CatCat: I updated the plain tracklist, maybe you can tell me if it’s better now ? :)

the only known problem is that the ESC key doesn’t work in Chrome (I tested FF too where everything works as in Opera)

Is there a consensus on barcodes that are not printed on the actual release, but are known to be assigned to the product? Should they be added?
2012-01-24 02449, 2012

I haven't seen discussion on that matter I think

kovacsur: I have no problem with that.

http://musicbrainz.org/doc/Barcode actually suggests guessing barcodes (which I find rather questionable by the way), so in the spirit of that page it should probably be added
2012-01-24 02441, 2012
kovacsur
on the other hand, it may actually make it more difficult for someone to ID the release in their hands
2012-01-24 02403, 2012
warp
kovacsur: I expect there are a fair amount of releases where the barcode is on some outer packaging (sleeve, shrink-wrap) which is thrown away by many consumers.
2012-01-24 02424, 2012
kovacsur
Fine, I'll add it then

I don't think the barcode was printed anywhere in this case apart from catalogs and databases of the label (Polygram/Universal)

kovacsur: is the release on amazon? Try entering the barcode in the amazon search box, and see if that finds the release :)
2012-01-24 02416, 2012

kepstin-laptop, nope, the album is only available in mp3 on Amazon

Thanks for the suggestion, though. :)

I eventually decided to add the barcode along with an annotation mentioning that it isn't printed on the release

sorry :( just making sure someone is there. so I set up the server and everything is working find. However when I run a query like: ws/2/release-group/?artist=d5d97b2b-b83b-4976-814a-056d9076c8c3&inc=artist-credits&type=album I get an error

kovacsur warp often removable stuff like obi (in jpn) or stickers hold the barcode which is then invisibale later

jesus2099
sometimes some release without barcode have one in databases but never on the physical release. it happened to me sometimes to guess the barcode from many consisten internet sources although I had the complete release without anything on it
2012-01-24 02418, 2012
hawke_
Hmm, I wouldn’t add a barcode if it doesn’t have a barcode.
2012-01-24 02436, 2012

2012-01-24 02459, 2012

hawke_, I had two options, either store the unprinted barcode in the annotation field and make it difficult to search/list, or store it in the barcode field and mention it isn't printed in the annotation
2012-01-24 02413, 2012
kovacsur
I think the latter is more useful for practical purposes
2012-01-24 02413, 2012

It’s not a barcode if it’s unprinted. :-p

btw here is a google that will find most releases’ (not too old releases) matching japanese barcodes from the catalogue number , for instance you look for KICS-994’s JAN (Japanese Article Number=bvarcode) because you lost the obi or you didn’t get it at your second hand shops :
hawke_: that would disallow other types of barcode.

warp: If we’re entering things that aren’t a barcode into the barcode field, then either that’s wrong, or it’s right and the field needs to be renamed.

barcodes are really just an alternate way of visually dipicting numbers and/or text...
2012-01-24 02451, 2012
hawke_
We already validate that the barcode is a UPC/EAN, and require confirmation if it’s not — and advise people not to enter supplemental barcodes either
2012-01-24 02456, 2012
kepstin-laptop
it's possible to add code to make musicbrainz display the visual barcode based on the number you enter, if you really want
2012-01-24 02458, 2012
hawke_
kepstin-laptop: Indeed.
2012-01-24 02413, 2012
hawke_
kepstin-laptop: But only if you know the encoding of the original barcode. :-p
Sure it’s often displayed as a barcode for machine readability…but that doesn’t mean it’s a barcode
2012-01-24 02450, 2012
kepstin-laptop
just like '1234' isn't a number, it's a visual representation of a number.
2012-01-24 02451, 2012
warp
hawke_: I'd say the number is GTIN.
2012-01-24 02423, 2012
kepstin-laptop
hmm. for EAN, GTIN might be more accurate, yeah
2012-01-24 02427, 2012

I think I’ll try to EMBED (with madonna) this page as a USERJS to display bar codes in MB :D

EAN, UPC and JAN are all barcode encodings of a GTIN.
2012-01-24 02447, 2012

2012-01-24 02451, 2012

2012-01-24 02404, 2012

Though I’ll agree that it’s confused by the fact that there are *also* barcode formats called UPC and EAN
2012-01-24 02415, 2012
hawke_
But the thing itself is the number
2012-01-24 02408, 2012

2012-01-24 02417, 2012
kepstin-laptop
hawke_: according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GTIN a GTIN is a standard identification number that may be encoded into a variety of barcode formats
2012-01-24 02424, 2012
kepstin-laptop
it appears to be a generalization of EAN
2012-01-24 02435, 2012
hawke_
kepstin-laptop: Yep.
2012-01-24 02426, 2012
kepstin-laptop
apparently 'EAN' is short for 'International Artical Number' ;)
2012-01-24 02412, 2012
hawke_
