I've added a few original releases where all I have to go in is a few low-res pictures of the case.

the majority of stuff I enter is not stuff I have :P

Discogs.com has a lot of the track durations

To have correct original release dates for release groups, for one.

I also don't enter durations when entering CDs I have in hand, since I'm going to stick a disc ID on later.

It is not trivial to find out the durations for vinyl releases

Especially vinyl releases you don't own and can't even find a good tracklist for.

and I add stuff because I like adding stuff. not everyone edits solely for the purpose of tagging their files :P

What if there were special cases with some of the music/titles that aren't widely known and you enter it in wrong because of that?

how do we ever know anything's correct? :P we can only go by what information we have available and if someone comes along later and suspects there's something wrong, they can see from the edit history where it came from

Then we'll all be happy that people can edit the data :)

If I can't find full evidence for a release (pictures and all), I mark it low quality.

I just assumed people added stuff that they had, since they know it was correct

And I can add/edit things where I know a fair bit of information, but far from all, and believe it's important that the release be in MB, then mark it low quality so others know it's not reliable.

I also add releases for albums I own but have a different release of, so clearly hearing isn't everything.

i had a funny looking cd picture disc that my computer just would load (actually took me forever and a day to pry it out too)

It just really annoys my OCD.. if you have incomplete information.. why enter it in hoping someone else has the rest of the information. Or why not research it to get the rest of the information>?

kyomi: you need to realise that not everyone has your ocd. not everyone cares about having every field filled in (e.g. if you only care about tagging your files, track times are pretty irrelevant)

I found a few copies of it for sale on ebay, but the sellers couldn't/wouldn't give me tracklist info or the like.

The release that started this was an album from 2004

some people add everything, some people add only the bits they care about (and durations are kinda useless for normal tagging since you have the files themselves anyway)

You're welcome to add as much detail as you want (thanks!). That doesn't mean everyone needs to be as detailed as you are, or we wouldn't have half of the data we have anyway :)
