubs?
      • or king tubbys
      • reosarevok wonders if the vinyl masterings get as compressed as the CD ones
      • reosarevok
        (the modern ones, I mean)
      • kepstin
maybe, but I'd hope not. I didn't think the vinyl format would be physically capable of handling stuff like this :/
      • this is actually almost getting boring; most of the music I have is modern pop/rock, and most of it is getting DR6 - DR8 :)
      • huh, that's kind of amusing. foobar2000 can play the video files from bonus DVDs which I keep with my music, and plays audio-only from them.
      • reosarevok
That can be a good thing
      • Especially if they're stuff like live shows
      • Most of those are boring to watch, nice to hear
      • kepstin found single where the song of the single was DR8, and the music video on the bonus dvd was DR9

      • kepstin
pity musicbrainz picard can't tag mkv files, tho :)
      • reosarevok
kepstin: ask bitmap to make it possible! ;)
      • reosarevok goes to bed for now, might have to wake up "early" tomorrow
      • "early" being "before noon"
      • kepstin
i have to help my sister move tomorrow :/
      • reosarevok
Well, it's not yet 4 AM for you ;)
      • kepstin
        true :)
      • reosarevok
And look at the positive side: moving is cool
      • kepstin
huh. Supertramp - Brother Where You Bound is DR15.
      • not if I'm just there to lift stuff :/
      • reosarevok
Especially because it signals the end of flat hunting
      • That evil, despisable thing
      • *despicable
      • Whatever
      • So she'll be happy
      • reosarevok is usually contagiously happy when moving
      • kepstin
but I'm not moving, I'm just helping someone else move.
      • not quite the same...
      • reosarevok
Yeah, that's where the "contagiously" part is important!
      • kepstin
hmm. this listening to concert dvds without watching them kind of grows on you.
      • reosarevok
Also, you can use the old "hey, I helped you move, now invite me to a nice dinner" trick
      • ;p
      • In addition to the "it's a new house, invite me to a nice dinner to inaugurate it" and the "I'm your loving brother, invite me to a nice dinner"
      • That's 3 days of not cooking!
      • reosarevok is going to bed now and dream of nice dinners and square waves
      • Good timeofday y'all

so what's this about a mbz discogs importer?
      • bitmap
      • derwin
        VxJasonxV it's a firefox plugin
      • VxJasonxV
        boooo
      • kinda
      • warp has some ideas for easy writing of importers.
      • hmm
      • I don't know if I have a discogs account.
      • nope
      • we need a customizable track parser interface in NGS :/
      • derwin
        discogs account is pretty easy
      • but yeah, you need to be logged in for the firefox importer to work
      • VxJasonxV
        yep
      • derwin
I use that importer a lot, fwiw
      • VxJasonxV
        I'm about too
      • I suppose I can use it since Chrome works with them
      • derwin
        there is one bug
      • that is notable
      • it tries to do multiple artist stuff for & and "feat" and etc
      • but it prepends two spaces instead of one
      • and the UI accepts that
      • bitmap
the discogs userscript doesn't work in chrome btw
      • VxJasonxV
        well so much for that
