I have a question about the capabilities of MusicBrainz.

And the question is? :)

Haha, sorry.

I know that MusicBrainz uses audio fingerprinting to tag music from a database. My question is, based on the metadata/tagged information, does MusicBrainz have the ability to rename a file automatically as well?
2011-08-10 22215, 2011
luks
Picard does
2011-08-10 22236, 2011
guessmynickname
And if it can, is there a template I can specify for all songs to follow?
It can? So based on the tag information, I could have all songs follow a "# - Song" format and be correctly identified under the correct artist --> album folder?
2011-08-10 22254, 2011
luks
correct
2011-08-10 22208, 2011
luks
that's actually almost the default setting
2011-08-10 22231, 2011
guessmynickname
LOL! Oh! (Obviously, I haven't even started using the program, haha.)
2011-08-10 22204, 2011
luks
you should :)
2011-08-10 22232, 2011
luks
the default version doesn't include the dash, but you get Artist/Album/01 Song
2011-08-10 22241, 2011
guessmynickname
Lastly, if some songs I have are tagged incorrectly, or not in the format that I want, will Picard delete the metadata and standardize all of my songs?
2011-08-10 22255, 2011
kepstin-laptop
guessmynickname: yes.
2011-08-10 22256, 2011
guessmynickname
@Luks: That's fine, haha.
2011-08-10 22241, 2011
reosarevok
guessmynickname: you *can* easily add the dash though :)
2011-08-10 22237, 2011
guessmynickname
Oh really? I'd prefer to actually add the dash, haha. I didn't know this program was THAT customizable. ;o I'm a decent computer user; would you say that'd be easy to figure out how to do that once I start using Picard?
2011-08-10 22227, 2011
reosarevok
I imagine it's documented somewhere…
2011-08-10 22231, 2011
kepstin-laptop
guessmynickname: it shouldn't be too hard. There's a lot of settings that you can tweak in the preferences, and the website has links to some guides.
2011-08-10 22246, 2011
bitmap
you can just ask here if you can't figure it out :)

guessmynickname
Awesomesauce!
2011-08-10 22221, 2011
reosarevok
But yeah, the program is relatively simple to use. The naming scheme can get complicated and use lots of variables and stuff, but I've had no problems using it without understanding any of them :)
2011-08-10 22222, 2011
guessmynickname
Okay, thanks sooooooooooo much guys. I'm heard good things about this program (and yeah, I probably should have figure out some stuff for my own - haha), and can't wait to use it!
2011-08-10 22203, 2011
guessmynickname
If I run into any trouble, I'll be back here and ask for help. And m y goodness, you guys are very quick to help -- and knowledgable! (:
2011-08-10 22222, 2011
kepstin-laptop
one thing to remember - Musicbrainz is a user-edited database, and the tags you get from picard is only as good as the data people put in. If you see any problems, or missing releases, please fix them on the website.
2011-08-10 22223, 2011
guessmynickname
^ Yeah, I realize that about the program. And I'll be sure to help the database just in case any songs aren't there.
2011-08-10 22245, 2011
guessmynickname
Bye guys! And again, thanks for the help. :D

I've just discovered that a Work doesn't have an "Official Website" URL Type
2011-08-10 22206, 2011
kepstin-laptop
to add a new URL relationship requires making an RFC proposal on the musicbrainz-style mailing list
2011-08-10 22232, 2011
rphill
I did wonder if it had to go to the Style mailing list...
2011-08-10 22233, 2011
kepstin-laptop
which needs at least 2 weeks of review and unanimous approval from the style council
2011-08-10 22243, 2011
reosarevok
Hmmm
2011-08-10 22250, 2011
reosarevok
Official website for works?
2011-08-10 22255, 2011
reosarevok
Any examples?
2011-08-10 22205, 2011
reosarevok has never seen those in his corner of the music world :)
2011-08-10 22205, 2011
kepstin-laptop
hmm. I was actually working on an "official website" url for release groups.
2011-08-10 22212, 2011
rphill
Consider an "Aggregate Work", my favorite of the moment, Evita
2011-08-10 22214, 2011
kepstin-laptop
but I'm really not sure what use it would be for works...
hmm. well, you're probably not going to get such an AR proposal passed on the strength of links to only one site :/ You should try to find a few different examples linking to different sites, ideally for different types of works if you can.
2011-08-10 22247, 2011
rphill
I'm guessing most of the examples are likely to be Musicals, or Films, although I guess there might be some "Official" Websites for Symphonies and the like...
2011-08-10 22223, 2011
ianmcorvidae
what we really need is rdfs:seeAlso :P
2011-08-10 22232, 2011
rphill
Another alternative would be just a simple "related to"
2011-08-10 22230, 2011
ianmcorvidae
^ and that's the normal-person way of saying what I did :P
2011-08-10 22237, 2011

ianmcorvidae: Sorry I only discovered the IRC this week so rdfs doesn't mean much to me..

rphill: don't worry about it, I'm just making a semantic-web joke :)

no problem

don't worry, I got it too.

In terms of putting it (in some form) to the style mailing list, can anyone do it, and does it need to be in any particular format?
2011-08-10 22254, 2011
kepstin-laptop
Anyone can do it, but there's a little bit of format work to be done. Since all ARs are documented on the musicbrainz wiki, you should make up a wiki page (under your user page) containing the AR documentation. There's some annoying template things to deal with, I hate working with them :(
hmm. actually, I think I can put out an RFV for that now.
2011-08-10 22248, 2011
reosarevok
I thought you had done that already :/
2011-08-10 22238, 2011
rphill
It does seem quite similiar.. Shame that your Entity needs to have "publicly endorsed" the site, as other wise, Work has an official homepage would have fitted quite well...
kepstin-laptop: ok, I meant as in "keeping account of what number is what"
2011-08-10 22224, 2011
kepstin-laptop
heh
2011-08-10 22226, 2011

(which is the only use of giving them numbers)

Any of the experimentally/electronically-minded people here can speak well of any of these? Awesome Tapes from Africa (US), Fauna (AR), Gangpol & Mit (FR), Hype Williams (UK/EE), Natalia Beridze (GE), Elektro Guzzi (AT), Dunian (LV), Oyaarss (LV), Mujuice (RU), Brokenchord (LT), Raime (UK).

wonder if ocharles ever did more work on that style proposal tracker he said he was doing
2011-08-10 22238, 2011
ianmcorvidae
or perhaps I should write something like that and make it part of BrainzStem so we don't have to go through this with any *brainz site we make :P
2011-08-10 22230, 2011
kepstin-laptop
so, what colours were picked for the bookbrainz design? :)
2011-08-10 22243, 2011

thus far, none
2011-08-10 22202, 2011

at the moment it's unstyled HTML :P

2011-08-10 22234, 2011

hmm. the metabrainz favicon has a music note in it.
2011-08-10 22235, 2011

ianmcorvidae
hah
2011-08-10 22221, 2011
kepstin-laptop
hmm. well, given the colours taken by the metabrainz and musicbrainz logos, you're left with having to use red and yellow.
