Yes, very serious, because contributors will stop to even attempt to upload cover art, it fails far too often if you ask me.

zas : we are generally aware of the problem and want to fix it. fixing it appears to be non-trivial.
nikki
should be coming back now
zas
derwin: what is this non-trivial problem ?
nikki
zas: the fact we have no control over it
derwin
it's mostly summarized as "archive.org has limited engineering resources"
zas
i'm aware of S3 stats... they show how bad is the service since .... months.
i understand why and how the issue is "out of control" ... but using CAA/MB feature is a real pain, whatever you do, upload or even download (like today, MB was unable to display many cover arts). It would be a good thing to find a way to take control on this "issue".
i was hoping it would be a temporary issue, but it seems not after months of use.
perhaps it is time to find an alternative to archive.org...
reosarevok
With unlimited bandwidth, unlimited image size and no legal requirements? heh
And download almost never fails - not more than MB proper, at least
It's upload which is the issue
But if you can find an alternative that offers those three things, please let us know
(for free, too, of course)
zas
reosarevok: i was waiting for such answer. Being free is a great advantage, but only when the thing is working. And it doesn't.
reosarevok
It's working better than the alternative of no cover art
Would I prefer something that was always on and had no issues? Sure. Do we have such an option? No. Is this better than nothing? Certainly
So...

reosarevok: now is not the time to make sense :P

IIRC there's a meeting with the Archive planned for soonish (next week?) and hopefully we'll get at least something that tells us "don't try" before we let the user waste time with an upload that'll fail
Which would be a nice thing
But yeah, if not, it'll have to do
Unless someone's willing to volunteer, go to the Archive and fix it (unsure how that'd go) or give them a big donation that says "for a developer to hack on the CAA", we're certainly not the ones who can dictate terms here

As soon as warp finally finishes it, we'll have our new uploader which will at least let people upload several images at once, which means it will be less annoying when it works
eihrul has left the channel
But that's about all we can do from our side
zas
multiples images at once .... great... but it will be even worse when it fails, if it works like now.
We need at least a way to disable uploads when it is known they'll fail (if ...)
SultS
let’s wait and see how it works before we judge, why don’t we?

I'm uploding some pics to CAA right now, so it seems to be working again ;)

if I had the free time, I am local enough to volunteer, and have relevant skills. I just don't have the free time.

Musicbrainz could really profit from responses taking less than 1 second. Not that it possible with interpreted languages :(

btw about CAA being down. it is cool that it is only upload that is frequently down and only very rarely the FUNKEY PICS are hidden!
JESUS2099 don’t know if online guys here like it to put a label onto an MB release when its logo is shown on it but http://musicbrainz.org/edit/22275510 is adding such an imprint and still needs one vote to pass
Of all the time it takes to upload 20 files with the current system, I guess :p
I'd be too!

yep.
I should figure out how to do that one as a single medium
’cos 5×DualDisc really bothers me now.

Mineo: Thanks for the info on “Bach in Leipzig”
Any opinion on whether the per-disc catalog numbers should be kept, or just the one from the set? I have an irrational hatred of per-disc catnos, but at least I know its irrational. :-D
